First, me and a friend went to the Nevada Palace on Boulder Highway for their 10:00 AM poker tourney. This doesn't even rate a mention from all vegas poker and I'll explain why I think they have omitted it. It's only $20 to enter and they play up to three tables. The first three 20 minute rounds are LIMIT holdem. Then it becomes no limit. Starting chip stack: $400 T. Starting blinds: 5/10, 10/20, 25/50. So by round three you are pretty much pot committed unless you get very lucky in the first couple of rounds. Which is what happened to me. I had about $250 in chips and had to bet out with a king, I got called by somebody with an Ace (no pair, weak kicker) and I was done. The only redeeming qualities of the tourney structure is that it's quick and the buy in is cheap.
The Fiesta Henderson poker room is rather pleasant. I'll save the details for a room review, but cocktail service is quick, players and dealers are friendly. On Friday night they had a NL table running (with a max $40 buy in, but you could rebuy when you went under $40 for a max of $79). But the rest of the time they just had 2-4 and 3-6 limit. Cocktail service is faster than down on the casino floor.
I'd say that the key to playing here is patience and discipline. Raising from early position still resulted in 5-6 callers. Everyone is on a draw. I ended up losing money because my draws didn't hit as often as theirs did. Get away from hands early or they'll cost you. One bit of excitement was that there was buzz that maybe the bad beat jackpot hit. Fiesta is linked with all the other stations casinos and they have a community pool. The jackpot is over 200,000 and is split by all players in all casinos when a qualifying bad beat is hit. At about 10:00 PM on Monday night I was playing and there was a notice on the poker room screen that they may have "an exciting announcement, please stand by..." but it turned out to be a computer glitch. Still, the excitement of possibly winning an extra bonus of over $200 was cool. Then, a short time later I busted out of the table when my pocket Queens got beat by K/9 off suit when the player turned a third nine....
