Trip Report
3/19 to 3/22 1st Vegas poker action.
Date: 03/24/07
Player: ctcrandy
For Rooms: Luxor,MGM Grand,
Summary: As a Vegas Poker Virgin, I learned one valuable lesson, if you want to play alot of poker leave the wife at home!
Content: My trip report will be broken into 2 parts 1. Poker 2. The rest of Vegas.
Part 1.
3/19
Luxor 2pm to 4pm I thought I would try the Luxor out first. My wife and I were staying there and I wanted my first live B&M experience to be of limited risk. 1 table of 1/2 NL was full and they were trying to open another table. I sat at the new table with 3 others. Over the course of the next 2 hours the table had between 4 and 8 players. I rebought $50 twice and ended up down about $125 for the session. The play was extremely erratic and the drink service was almost non-existent ( 1 drink in 2 hours) One dealer Richie was very pleasant and kept the action moving even with many inexperienced players. The other 2 dealers had 0 personality and 0 patience.
The Luxor room and soft 1/2 game could be profitable but I would have needed more time.
3/20
Played the MGM 11am $65 tourny. The tourny was well run and after my Luxor experince I was so pleased with the look, feel and comfort of the MGM room. The field of 80 (60+20 alternates)had a variety of players. I had played very TAG to this point and had won some of good pots with a straight(1 KO), a flush and trip J's(2 KO's). By the last hand at the 100/200 level the tourny starts turning into a all-in fest. In late postition with UTG(2k in chips) and UTG+1(2.5k in chips) all-in I had KsKc and I reraise all-in(8k in chips) and the button and blinds fold. UTG shows 88 UTG+1 shows Jh10h. Flop comes Khxx, turn 4h and the river 2h. My trips fall to the flush. I would have entered the break near the top in chips! After the break with 200/400 blinds I waited for 1 good hand and went all in with Ah-10s. Got 2 callers including table chip leader who flopped a set of 9's to knock me out in about 30 place.
After getting knocked out I put in to play 3/6 limit. Even though there were 6-8 people on the list they didn't start a table so after 1/2 hour I took a seat in a 4-8 table. I played for 3 more hours and ended up down about $60.
3/21
Got to the MGM around 2pm and got to sit a 3/6 table right away. I bought in for $200. A good mix of players. Quite a few bought in for $100 and left after busting out fast. One hand of note- I turned quad Q's and took down a very nice pot against trip A's and a flush. :) Cashed out at 6pm up about $100.
The MGM room was very well run, the cocktail service was excellent and the dealers were very nice and efficient.
3/22
NO POKER left Vegas at 1PM :(
Part 2.
The rest of our Vegas stay.
The Luxor hotel was OK. The pool was very nice and our room(in the pyramid) was ok. The hallways around the room were another story. From the main floor you would think the view from up top would be cool but instead you see a lot of garbage and dust on top of everything you cannot see from below. In the future we will be staying someplace closer to the center of the strip.
3/19
While I was playing poker my wife was laying out by the pool. The weather was great and I joined her for a swim before dinner. We caught the 8pm Comedy show at the Tropicana. This was a great value. $20 per person included 1 free drink. All three comedienes were great and the wife and I had a blast! (note the 8pm show is smokefree)
3/20
My wife went to the pool while I went to the MGM to play poker. Later we met up and walked from the MGM to the Venetian.(it was nice to see everything but I would not walk it again) We ate at Delmonicos. The food was all good, but for the price i have eaten in much better places. After dinner we headed over to the Mirage to see Danny Gans. The show was alot of fun.
3/21
We took the duece to the outlet mall and spent a couple of hours shopping. Nice mall, good prices, wife happy. :) Luckily the weather turned warmer in the afternoon and my wife headed back to the pool while I headed for the poker room at the MGM. At night we saw Barry Manillow at the Hilton. This was my gift to my wife. The show was actually very entertaining.
3/22
We packed up, at breakfast and played Video poker for 3 hours. I lost $20. My wife, who doesn't really gamble, won $60. We left for airport at 1pm:(
In summary, I learned that if you want to spend alot of time playing Poker leave the wife at home or come in a group so she can have others to play with! 3 full days in Vegas and only 10 hours playing poker.
