Double Virgin hits the Venetian
Date: 02/08/07
Player: CaliforniaJoe
For Rooms: Caesars Palace,Venetian,Wynn,

Summary: This was my first time playing live poker ever and first time I'd even seen the Venetian poker room. I had a thoroughly great time! I recommend this room for new players who are worried about sitting down at a real table game.

Content: In August last year I went to Vegas for my birthday and finally took my first step into live poker waters.

I went with my wife and we loved the look of the Venetian poker room and how much more space it seemed to have than others that we had seen such as Caesars or Wynn. We arrived in the afternoon but there were several tables open and we were able to have a good chat to the friendly front desk person who explained things to us and how the room worked etc.

One of the things that really hooked our interest on this trip to play poker was the notices about free poker lessons all day. We've been tempted before to go for lessons but the timing just never worked. Having them all day is just fantastic.

The way it works is that they have a table set aside all the time that has a dealer who is just dealing and playing with 'fake' chips. Anyone can sit down and often it seems that the other dealers who aren't on tables seem to hang there and chat and play too.

Over all it was a very friendly and helpful atmosphere for new kids on the block and they asnwered all our questions clearly. The other couple who were at the table were equally new to poker and we all had a great time. They even give you free bottles of water while you sit there learning. All very pleasant.

The true test for all of this is what we did next. Yes, we got up after 20-30 minutes and sat down at a real poker table and played $3/$6 limit for over an hour. We spent most of the time just watching the game and hardly played any real hands but I think that worked in our favour because we both ended up walking away with over $25 in profit between us. It was great fun.

I am sure that the 'sharks' at the table were happy to see us coming over from the teaching table. However, they were all very kind and although we both made the usual virgin mistakes like chatting about our hands etc we were told what was right and what was wrong without any problems or being made to feel that we were messing up anyone's game.

I'm sure we were just lucky about the other players at the table and we could easily have had some real bears there who would have been unhappy about our slow play. I do think that the open atmosphere and the friendly table dealers helped to avoid that to some extent.

We'll both be back there when we visit again.
In my opinion, that is the best recommendation that any poker room can get from a virgin.

Watch out people, we've both read a poker book since August so now we are deadly, lol.

Joe
