Anniversary trip
Date: 01/20/07
Player: dooms78
For Rooms: MGM Grand,Mirage,Venetian,Wynn,

Summary: Where else to spend you're 7th wedding anniversary but in a series of card rooms with complete strangers!

Content: Bad trip in terms of results, but a huge success in learning about all the new card rooms I'd never seen.

First stop: the best Vegas has to offer, the Wynn. I'm sorry, but a very tough room. Sure it's gorgeous but the players are fast, loose and smart. Playing 5-10 no limit, I quickly found out that any weakness draws the sharks. I only played about 1 1/2 hours and I'm not sure I picked up a pot worth more than $30. Any time I had a marginal hand, they pushed me off it and, on occasion, showed me their bluff. When I had the nuts, or close to it, they knew and mucked. I reccomend the room just for the atmosphere, but it is not for the faint of heart.

Next stop: MGM Grand, the hotel where my wife and I were staying. Two words: ultra cool. I've never seen a room like it, the dark colored walls, the plazma TV's and it was quiet. You feel like you can think in peace. I was all too happy to play for 3 - 4 hours on the first night to a little profit. The players I played with were pretty tight, I played 2-5 no limit, so much smaller stakes that earlier. The service was a tad on the slow side, but it was a pretty busy night, so that's understandable.

Monday night, time for a tourney. After deciding on Mirage, I made my way over (and spotted Ron Jeremy on the way). The Monday night $230 no-limit torueny only drew enough for four tables, about 35 players. The donkeys went away right away. But several very good players were also there, ones I respected not only for their etiquette but their solid play. I got knocked out when my opponent caught a J on the turn to beat my K's (I was pretty depressed). So, as toruney's go, very competitive and very enjoyable (a good test for this southern california player) but the Mirage card room was very very very loud! I could not think without my I-pod in my ears. It's right in the middle of the casino and with live bands, table games and obnoxious slot players all aroud, it is hard to soften the noise.

Finally, the Venetian. If the Wynn is option 1, this is 1A. Gorgeous scenery, beautiful waitresses and posh tables. The action was fast and loose, I had my all-in raise called by a guy with K-J. But it wasn't just him, the entire table was loose. It'd make for a profitable venture if I had the time, but it was already 9pm and time to enjoy my anniversary night with my wife and a few bottles of the bubbly. Service was fast and the servers were absolutely first round draft picks. I wish I would say more, but I was only there for 45 minutes to "check things out."

A down trip financially, but a fantastic one for seeing the new card rooms on the strip.
