Turning 21 In Vegas
Date: 01/02/07
Player: blackjaw
For Rooms: Luxor,O'Shea's,
Summary: I was scared to play live poker in vegas, thinking it would be a lot harder than the micro-limts I play online. Wow, was I wrong.
Content: Because This is a poker fourm, I'll skip all the parts of my trip relating to drunk'n blackjack and such and skip to the 2 poker games I played.
The first was a the Luxor, in their $50 min/max buy-in NL hold-em game. We got there around 7pm and didn't have to wait for a seat. I bought in for 50, paid my blinds, folded to a raise and then was asked if I wanted to re-buy. Anytime you are under $50 in this game you could get another 50. The 1-1-2 blinds seemed silly to me, but it didn't really matter, because after about 15 hands I had $200 in chips. This game was beyond loose. 1 kid sat down for about 15 minutes, his friends asked him to go to mgm, so he went all in, I called with AQ, and when i flipped my cards, he mucked and walked away, without ever seeing the flop. Just don't bluff at that table, because you will get called with anything. The drink service was not too great, the server looked 70, but if you asked the dealer for a cocktail you got it soon enough.
A few days later we went to O'shea's. The bar was pouring free shots so the place was crazy, their was about a 15 minute wait for the 1-5 spread limit game. Bought in for about 60, and started playing. First thing i noticed was an older fellow across the table from me that I knew was a local. Turns out their pretty easy to spot. This game was also loose as could be except for the local who played tighter than a rock. We played for about 18 hours, the game almost died off around 4-7am, but then it got going strong again. Drink service here was nothing great, but it did come quicker than anywhere else once you asked for it. O'sheas spreads a 100-300 buyin NL game that I had my name on the list for, but I was the only one that ever signed up. They had 3 tables. the most we ever saw used was 2. They said they'd spread any game that was asked for, so if you can round up a friend or two, you'll have a place to play. The room was in a nice little cave that kept most of the noise out. The dealers were friendly, and they all seemed pretty decent to me. When I go back to vegas, I think this will be the first place I play because it was fairly laid back and a good place to get into the swing of a live game. I would HIGHLY reccomend the 1-5 spread game for new player as the dealers didn't mind explaining the little things about live poker (string bets and so on...) If you do go, and see an old man who has been playing for 20+ hours named tony, tell him we said hello!
