Happy Holidays to Me

Summary: Profitable 5 night trip focused mainly on Wynn and Mandalay. Two nice hotels... COMPLETELY different players.

Las Vegas Trip Report

I started out at the Wynn on Wednesday night and played part $4/$8 limit, part $1/$3 NL. The limit game was pretty good and had a ton of ladies wearing WSOP gear who called every hand until the river then tossed the cards. These women were playing 8/3 offsuit in 2nd position. The other players all seemed to be dealers at the Wynn. I had a table with 3 dealers playing at the same time. One table had two really drunk guys that eventually got kicked out for swearing after multiple warnings. Management was very swift and tough and removed the man quickly.

The $1/$3 NL was a very tough game. These players were ridiculously tight and strong players. Many seemed to be locals and the only time there was some real action was when big pairs would face off after a low, unpaired flop. By the way, $1/$3 uses $3 chips. Nobody could count these and it led to a ton of weird number bets.

Overal at Wynn I won about 75% of sessions and usually won $100 or so per session.

I did walk over to TI for a $60 tournament over there. The competition was very light, but they couldn't even fill two tables for the tournament so they only paid out 4 players. I was able to push people around in there since they all seemed like beginners and took down $90 for fourth place.

After three days at Wynn we moved over to THE hotel at Mandalay. The Mandalay was filled with fish. Lots of angry fish and very few locals were at Mandalay. The smoke-filled room had tons of $1/$2 NL pots that were well over $300. The players tried to be real flashy as many told me they were down several thousand in the casino, but doing ok in poker. People could not let go of a pair of aces (not pockets) when pairs, flushes, and/or straights were on the board.

Because the Mandalay room only has twelve tables sometimes there would be waits of up to 15 players on a 1/2 NL game. I made the mistake of walking over to Luxor. They have a great manager, but the dealers there are horrible. Also, it seemed like everyone at the table was in the middle of dinner so hands took forever. Luxor is great for beginners, but if you are trying to play poker for real go elsewhere. After an hour of frustration I went back to Mandalay where they had at least 6-7 open seats immediately and no list.

After 3 played hands in a half hour where my 3 sixes Ace kicker beat 3 sixes K kicker, and my boat beat two pair, I walked back to my room up another $450. The total for the trip, $1250. Not bad!
