Bad Beat Vegas Poker Journal
Date: 11/21/06
Player: GuinnessDad
For Rooms: Luxor,Paris,

Summary: This is an email I sent to my Thursday night poker crew.

Content: I AM ONLY TYPING THIS SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT AT THE NEXT THURSDAY NIGHT POKER GAME. - This is therapeutic.

When I told my wife, "I played the best cards of my life, and I lost," she just didn't understand. So, I will write this now and then close the chapter of the disgusting tale forever.

Vegas Tip #1... Get up at 5:00 (8:00 Michigan time) to play the drunk 20-somethings.

Bad Beat #1... 1-2 No Limit at the Luxor. The big stack (~$600) two to my right raises to $15 (standard raise). I look down and see the bullets (AA). I make it $45. The JagerBomb drunk kid two to my left goes all-in for just over $300. The first raiser calls. Obviously, I call for the remainder of my $200. Two players all-in preflop. Out comes the flop, river, turn... Big stack turns over AK for A high. I turn over AA for a pair of aces. JagerBomb turns over 9-10 offsuit for two pair.

Vegas Tip #2... When at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

Bad Beat #2... Back to the 1-2 No Limit at the Paris where I lost with a set of aces last year when runner-runner diamond gave someone a miracle flush to crack my set of aces. Okay... three to my left raises to $15. I look down to AK. I simply call. Flop comes K-T-7 (rainbow suited). I check being the evil bastard I am. The preflop raiser bets $35. I raise to $125 (a beautiful overbet to look like a bluff). He shakes his head and says, "You probably have me beat, but I have to see it." He calls and turns over 8-8. Now, reread the first sentence of this paragraph and guess what happens. Yes, that's right. Runner, runner diamonds and he is holding the 8 of diamonds.

Vegas Tip #3... When all else fails, at least drink for free.

Bad Beat #3 aka Getting Tapped... Back to the 1-2 No Limit Luxor on the eve of departure. Folds around to the button who just limps in. The small blind completes the call. I look at 4-4 and just check hoping to hit a set and do some damage. Sure enough... the flop is 10-4-2 (rainbow). Small blind checks. I check (being the evil bastard I am), and the button bets $4 into a $6 pot. The small blind folds. I say, "For four bucks, I'll see another card." The turn is another 10 giving me the full house. BINGO! I check. The button bets $5 into a $14 pot. I raise to $15. He pushes the remainder of his $60 in and I shout, "CALL!" He turns over K-K! The S.O.B. was slow playing them! Now, calculate his odds of hitting one of the remainder kings to give him the bigger full house. Ah ha! You forgot other outs he has... the two remaining 10s. Guess what the river is... a 10. He has 10-10-10-K-K and I have 10-10-10-4-4. The four outer was hit.

All in all... I rode the roller coaster up and down at the Aladdin, the Bellagio, and the MGM Grand the rest of time, but I left Vegas down. Thank you for taking the time to read these pitiful stories. I promise you... you will never hear them again.

See you next Thursday.
