Poker, Sports, and the easiest call of my life
Date: 11/07/06
Player: mtgregory
For Rooms: Treasure Island (TI),Venetian,

Summary: Played a tournament and NL at TI. Some wild players at the Venetian that like to give away their money.

Content: Out to Vegas for the TCU / UNLV football game and of course some poker. It was the big TCU Alumni trip of the year, so a big group of friends from all over the country were flying in. I flew in from Colorado early Friday morning. I love flying Frontier, TV on the back of every seat and the flight only cost me $130. When we were waiting for our bags at the airport we saw TJ Cloutier and got a picture taken with him, very good poker karma to start the trip.
Checked into TI and headed straight over to the poker room for the 11am tournament. It was a very well run tournament. $60 buy in gets you 2000 in chips and you can buy an extra 1000 after the break for a $5 dealer tip. I was pretty much card dead, got knocked out right before the break, and decided not to buy back in.
Got up early on Saturday morning and headed over to the Venetian to play a little 1-2 NL. The air fresheners are definitely brutal, but you get used to it after a while. It is a gorgeous room with great tables and service. I love playing early morning games on Saturdays because you are almost always guaranteed to get some all night drunks at your table that are just paying everyone off. This morning was no exception. There was a guy drinking straight Jack all night at the table. He was stacked with about $800 in chips and he was telling everyone how he was the best poker player at the table. He was being loud, obnoxious, and very reckless with his stack. This was very enticing, but also very dangerous. He doubled several people up, but he probably knocked out twice as many. At one point he passed out at the table for 40 minutes, he got cut off, and he would have been kicked out but everyone at the table wanted him to stay because of his chip stack. I doubled up when I had pocked 3’s and hit my set on the flop. Ended the session +$200.

That night I played the 1-3 game at TI. Pretty good game, but a lot of young locals at the table. It was stiff competition, and all of these players seemed to know each other and the dealers. I pissed one local off when I caught a Q high flush on the flop and he bet all in into me. Called and he had caught the flush to the J. I was excited that they broadcast the Baldomir vs. Mayweather title fight in the poker room. The one complaint I had about this room was that it seemed very cramped. They put the tables very close to each other and you have people bumping into you and asking you to move all of the time. Definitely a little cramped. Ended the session +$100.
Sunday afternoon went over to the Venation for another run at the 1-2NL game. The tables there seemed to attract 1 or 2 local rocks, a hand full of decent players, and 2 or 3 morons that were paying everyone off. I lucked out and caught a hand against one of the morons. There was this guy that was calling everything and would not get off a hand. I am sitting in the small blind and catch AQ off. Bet is to me and I raise to 15 and get 2 callers. Flop comes A72 rainbow. I bet 15, the call happy idiot stays in and the other player folds. Turn comes Q. I bet 15 and he calls. River comes 9, no harm. I bet 30, and he raises me 30. I am a little nervous he might have a set, but am almost positive he doesn’t have it. I go over the top of him and re-raise 60. He thinks about it and re-raises all in. Uh-oh. I reach down and grab part of my chip stack and he says “what do you have AQ?” and proceeds to flip over his A7 before I even have a chance to call. Shocked, I go ahead and make the easiest call of my life for about a $400 pot. Half the table proceeded to tell him that he shouldn’t have shown his cards before I called. He said he knew I was going to call anyway because I only needed about another $40 to make the call. He was probably right, but none the less one of the dumbest moves I have ever seen
