Trip Report
I'm down, but not out.

For Rooms: Caesars Palace,Mandalay Bay,MGM Grand,Venetian,
Summary: First losing trip to Vegas since my very first. A little card dead, a little bad luck, a little tilt, but good info. Mandalay, MGM, Caesars, Venetian.
Content: I took advantage of the combination of low room rates and the Mandalay Bay Poker rate to take 4 nights at MB for an Avg. of $89/night. The hotel is showing a bit of wear and tear, and the beds were uncomfortable, but I suppose it was a good deal.
As a result, I had to clock 20 hours in the MB poker room, which I thought was going to be a dream, based on previous visits. However, they have changed the NL structure. Previously it was 2-4NL $200 min/max buy, which created a nice, actiony, mixed game. Now, it's more standards 1-2 and 2-4 with the "standard" buy ins. This has led to a lot of locals feeding at the 2-4 level, and the 1-2 isn't necessarily as profitable, with the ability to buy in for $100.
The hotel rate was low, so the occupancy was as well.. In the AM on weekdays, there often were NO GAMES AT ALL running.
Also, they DO NOT ALLOW IPODS at MB anymore, so my 20 hours of required play seemed like an eternity.
I ran a bit card dead-- I saw AA only once in 25 hours of play at MB while I was there... I got kings cracked every time I played them, even when I hit the flop hard when no A flopped. I ran into rivered everything imaginable, and when I did win pots, I didn't take down enough to make up for the beats.
There were a couple "trainee" dealers, with misdeals a plenty, and over the course of my stay I saw 4 reconstructed decks, which was a lot. There were a couple dealers who kept calling the floor over on themselves.
I hit a rule snag, too. On my first night, we had a fun table going, with lots of joking around. I put a (relatively weak) bet on the river, saying aloud "If you rasie me, I'll call!" (with the implication being, if you raise me, I'll fold...) He raised, I went to muck, and the dealer enforced the call. The floor agreed. I asked at other rooms, and "conditional verbal" is not binding. Furthermore at MGM, they USED to have it this way, but apparently changed there rules because of a NGC complaint. (Yes, I already lodged a complaint on MB..we'll see how that goes)
My last session was actually a big winner on Thurs. night, but it wasn't nearly enough to make up for the previous 20 or so hours that I ran badly.
I did Caesar's 11a tourney and cashed-- 5th place. I was actually chipleader with 12 remaining. Caught AA in position, raised 5x BB, only caller was the only guy at the table who had a competing stack. Flop was 8 5 3 rainbow, I pushed, he called with 888. I shortstack-fought my way back into mid-position. 5 players remaining. AA in position. 5x BB, flop 9 6 2 rainbow. I push. SAME GUY CALLS WITH 666. WTF?? Talk about being born under a bad sign. 5th place paid $485. Not too shabby for a $120 buy in. Also reassured me that I was playing good poker.
Played MGM for a few hours, mostly to get my food comp there. Always a great room, good dealers, good management. Good mix of players, but never caught anything. Furthermore, I had an all in fest on the flop with three other players. My KK overs were already beat by another's AA, which was already beat by flopped trips. The fourth player actually picked up his flush on the river. Another losing session.
On my last day, I played cash at the Venetian while the "celeb/novice" tourney got started up. Gorgeous room, but man, I cannot stand that absurd industrial strength air freshener they use. Makes me want to puke. Lots and lots of action thanks to the aforementioned tourney. Great dealers, but it was a tough crowd.
Doyle Brunson whizzed by my chair on his scooter with Cindy Violette on his lap drinking a glass of white wine. I saw a ton of Pros, and it almost made up for my losing 2-5 session. (Another big preflop raise by me with KK, smooth call, and flopped trips... What, was I born under a bad sign or something???)
I flopped quads twice on this trip, and barely extracted any money. It was totally feast or famine. I had very few "good starting hands" that remained a good hand.
I played the best poker of my life, though.. the 5 hours in the tourney were great and a load of fun.. definitley the "deepstack" tourney in vegas.
In summary: Avoid Mandalay Bay at all costs. It used to be a great place to go fishing, but the absurd rules, the mediocre dealers, and the reduced fishing make for a bummer of an experience. Although the new cocktail uniforms are pretty nice.. (small dresses like the wynn) Venetian is classy but smells bad. MGM is classy as always. Caesars room is good, but the Tourneys are GREAT.
