Action at Aladdin, Bellagio and Vegas nightlife
Date: 07/31/06
Player: rob112
For Rooms: Aladdin,Bellagio,Venetian,Wynn,
Summary: Limit Play at Aladdin and Bellagio, plus Vegas Nights (clubbing in Sin City)
Content: I am a limit player from Toronto Canada was in Vegas from 07/25 to 07/30 stayed at the Aladdin and first time playing poker in any Vegas casino (though not my first Vegas trip). The hotel itself is in a great location right across the street from Bellagio and right beside Paris. It is connected to a mall called the Desert Passage. Anyone looking for an internet connection w/ the option of printing can find it at a Pizza Place in the mall called White Harbor Merchant (I believe it was something like that), it is located right in the area where they create an artificial rain storm inside the mall. Cost is $5 for 20 minutes.
The hotel itself is undergoing construction and while still nice lacks the high-class feeling of some of (what I consider to be) the elite hotels ie Venetian, Bellagio, and Wynn. It has more of a Luxor-level quality about it but with lacking any true identity of its own. I got a promo code for a suite and was able to save over $600 on the stay when compared to the regular price, so it was a no-brainer to take the room.
Just one other side note regarding the Aladdin makeover to Planet Hollywood, the front desk guy told us that eventually every room w/in the hotel would be made over in movie themes. For example, there will be a Pulp Fiction room and a Harry Potter room and no two rooms will be the same.
I was in Vegas for a Stag Party so the poker playtime was limited. I will review what I experienced. Played at the Aladdin mostly due to the easy access. The Poker Area (there is no room due to construction) is roped off and located by PF Changs restaurant and the Wheel of Fortune Mega Slots. I wouldn’t say the noise from outside the area was a distraction at all, at least for me. I played 3-6 limit, they usually had 2 tables going. Tables aren’t in the greatest shape shoddy you could say. Chairs were average, no wheels. Dealers were friendly and made a couple of mistakes (like showing cards) per hour. I played here every day in the late afternoon/evening except Friday and only had to wait on Saturday for approx 20 minutes before getting into a table. Staff were friendly. The first day I made $120 in under an hour but was getting killer cards and connecting on the flop big time. Second day there was one suck-out at the table. One hand, on the turn, this guy acts out of turn, dealer tells him he had to wait to bet, since I knew he wanted to bet I check raised him. This guy gives me a dirty look and shakes his head, then on the river before I can even act he flips his cards over in satisfaction ‘teaching’ me not to mess w/ his two pair. I looked at him told him ‘that’s nice’ looked at the dealer and said ‘bet’. This guy gets pissed, actually calls me and I flip my higher two pair. See ya. Thankfully this instance was the exception and the tables were mostly friendly tourists.
The poker room has No Limit tourneys every day (you can get a schedule at the desk). I can’t tell you about the mornings but the afternoon one was always jammed and they have one at 2am too. The cash games were 1-2 and 2-5 NL.
Friday I wanted to go to the Grand Daddy so I hit the Bellagio. This hotel is literally night and day when compared with the Aladdin. It just oozes class. After playing at Aladdin I was blown away by the quality of Bellagio’s room. The tables were nicer; the chairs were more comfortable and very plush. The room was packed and the general atmosphere was exciting. It is a semi-enclosed structure right beside the Sports Book (which itself was magnificent). I played 4-8 limit here and was seated at a full table right away. They have auto deck shufflers and this was a major efficiency improvement over Aladdin where you have to wait for the dealer to shuffle than deal. The table competition was tougher than Aladdin but by no means unbeatable. Table was generally friendly except for this one instance. One guy (late 30s) in a suit who hadn’t slept since the day before (he had been partying all night, playing all day --- it was 4pm when I sat at this table) seemed to know another older guy at the table. Previous hands they were laughing w/ each other and raising each other but it all seemed very good-natured. All of a sudden, the older guy gets very upset and tells the other one not to say a word to him or ‘things will end very badly’ they wouldn’t quit so finally the dealer calls over the manager. His decision was for both to be quiet and play or else they will be banned for two hours (“they must take 2 hour walk” was the exact quote). Well they quieted down and things normalized after that. I played some more and left up $60 after 3.5 hours. Dealers were good, little to no mistakes and generally friendly. Waitress here was very poor, I had to leave my seat to order b/c she would not come around and I couldn’t get her attention then the drink came 20 mins later. Staff was very friendly. Again the ambiance was excellent. If anything, this room is a must-try for anyone who enjoys holdem.
Other rooms I saw but didn’t get the chance to play in were Venetian and Wynn. I was disappointed in Wynn’s, I thought it would at least be a rival to Bellagio but it didn’t come close, imo. It didn’t look as good and it just didn’t have that same ‘feel’ of what I got when entering Bellagio. Oh well, to each his own. The Venetian’s looked gorgeous and is on the to-do list for next trip.
Club-wise I went to Pure (Caesar’s), Tao (Venetian) and Tryst (Wynn). By far the nicest looking club was Tryst (Saturday night) this includes the club itself and its patrons. Next I would rate Tao (Thursday) and then Pure (Tuesday & Friday). Getting inside the mega clubs is an art form in itself. If you are just guys (even 2 man) and not getting bottle service/table reservations then you will have a tough time getting in (at least w/out a VIP hosting service, which themselves are pricey). These places get swamped outside by 10:30pm and even at 10:00 there is a lengthy line to get in or get close to the doormen holding the lists (guestlist/VIP/reservations). Bottle service is generally not cheap. To illustrate at Tao it’s a 2-bottle minimum starting at $400 and up, price does not include 7.75% sales tax and a 20% gratuity for the waitress. Tao has 2 lines regular and guest list, my advice: go early. Once past the rope you take an elevator up to the club. For drinks pricing I don't remember much but my first order was 5 shots Goldschlager and it ran $50.
Tryst has no line up so do not let the rope deceive you. They have 150 tables to fill and if you’re not someone who has reserved one then you basically wait behind the rope or “the line that never moves.” If you ask, you’ll be told that they won’t move the line until all tables are full (yeah right). The doormen w/ the lists walk up and down the hall scouting. Basically they choose and let in all the ‘hot girls’ and leave everyone else. By 11:00pm the front of the 'line' looks like Oktoberfest, all sausage. If you are just guys, then be prepared to grease big time (plus cover $30), the more guys the greasier it gets. Once inside this place is simply outstanding. Expensive drinks ($22 for 2 rye/coke) but gorgeous decor, they have a huge indoor waterfall and it almost seems like you are outside.
Pure is another club with a huge line (but it actually moves, ever so slowly). If you have guest list you must try and get through a sea of people to speak to a doorman. The club is bigger than Tao and Tryst and has an elevator leading to a nice outdoor patio. Beware the doorman Tony H. he is very deceitful. I had guest list on Tuesday and got in no problems with my friend (everyone else was coming Wednesday), but Friday I dealt w/ this character and he will smile and tell you give him a couple of minutes, or wait in the back and he’ll ‘signal’ you to go in. If you are guys this is just a lie he will leave you and screw your night (remember the longer you wait the harder it is to get in anywhere). We finally got wise to this piece of trash and went in through a different route. The only reason we even waited for this piece of garbage was b/c we would have got the cover comped, otherwise no chance. I can’t say if this is common or if it’s just this guy who was an ass, but beware, some doormen may give you a glimmer you’re getting in but have no intention of doing squat for you. They may be keeping you there to maintain the club’s image of 'place to be'. My advice: be polite, but be aggressive. Find out what the ‘deal’ is and go from there.
All in all a great trip and great time, so much to do, see and experience. Can’t wait till the next one.
