2-4 Drunken Grind
Date: 07/29/06
Player: cunninglinguist
For Rooms: Excalibur (Live),Luxor,Mandalay Bay,Monte Carlo,

Summary: So I went to Vegas from 7/20-7/23 and was determined to play a lot of poker an also have a good time doing it. To do this I decided to forgo the higher limits where everyone seemed so serious and focused on the drinking crowd, the 2-4 game.

Content: The trip began on Thursday July 20th at the Excalibur, and after a few room beers I headed over to the Monte Carlo because of previous experience there and positive reviews from this site. The only game that was seating was 2-4 limit and I pulled up a chair w/ $100.

The room is very quiet and away from alot of the action, but it was a nice relaxing atmosphere. It sort of felt like a speakeasy or fancy library or something. All of the players were friendly and nice enough, and my table had 4 women. Everyone played solid, but the low limits and high hand bonuses kept people in way too long. Like five minutes after I sat down one woman flopped a wheel straight flush that would have paid her $492, but the 6 came on the river and voided the jackpot because both hole cards must pay. The funny thing was that she wasn't even that mad about it (Probably becasue she didn't really understand what was happening). After that people would chase to the river with any two cards. Anyway, I left up $17 after two hours of play.

At this point it was like 1:00 am and I was quite drunk, so I stumbled back to Excalibur, rallyed in the room for a bit, and set back down to the floor.

The Excalibur poker room is sort of one end of the casino, and wasn't very impressive to me. In fact the whole Excalibur wasn't very impressive to me. Too many fat people. I played for about 3 hours and ended up ahead another $17. I then passed out.

The next morning brought a wicked hangover and four hours of down time while we changed over rooms to the Mandalay Bay. I headed to Luxor to check out their noon tourney. This site has it listed as a $21 tournement, but it is really a $30 w/ an optional $3 immediate buy on.

I sat down and immediately wished I hadn't just entered a poker tournement. I forgot I was hung over, so I spent the first half hour trying not to puke all over everything. It wasn't the best frame of mind to be in if I wanted to do well. All I wanted to do was find a hand to bust with, but I kept getting absolute garbage, so I hung around. After about 40 minutes I still hadn't won a hand, but the original 51 people had been whittled down to two tables. I was forced to go all in on the big blind, got 4 callers and looked down to A7. When an ace flopped I quadrupled up. The next hand brought A2 and another flopped ace. I checked raised the biggest stack all in, and his pair of jacks turned into 2 pair after the river. I busted out 13th out of 51 without even really trying. The top 7 cashed so no money.

After that I decided to stick to cash games because I thought my chances to make money were better, plus I liked the option of getting up and cashing out whenever I wanted. Sometimes I don't feel like playing for hours in a row.

That night brought a return to Luxor to play in 2-4 limit, and I lost $67 in about 2.5 hours. The vibe at the table was all wrong and I knew it immediately. I should have walked away sooner, but stubborness tried to see me through for awhile. They also don't have good high hand jackpots, so when my buddy got quad fours he only won a measly $20.

I then headed to Mandalay Bay where I stayed for the rest of the trip. Their Poker Room is really cool. It is right next to the sports book, so there are tons of big TVs and sports odds in view, especially if you have a good seat. However, it is also separate enough to feel like its own room.

It is also close to clubs, so when I played from 11pm-1am there was PLENTY of hot girls to admire while on bathroom and smoke breaks.
The night I played there was a big fight, so that just added to the energy. Overall the experience was excellence.

At Mandalay they also have big high hand jackpots
(A royal flush in spades was worth like $1600!). Soon enough for me a flop comes 9 10 3 hearts. I'm holding JQ hearts, so I'm open ended. The turn comes a K of hearts, so I've nailed it! I look at the payout sheet and see that I've won $214. Of course it had to be the one that was worth the least, but I wasn't complaining too much. Although if the A of hearts had rivered it would have been worth $774 for the royal.

Not long after I won the guys sitting next to me hit quads 6s for like $300. The good news for everyone was that he was at least drunk (and probably more), and was giddy about his win. After that every time he won a hand he would give EVERY PERSON AT THE TABLE a dollar chip! Every once in a while he'd give some one else a five, and once he even gave a person walking by some money. He game my friend $6 just for thanking him! And the dealers cups were overflowing with his money. I made probably $12-15 just by sitting there. Needless to say, he brought the energy level up at our table, and it was probably the funnest 2 hours I've spent in Vegas in a long time.

However, good things always end too early, and soon the guy went cold, the tables's mood changed, and it cost me about $60 of profit before I realized it. I walked away up $169.

I played a few more sessions and won between $13 and $60 each time and end the trip up about $300 total.

Overall it was fun playing 2-4 but it was almost like a different game than higher limits. It only cost $4 to see the flop and turn, and every preflop raise was in $2 incriments, so it was impossible to bet people off their hands. I got AA once on the button and looked in horror as 7 people called my raise up to $4. Of course they were cracked. Suited connectors were almost better than high pairs becasue of drawing potential.

However, it was nice to play against friendly players who were there to have a good time, and not steal all of your money. All you had to do was be patient and wait for a monster pot to come your way. As long as a person doesn't get thrown by the inevitable bad beat, they can clean up with their good hands.

The key is to find a table that you like and are comfortable at. If you don't like the people at the table you are playing at, LEAVE! There are a million more, and even if you lose if you have a fun experience while doing so it doesn't seem so bad.

Good luck!

(and thanks agains for all the chips Samir!)
