2-4 Hold Em Downtown July 4th Week
Date: 07/13/06
Player: Master Shake
For Rooms: Binion's,Golden Nugget,Plaza,

Summary: Went to Vegas for a mini family reunion, played 2-4 Hold Em Downtown and checked out WSOP

Content: Stayed Downtown, played at Binion's, Golden Nugget, and the Plaza. My impressions:

Golden Nugget: First room I played, it is semi-enclosed in the casino. Kind of loud with slot machines close by and loud music. Got put on wait list but had to hang out real close because otherwise wouldn't have heard my name called. Played 2-4 Hold Em, a mix of loose tourists and tighter, solid locals. The locals were friendly and talkative, tourists played anything and frequently sucked out.

Binion's: Quiet compared to the Golden Nugget, could hear a lot of chip ruffling. Played 2-4 Hold Em, seemed to be mostly tourists, some locals. Won the most here but again a lot of loose action tourists sucking out against top pair. They run four $60 NL tourneys a day but didn't have time to play in any of them.

Plaza: I like Downtown, but even by Downtown standards the Plaza seemed worn and tired. They were filming a movie called "The Grand" but had finished filming when I got there. Only one table running, played 2-4 Hold Em, seemed like everyone was a low-limit local, but lots of chasing. Worst I saw was when AQ got chased down by two guys holding 85 and hitting a runner-runner straight. Then one of the 85 guys told the other that he was a poor player because at least his 85 was suited. Interesting thing was that while we played, two attractive women walked around the casino in bathrobes. Wasn't sure if they were in the movie or what, but it sure turned some heads.

WSOP: Went to the Rio to eat at the Carnival buffet with family, definitely two thumbs up! Also, went to see the final table of Event No. 9, the $5,000 buy-in NLHE. The final table was exciting with several big names, you definitely shouldn't miss it when it plays on ESPN. Room was definitely buzzing when it got down to final two. Saw Doyle Brunson playing Chinese poker with Phil Ivey, Barry Greenstein, Eli Elezra, and Gus Hansen at their own private table, throwing around big denominated chips like they were play chips. Also a lot of freebies from the internet poker sites.

My only regret was that I didn't realize Fitzgerald's had the grand opening of their poker room while I was there. I saw the ad in a poker magazine that I was reading on the plane ride back home. Oh well.

Thanks to all the AVP posters, I definitely read up on all the trip reports before my trip. I hope this trip report has been helpful.
