July 4th Week. 4/8 Limit action at MGM and Excalibur
Date: 07/11/06
Player: DJ Slash
For Rooms: Excalibur (Live),MGM Grand,
Summary: A night and day difference between the two rooms play out over the course of 5 solid days of play.
Content: I had read the reports on AllVegasPoker before I left, and had played at MGM last year. I was actually staying at Excalibur this year so I figured I would try out their room.
I had read that Excalibur was more "Kitchen Table" poker and from reading had thought it was only on the low spread limit tables. I could not have been more wrong. They play it on 4-8 too. People calling with anything and nothing all the way to the river. Took some really bad beats. Had KK beat by 3 9 off and he called a 4 bet before the flop. Still at the end of 3 days playing between here and MGM I was up about 150 at Excalibur. You just need to keep enough chips in front of you for those really bad beats. Dealers were good, didnt have any major problems and management was ok, but nothing to write home about.
Now to the room I would recommend to anyone and everyone and that is the MGM Grand. A lot of solid play on 4-8 as people tended to take the game more serious. Which is good for my tight-aggressive play. In 5 days of play here, which I swear I averaged anywhere from 8-12 hours of play a day I was up about 800 for the trip including the best 6 hand strech in my life. Started out with 55 in the sb and called a 2 bet to the flop, flop comes up 885 so naturally I bet, three players on the flop, one had A8, the other JJ so needless to say it was a betting bonanza. We capped the flop, turn and three bet the river when cards were turned over and I was feeling really good about myself. The next 4 hands hit me in the sweet spot and by the time the 6th hand came I was on a rush and had the table frazzled that I bluffed to the river with 29 and got the guy to fold best hand. My favorite dealer was no doubt Devon, he was a trip at the table, superfast dealer that kept things entertaining so early in the morning. Management was great, and with the exception of a lapse of an hour at 7 in the morning cocktail was always quick and right on the money. (I dont drink but redbull is really good at a poker table during a 14 hour marathon).
All in all it was a night and day experience, MGM with good solid play, and Excalibur with calling stations all around. I had alot of patience, but even my nerves got frazzled playing at Excalibur.
