6 tourneys, 4 final tables, only cashed once!
Date: 06/12/06
Player: GoodmanJr
For Rooms: Bally's,Caesars Palace,Orleans,Paris,

Summary: I played in 6 tournaments at Caesars Palace, Paris, Bally's and Orleans. Made it to the final table 4 times, and only cashed once. I felt good about my overall play, but was bummed that only made the money one time.

Content: I went out to Vegas with a couple of buddies from 6/8 - 6/10. Since I got the free pass from the wifey, I had only thing on my mind. I wanted to play in as many poker tournaments as I could. Being from Orlando, Florida, I do not have access to a lot of live action (except for home games, dog track in Daytona Beach, and Hard Rock in Tampa). So when I go to Vegas, I try to mix it up as much as I can. This was my 3rd time out in LV.

I had been researching tournaments on-line for the past couple of weeks, so I pretty much knew where and when I wanted to play. We arrived in Vegas around 1 PM on Thursday. We were staying at Paris. The room was very nice, and it is in a great location (in the middle of the strip). Also Harrah's Total Rewards program is pretty sweet. My buddy had comps galore. Anyway, I played some table games for a couple of hours, and decided to catch a cab over to Orleans for their 7 PM Omaha Hi-Lo tournament. I have been playing a lot of Omaha Hi-Lo lately on Pokerstars.com and have been doing pretty well. Since I never have played Omaha live, I wanted to get there early to practice (I seemed to have a problem handling 4 cards, memorizing them, etc.) So I played a little 4-8 limit Omaha Hi-Lo to get my feet wet. I actually won about $60 in about an hour.

There were 82 people in the 7 PM tourney, and I ended up at the final 2 tables and placed 18. Top 10 paid. I was a little bummed, but proud of myself because it was my first live Omaha tournament. I actually did make back $20 in bounties, as I knocked out 4 people in the throughout the tournament. The Orleans poker room is great because there are a lot of tables, but there were a lot of local old-timers there. So I definitely felt like a visitor. Most were very nice, with a few crotchety old ladies. One got mad at me because while I was deciding whether or not to call her I kept asking her if whe filled out the straight with an Q-10. She said, "will you shut up, there are still more people in the hand". So I correctly folded. She turned over the Q-10. I guess it was bad etiquette to be predicting her hand, but she was sitting next to me and I wasn't talking that loud. Jeeez! There was another lady, who was probably about 70. She kept falling asleep at the table. She would only wake up to look at her cards and if she was in a hand. Unreal! Turns out as I busted out, I looked over at the other table. Low and Behold, Sleeping Beauty was still in it. I chuckled to myself, thinking nobody will ever get a read on her. She sleeps at the table. What a great poker face.

Next morning, I headed over to Caesars to try and qualify for the Vegas Open. They were running $240 satellites SNG's for the $1000 entry tourney at Noon. Top two got entry in the tourney. I placed 4th. Oh well! Gave it a shot.

Headed back over to Paris for the 1:30 PM tourney. This is when my frustration started to mount. There were 40 people in this tourney, and they only pay the top 3. I don't agree with this format. I think they should pay more spots, at least 5 or 6. I say this because I busted out in 6th place. There isn't much to Paris's poker room, except the competition is very soft. Lots of home game players, calling stations, etc.

My next move was to head back over to Caesars for their $220 7 PM tourney. Caesars has a great structure. 40 minutes blinds. You get $1500 chips with a one rebuy at $3000 chips. You can rebuy anytime up to the first break. So basically you get $4500 chips. So if you bust out early, the $3000 rebuy puts you right back in the mix. Luckily, I didn't utilize the rebuy until the first break as I was playing great poker. There were 55 people in the tourney, and I ended up placing 9th. And guess what, only top 5 paid. I ended up going all in with A-K. There was this beautiful chick at our table, who everybody was gawking at. She seemed very ditsy, but she was an excellent poker player. Anyway, she calls me with A-J. And of course, J comes out on the flop. I ended up running into her the following night's tourney and she told me that they ended up chopping the pot at 8 people right after I busted out. What a bitch right? Actually, she was very nice. But I bullied her a little bit..that second night in the tourney so I ended feeling a little better about it. :^)

Next morning (Saturday), played in the Paris 9:30 AM tourney. Was on total tilt fumes from teh previous two days, and busted out early. Just in time for Bally's 11 AM $120 buy-in. There was about 25 people in this tournament, and I made it to the top 4. We ended up chopping the pot, and I walked with $400. Next hand went all in with K-2 suited, busted out. But at least I got paid. The other 3 guys were totally cool, and everybody was happy to chop the pot. Believe me, it sucks getting close to cashing, and busting out. Bally's poker room is a little better than Paris, but again nothing special. Caesars definitely provided the best experience.

So it was my last night before heading home, and I headed back over to Caesars to play in their 7 PM tourney again. I think there was about 48 people in the tourney this time. I was playing extremely well, and found myself as the chip leader with 12 people left. I had about $30K in chips with everbody else sitting around $15K or less. Then the following hand happens. I am sitting with J-6 in the big blind. One guy raises 3X big blind, and I call. Flop comes K-4-6. I bet around half the pot, and he calls. The next card is a J. Now I'm sitting on two pair J's and 6's I check it, trying to trap. He puts in a nice sized bet, and I go all in. He reluctantly calls. He flips over K-10. He gets up as if he is ready to leave. The river is another 4. He wins with two pair K's and 4's. I lost about half my stack, and now he is the new chip leader. That pretty much crippled me. I made a couple of more moves, with no success. I ended up busting out at 10.

So in summary, I feel I played very well. I made the final table at Caesar's both nights, and the competition was very good. Not to mention played well at Paris, Bally's, and Orleans. Unfortunatly my winnings didn't show for it. I'm heading back to LV with my wife and sister in August. I will definitely be back at Caesar's to give that 7 PM tourney another whirl.
