Stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton for conference purposes. Played 3-6 limit hold-em. They also had a 1-2/$100 buy-in no limit game going. That table made up mostly of young locals and 1 or 2 tourists. The room itself is rather low-key but comfortable and well lighted. Located adjacent to the sports book and the buffet. They don’t offer any tournaments, but do have a progressive jackpot for quads/straight flushes (only to $599 for income tax purposes). Was lucky enough to catch quad tens for $95. Both hole cards must play. Pocket tens going runner runner to fill up.
Table consisted of a smattering of local young bulls, retired rocks, and the rest out-of-towners. It was fairly easy to figure out the young ram and jammer types as opposed to the rock of Gibraltar retirees. The tourists all tended to be calling stations. Being a social worker by profession, I took pity on a middle-aged lady who played way too many hands. Giving her some gentlemanly advice that maybe she could be more selective in the choice of hands she played. Unfortunately, she was pretty stubborn and usually ended up taken second place more times than not.
Second day, I ventured over to Circus Circus for more 3-6-limit hold-em. Seems like the clown marquee is a dead give away as to the types of players that are at the table. Pretty crazy to say the least. Patience, patience, patience, should be the by-word here. Lots of chips to be won if you keep from getting caught up in all of the pots that are capped at least once during the betting rounds. Couldn’t sustain any kind of a rush, but did collect one nice pot of $150 that made up for some previous losses/suck outs.
Played at the Stardust on the last day in their $40 no rebuy morning tournament. Made the final table but not the money end of it. This is a fun low stakes tournament that is a nice way to get some tournament experience. Again, the key is patient, tight aggressive play. Even so, I lost out to a couple of marginal calling stations who I went all in with big pocket pairs pre-flop. Just goes to show you that no matter what the stakes are, people are there to gamble, period.
