5 Days in Vegas; Business/Cards
Date: 05/03/06
Player: BarbarianDave
For Rooms: Aladdin,Excalibur (Live),Imperial Palace,MGM Grand,
Summary: Played at the Aladdin, MGM, Imperial Palace and Excaliber
Content: In the past I have played mostly limit games up to 4/8, but lately I am trying to improve my small stakes NL game.
First stop was the Aladdin where I’ve had success in the past. Played some $1-$2 NL and the players were half young gun cowboys who push all-in with Top Pair and then call you a fish when you try to draw out with a straight – flush draw and hit on the river. The other half were semi-tight decent players with the occasional drunk thrown in. Ended the evening down $100 due to being card dead and losses with top two pair to set and a set over set. Some guy hit quad 9’s and got paid out $500 for high hand.
Played in the Aladdin tournament and made the final table, but went all in with huge blinds and a small chip stack from late position with TT. Lost when A9o hit the A on the flop. This structure pays to be very tight up to the first break, and then tight - very aggressive as the blinds increase.
Played at Imperial Palace tournament and made the final table. This time went all in with 88 from late position and lost to a TT on the button. Went to dinner and then saw the guy that busted me collecting the $1100 in first place money. This tournament is beatable and one of my favorites.
Returned to the cash game at the Imperial where I had played prior to the tournament start and finished down $100 as a result of being card dead and then getting impatient and pushing with mediocre hands. Lost a big pot that I got too aggressive with AQ against AK that pretty much sealed my fate.
Played in the $2-$4 cash game at Excaliber and slowly doubled up to $200 over 3 hours, then moved to a new $1-$2 NL game caught JJ first hand and doubled up again when the other guy went all-in with top pair of 9’s. He was super aggressive and was big betting everything and daring anyone to enter a pot with him. I got tired of waiting for another legitimate hand that I could call big bets with and cashed in my winnings.
Played another session of $1-$2 NL at the Imperial $200 over 4 hours due to villains calling to the river with weak draws and hitting, but I had enough comp hours from the previous day ($14) to get steak and eggs at the diner upstairs.
Played my last session at the MGM. Sat down at 6pm and stayed until about 6 am at the $1-$2 NL tables with a dinner break in between. Finished the night up $300 from both sessions, but spent the last 3 hours just horsing around with the other guys. (lots of limping and minimum raising) Had a blast as it turned into a drinking game where we all avoided big pots. I have never laughed so much playing in a public card room. Shout out to Anaheim Mike and Big Sam.
Overall in the trip finished down $300 including tourney fees, but had a great time.
