A tale of two tournaments
Date: 03/02/06
Player: rumdiver
For Rooms: Excalibur (Live),Luxor,
Summary: I tried out the low level tournaments at Excalibur then Luxor. They use two very different formats that you need to watch out for.
Content: As I do most trips, I try out morning freeze out tournaments. It gives me something to do while other sleep in, and it is a pretty cheap way of waking up my gambling mind. I started with a 9 AM tourny at Excalibur. They didn't have them a few months ago, they have them now. Buy in was about 40 or 35 total. There were 4 tables of people playing. At my table, were at least 2 locals who were very friendly.
The tournament is No-limit, with blinds going up every 15 minutes to keep things moving. The problems with a low buy in are the same everywhere, a lot of people trying poker out and people who think they are sharks who try to go all in on every hand to get the blinds. There was only one of each at my table. The "shark" was dealt with quickly after three hands and the newer players were guided along the structure and not given slack for inexperience. I like that. One man pushed out him cards then thought better of it and tried to retract the fold. He was stopped. All in all a good atmosphere and a friendly game. Perfect for 9AM.
After losing it all on two pairs to trips, I still was in the tournament mood so I remembered Luxor had a 10 or 11 AM tourny. I had played it once and found that I liked the dealors if not the structure. I still don't like the structure. Pricing is similar although they offer $50 more in chips at the table if you pay $3. Who doesn't? Why not just raise the price and not bother.
The tournament had about 9 tables, I could be wrong. I sat at a nine person table where they quickly tried to cram 10 people into. There were more "I saw this on tv" people at this time as sunglasses started appearing. More people trying to prove they could play by talking about hands and bets non stop and others refusing to let the poker face drop. Different atmosphere.
To my right, was a middle aged woman who would not shut up. After I bluffed her out of a decent chunk, she couldn't stop jabbering "She had two pair, or Aces. She had at least aces." After she beat another by getting her own aces on the turn, she kept asking why the person kept betting their pocket queens. She would not let it go. This is where the structure comes in.
Luxor tournament is limit poker for the first hour, then it switches to no limit. I remember disliking this my first trip and I was no great fan this time either. Sure, you avoid the fools whose whole strategy is to go all in from the beginning and hope people are scared away each hand. And it is good for newcomers because odds are they can last longer and end up feeling more secure and more likely to play more poker. It's good for the casino. But, it can really keep things slow that first hour. People have no reason not to see the flop and any cards after. Even if they lose, there will still be cards left.
I guess that is just personal choice. The no-limit tourny had people going from the second hand. The luxor tourny is advertised as no limit then they throw in an hour of painful limit play. An hour to watch people hold on to that one king in the pocket hoping to match it up on the river. But it is a good place to take your friend who has never played. They will get their moneys worth of play.
