Donkey Dodging
Date: 01/21/06
Player: M236
For Rooms: Binion's,Plaza,
Summary: Played in the luxurious Downtown section of Vegas..... made for some interesting people/stories.
Content: We landed in Vegas on the 15th of January for some good times and gambling fun. We had a group of 7 with about half of us consistent hold em players and the other half just enjoy anything that they can bet their money on. After waiting at the airport prior to departure and having about a four hour plane ride most of us were pretty much on our way to having a good time( Thanks Miller Lite).
Once at the airport we gathered our belongings and were met by our limo driver. We decided as a group to rent a limo to take us to our hotel as most had not been to Vegas before, and thought this would enhance the experience( and it did). So we pull into a liquor store lot to buy some booze. As were exiting the limo and entering the store there was a group of about 6 guys shooting craps outside the store. As we walk by them the store attendant, a young male about 20, comes outside and tells them they have to leave or buy something. This led to an argument about them having more money then the clerk and that he better get his punk ass back in the store before he gets knocked out. So now we are standing in the store watching this unfold. The clerk says "I got something for you all" and runs back into the store, jumps the counter and grabs a baseball bat. Now he reexits the store and starts swinging this bat around like Canseco on juice. One of the guy then reaches into his pocket and starts to pull something out, we did not see what he pulled out as we were all ducked down behind a barrier to prevent being struck by the errant rounds about to be fired off. The males then left, we bought our beer and were back on our way.... whew!!!
So we arrive downtown and were all staying at seperate casinos. We decide to meet at the Plaza to start our gambling trip. Most of us decided to start by playing roulette which was just outside of the Poker room (actually area). After a strong showing in Roulette. I walked over to watch one of my friends who was in a $35 sit n go. The Plaza runs these from about 10AM to 6 ish. They are $35 and are 10 people. They pay out the Top 2 with first getting 225 and second 75. I decided to not play poker the first day as I was concentrating on increasing my Blood alcohol content, and we were on our way to Coyote Ugly. After Coyote Ugly and dropping a lot of money on $6 beers we returned to the Plaza.
One of my friends who was extremely intoxicated had recently learned the Poker Term "Donkey" was along. Now this friend does not play much poker at all, but was in the Poker room as we were all scoping out the early 4AM action. As we were standing there watching two guys play NL Holdem 1-2 heads up. My friend decided to utilize his newly learned term of Donkeys and complete it in a sentence using these two players. As my friend asked out loud as they were heads up, "Donkeys!!! Right!!! Donkeys!!!" pointing at the two players who have now looked up from their hands and started to stare at us. We decided to call it a night.
The next day I woke up and went down to the Plaza card room. I decided to give the $35 sit n go a shot. I found this tourney to be very easy pickings and cruised to a first place finish. I only ended up in playing in just the one, but wish I would have just played in those as there were a lot of first time players/beginners who were not very good. I then worked my way into a 2-4 Limit game. I ended up playing at the same table for about 10 hours. I ended up about 100 bucks for that session which i felt was a lot after playing at a very loose table with people chasing down everything which is a usual for limit poker. I witnessed two people to my left one of which was one of my buddies, hit the high hand jackpot which was an an added bonus to the game. The Plaza criteria was you must have two of the cards in your hand, and it was anything from quad dueces all the way up to a royal flush. Each category 2222, or a 7 high straight flush has their own jackpot which is raised each day at a percentage. The jackpot starts at 25, and is capped at 500. In this day about 6 High hands were hit. Someone hit the Royal Flush which was at the 500 cap.
I got into the Midnight tournament which had about 30 people with a 68 entry fee and an optional 30 rebuy in the first hour. I did not do so hot in the tourney as I was unfortunately moved throughout all three tables just as I began to get a read for some players.
After my exit from the tournament,my friend PJ who had started talking to this 40 something female at his table, who was pretty good looking, we decided to stay to cheer her on at the final table. Now as PJ was getting his hopes up for some post tourney action we quickly noticed that there was another 40 something female who was also cheering her on. So we thought cool, friends. We were quick to place a read on them both that they had no interest in anybody but each other... OUCH!!!! They did end up being fun to hang out with though.
While waiting the outcome of the tourney we asked one of the Poker room managers if we could get a drink. I think his name was derrick. he was pretty cool and called for the drink lady. When the drink lady arrived we placed our orders and another room manager some guy with no personality put a stop to the orders. He said it is only for players. I tried to explain to him that i just got done playing for the last 14 hours and was now watching the final table. He would have none of that. This was kind of a kick in the nuts as we had spent a lot of time in that room and one drink made it sour.
The next day we did return and played at the Plaza. I sat down at 2-4 and played for about 6 hours, leaving down about 20. I did enter the 7pm tourney which was 48 with a 20 rebuy. I ended up coming back from an under the gun Big blind coming next forced all in. I quadrupled up when i made a K high flush on the turn. It was all good from there, as I ended up chopping the final table 5 ways for about 300 and some a piece. We played on the bubble for about 2 hours prior to this. 300 gave us just under second place money.
Later i found out that my friend PJ had came over the top of a raise and a reraise with his AA in a NL game only to be called by QQ. Lets just say the other guy made his high hand jackpot of QQQQ. This made for about 1,000 retells of this story for the rest of the trip to anyone and everyone he saw or ran into.
On the last day i went back to the Plaza where I played in some early AM 2-4 limit. I'll tell you this is when the real winners come out. There was some old guy at our table who was telling us TJ Cloutier stories as if they were best friends, and how he reraised TJ out of a big pot, and how TJ..... It was pretty annoying and he did not like our drunken comments.
I ended up down about 17 this session as this one dork live strattled every chance he got. That was about as annoying as TJ's best friend. Later that night I entered the Binions 8PM Tourney. I think it was about 70 with a rebuy of 40. This was a well run tournament with an actual tournament feel to it. It was pretty cool playing in the same room as some of the greats. I ended up out about 50th out of 100, but still a good time. I wish I would have played in more of the tournaments at Binions.
Well that was the trip. I recommend the PLAZA for its 35 sng's. The Binions for its Tournaments. I want to get back in September and get back on the strip and meet some normal people. Good luck!!
