Summary: poker gods smiling-keep away from other games

Content: had planned this trip since march 08-the five of us coming over from london on virgin to play poker and basically have a great time.im 49 so as the elder statesman of the party before we left england i had explained too my crew about the perils of vegas
1 pace yourself both in gambling and drinking
2 remember gambling has its ups and down
3 and most important vegas was built on gambling incorrectly ie chasing losses and not budgeting...budget each day and stick too it...and dont gamble just for the sake of it

anyway we will see that half of my advice was not taken...at least age has wisdom if nothing else lol

anyway flew into vegas on 10th of november for a week with adam(beeky) chris(likes a drink) olly(scuttling rat ) and bob my son-the sort of gambler vegas likes impulsive and always has losing story.....i think weve all heard of that one.

flight was on time-got limo to harrahs-checked in using $20 dollar trick for upgradeon our three rooms worked sweet....only booked mon to thurs at $55 dollars at night which is great compared to comparable prices in england

we freshened up and explored our immediate envoirement....harrahs was a good choice as it is centrally located and amongst the middle of anything...played a bit of poker that night next door at imperial palace til we hit the sack at about 10 pm.

now i had written out an plan of tournements to play --cheap buy ins-and get a feel of the casinos and the ambience--to try to have some structure to our trip..it worked a little

tuesday--played the 11 00 am ballys tourney...about 30 runners ...adam doing best coming 2nd...should of won heads up but gods smiling on opponent...anyway a good start...we all played no limit at harrahs ...ust bought in for $100 each time and did ok...i thought there was a credit crunch but more fish here than the atlantic

im not the greatest player..but basically just play cautious and a to z poker --you really couldnt lose in long run...

memorable hands for me in cash play at harrahs over the week

hand 1...get dealt a 4 ---$10 dollar round four to the flop of a 2 3..guy bets out $15 two folds i flat call---turn a 4 bingo...he bets out &60..alarm bells thought initially he could of had ace with big kicker or a continuation bet on flop...now im tinking hes got a2 a3 or the dreaded a5..anyway i put him on one of these three hands and im beating two of them so i put him all in for an extra $100 --he insta calls--hes got the a 5 for a straight but the good old dealer flips the case ace on river to boat him...i said sorry he was ok about it

hand 2

get dealt 22 after working my way up to $200..no pre flop raises so 5 to flop jack high rags...guy bets out $5 into a $10 pot two callers and i call for value....lovely duece on turn..this guy bets out $40..must have raggedy two pair..hes has about another $500 in front so im no threat so i put him all in..he tanks laughing saying ive got set of dueces...good read..i look away trying to give him false reads..anyway hecalls with flopped two pair..he doesnt boat so im well up cursing himself for slow playing flop...well thats the danger of wanting action tthen being scuppered

hand 3

now ive been at this table for with about an hour with the biggest fish ever seen since moby dick..he would call any bet on flop even if he had bottom pair to suck out opponents which he had done frequently...anyway this hand came about which served him his just deserts..just a shame it wasnt me.....the flop is a T 7 and this scot bets out $30 fish calls....now i can tell you the scot has a T FOR TWO PAIR with the fish having a 2.....we get to the river and the poor old fish hits his duece for hes supposedly two pair winning hand...putting the scot predictably all in for a insta call...talk about the expression on his plate...priceless

wednesday

we all get monorail to sahara for morning tourney..casino seemed to be very quiet and not at all inspiring...anyway we all sit down with bob and chris the worse for wear from the night before..actually they looked qute ill..told them to pace themselves lol....anyway i actually won the whole thing....we chopped when were down to last four...adam chopping aswell and playing for spare dollars for first which i won plus a nice tee shirt which i waswell chuffed with...just one poker question about ettiquette which id like feedback on

were down to about 6 left when the short stack goes all in ...i call with another...flop is rags and i hit bottom pair ..local checks and i bet and he starts moaning about we should check it down and hes stating hes got middle pair with good kicker...he folds and the all in guys win with his middle pair bad kicker...this guys got right hump but i feel he should raise me on flop to get me out of hand

i just feel you should play fairly irrelevant of circumstances..just the british way i suppose

left sahara after 5 hours of play...found it quite tiring as i prefer cash games in 1-2hour spurts...how do others feel about this

anyway get to hotel to tell others of my win..bobs not too impressed..thinks im crap and just lucky...typical sons reaction

played o sheas in evening...even though its small its really popular and a fun place..went to bed earlyish still getting grips with jet lag the others except for adam went clubbing..pure nightclub i think

wake up thursday mornin about 6 ish to find adam up so me and him just venture out to the mirage and TI just too looking round....played a bit of roulette which is fun...spoke to staff who said business is really slow...the downturn has really hit vegas bad..anyway broke even and went over to TI.....justwalking thru when i pull out $40 to play on a slot...adams gives me $10 TO GO IN FOR 20 PER CENT ....i hit jackpot on tenth spin for a lovely $1600 jackpot wey hey...slots guy comes over asking for passport...i have to send adam too hotel room to get my passport...i wait an eternity...and he finally arrives with guess who...its funny how sons get out of bed when they sniff the green stuff lol..back to hotel

now bob the worlds greatest gambler had already done his bankroll of $1400 basically over two days...thru bad gambling and clubbingandthis was my first major mistake..i lent him $900 which i didnt mind but i should of spread it over the rest of the trip as u can guess what happened he was skint again virtually by friday

payed poker again and kept grinding out little wins which forgetting the slots win i was breaking even but losing on rouleete and other table games...i didnt mind i had only brought $1000 plus my atm card for emergency....end of each day i would still have my original bankroll

on friday my sister and nephews were flying in from fresno sfo and reno respectively...had arranged with sis to meet her by flamingo poker room as she was staying in flamingo....sat down at usual 1 2 no limit and after about an hour had rose from $100 to $650 thru just hitting some hands..floopped a straight once but nothing extraordinary......just feel that online poker hands seem to be contrived whereas live poker hitting top pair is normally good enough to take pot down....anyway sis arrives and i cash out for a nice profit and se takes me over to bills with her hubby for a nice steak which i wholly recomend
we went to lawrys on sunday night for a steak which in my opinion is overpriced and not a patch on bills,,,just paying for the ambience really

over the weekend just played it by ear..my nephew had comped room at hard rock which was immense.....drinking tequilla and smoking cigars looking out onto the pool and the rear of the strip.....terrific view..lasting memory really..vegas is really something else...it got it all

it was a great trip...will be coming again in september for ten nights....will prob split trip in two....5 nights at stratosphere to take in north end of strip and poss harrahs again for final 5 nights

what i learned was that tiredness does set in as trip progresses and one tends to venture just in your local hotel area...i wanted to go to venetian bellagio caesars etc but never got around to it....
from a gambling point of view well up on poker but down on table games....broke about even really which i would of settled for before we set out...a great place to visit and addictive but nowhere like it anywhere on earth and its only 10 hours from london...
