Poker Room Rate: Yes Daily Room Rates: $39(Sunday -Thursday) $59 (Friday & Saturday) Daily Play Requirement: 4-5 hours Editor's Review - Sahara Poker Room Total Rating: 3.20 Room Quality Rating: 3 **Last Update: 08/31/09** The Sahara poker room is the oldest continuously operating card room in Nevada. Opening in 1956 (obviously remodeled and moved a few times), the poker room at Sahara is quite vintage in all areas including vibe, décor, staff, and cocktail service. A unique aspect of the Sahara poker room is the fact that their three daily tournaments are the backbone of the room, much more than their cash games. They run three tournaments a day, all with the same buy in ($45 + single $20 rebuy) and structure. The tournaments run at 11AM (smallest), 7PM (largest), and 11PM. The 7PM often has 100+ players, making the top prize in excess of 2K. The structure is quite good considering the value (6K in chips with the rebuy, 20 minute levels, with blinds starting at 25/50), but the later levels include highly escalating blinds with a very top heavy payout that encourages chopping. The room aesthetics are quite basic. The room has two solid walls, and two rails that complete the square room. There are no auto shufflers, and the accoutrements of the room are quite worn down (the dealer buttons are so worn that a few have the word “Dealer” completely rubbed off). In the rear of the room is a water cooler, as well as a buffet table where complimentary sandwiches are brought out for the 7PM tournament players that make it to the first break. As expected, the chairs are basic, worn down chairs. The room does offer a few plasma screen televisions throughout the room, but those are usually used for displaying the tournament clocks. As of August 2009, the room has brand new felts on all tables. Considering that the old felts dated back several years, it is nice and refreshing to see new branded felts in use. The wall décor is part and parcel to the hotel theme of the Sahara Desert, with vintage paintings of the Sahara desert, replete with camels. The overall vibe of the Sahara poker room matches the casino itself like a glove. It is smoky, old school, and vintage, on many levels. Despite the overall lack of cleanliness of the poker room (and the casino itself), it still retains quite a bit of character, and the tournament has a dedicated following that makes the room worth a visit at least once. Competition Rating: 5 The competition/quality of play at the Sahara Poker Room is quite poor. When the No Limit cash game gets going (usually toward the beginning of the 7PM tournament), the action is usually quite loose. The players that play at the Sahara are often older locals (in the 2/4 game) and younger tournament wannabes that play tournament style on a 1/2 NL game, which often makes the game quite juicy and soft. The tournament brings together one of the softest tournament fields in Las Vegas. Due to its popularity, the tournament often is a mixed bag of daily regulars (none of which are consistent winners), and a rotating group of daily tourists that feed the bottom line of the tournament. The general player pool is quite soft on all levels at the Sahara, and is definitely a strong point of the card room. As of August 2009, the main cash game in the room is 2/4LHE, usually spreading on a single table. This game spreads all day and night, most of the time. Around 8PM, a 1/2 NLHE game starts that has a $500 maximum buy in. When this game is going, it is one of the best NLHE games in town, but unfortunately, it is not a daily occurrence. Dealer Rating: 3 The dealers at the Sahara poker room are a mixture of old school (that have been there quite a long time), break-ins (new dealers dealing at a property for the first time), and average card slingers. Though a few stand out as being better then the Vegas norm, the overall dealer quality of the Sahara is quite low, and well below par of most Vegas card rooms. The mechanical skills of the dealers are often passable, but little things that are unheard of in better rooms are commonplace here (drinking water while in the box, chatting excessively, holding the deck upside down, improper shuffles, game control, etc). Overall, the Sahara has a reputation has having low quality dealers, and unfortunately, that reputation is true, for the most part. There are some dealers (specifically a few part timers) that are from the new school of dealer training, and are quite good, but unfortunately, they are in the minority. As of August 2009, the dealers at Sahara have improved. The games were better controlled, the mechanical skills were apparent, and a general friendly demeanor was noticed by nearly all staff members. The staff has excelled from below average to an average score of 3/5. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service of the Sahara poker room is actually quite quick the majority of the time, though the cocktail waitresses are quite a mixed bag of newer younger females and older mature women. No premium or energy drinks are available, but being the Sahara, you wouldn’t even think of asking for anything above beer and basic well drinks. Management Rating: 2 Much like the dealers, the management of the Sahara poker room is a mixture of old school, and young break-ins. Their tournament management is often subpar with regards to decisions, and table balancing, though their general customer friendliness is average within the industry. Some shift managers come off as a bit gruff and stern whereas others come off as friendly, but not necessarily knowledgeable about all things poker. Because the tournaments are such an important part of the poker room, one would think that the tournament management would be top notch, but it is often lacking, with flaws such as late starts, incorrect decisions, and improper dealer management/training being commonplace. Comps Rating: 3 The Sahara poker room offers a few different comps. Aside from the complimentary cold cut sandwiches offered to the 7PM tournament players, they offer a $4 food comp that can be used at any Sahara restaurant. The food comp is available by asking; so long as you are playing in a cash game (tournament play does not qualify for the food comp). Also, they do offer a poker room rate, which one can qualify for through tournament play. The room also offers a Bad beat jackpot, which is created by taking $1 per hand of cash game play.
