Weekend Wait-Time: Weekdays: < 15 minutes Weekends 5 minutes - 30 minutes Smoking Allowed: No Poker Room Rate: No Editor's Review - Imperial Palace Poker Room Total Rating: 3.60 Room Quality Rating: 2 The Imperial Palace poker room is located directly adjacent to the main casino thoroughfare, alongside the blackjack pit and directly next to a casino bar. The “room” is enclosed on two sides via half walls covered in WSOP logos. The back wall serves as the informational area, with several posters advertising their promotions, their high hand jackpot payouts, and their world famous low limit mixed game that spreads on Sunday nights. There is a cashier desk located in the back corner of the room, and the room is fully serviced by the Bravo Genesis gaming system which tracks all lists electronically and enables players to sign up for games using their Total Rewards players’ card through the front podium. The room is very practical, and offers 3 large plasma flat screen televisions, showing sporting events, with a 4th screen displaying the games spread and waitlists. Aesthetically, the room seems better apportioned then one might expect from an older property. The tables are recently re-felted, the televisions are fairly new, there are autoshufflers installed in 3 of their 6 tables, and all 6 tables are equipped with the Genesis Bravo comp tracking system. This coupled with the two management podiums (one for list management and greeting and the other for cashier and room management), make the IP poker room quite surprisingly one of the most technologically advanced small rooms on the Strip. The furnishings and color palate of the room itself match the property, though the felts do add a vibrancy that seems a little out of place considering the general Asian 1970s theme that the casino exudes. The tables are extremely large (largest that this reviewer has ever seen) and the chairs, though not adjustable or swivel, offer wide seats and comfortable padding. The smoked glass back wall is part and parcel to the rest of the south side of the casino (after all, this room is really just a retrofitted alcove off the main floor), and the red awning and bar chairs that sit alongside the east side of the room are there solely because of the casino bar that aligns the room. As mentioned previously, this room is practical, and serves its purpose quite well. Overall, the poker room at Imperial Palace is a surprisingly comfortable and vibrant little room, with modern technology, spaced out tables, and a tourist friendly setting and staff that welcomes all to come and play. Competition Rating: 5 The players at the Imperial Palace poker room are among the worst in the city. Catering almost exclusively to tourists and value minded travelers, the games are often extremely soft with few to any players knowing proper game theory. The IP spreads 2/4LHE and 1/2NLHE regularly (with a mixed game on Sunday nights). The 2/4 and NLHE games are often filled with people who have never played poker before and/or are there to drink as much as possible and have a good time. Loose players with multiple reload funds often fill the seats (especially at night), and can be expected to take any solid player for a ride. This room is rather quiet during the day (with the exception of the 8-11AM morning shift which is populated by local promotion chasers playing 2/4 trying to get their Aces and Kings cracked for a bonus payout of $100 and $50 respectively). The room comes alive with loose partying tourists late at night, when it is not uncommon to see all 6 tables running and red chips flying. With the conversion of the Excalibur poker room to an all electronic venue, the Imperial Palace seems to be one of the best places for brand new players to get acclimated to the games and the rules. The high hand payouts are very high, and the staff is very accustomed to new players. This makes the games wonderful for experienced players and new players alike (for different reasons, obviously). Overall, the competition level of the Imperial Palace poker room is certainly one of the strongest selling points of the room. The loose players coupled with the quick cocktail service translate into a loud and fun atmosphere for all who play there. Dealer Rating: 4 The dealing staff at Imperial Palace has come a very long way in the past two years. With the addition of a 10 game mixed game to their weekly games spread repertoire, the dealing staff has improved by leaps and bounds in game control and comprehension. The mechanical skill is solid in most of their staff, though some dealers tend to be a little slower than necessary. The shifts tend to vary greatly, with different shifts excelling in different ways from other shifts. The IP is well known within the industry as being a break-in house, welcoming and training dealers that are fresh out of dealing school. Fortunately, many of the new dealers that the IP has hired in the past few years have come from some very good schools, and are well acclimated to modern dealing protocol. Though there are some dealers that still struggle with certain finer intricacies of the game, most do their job well, and control their games with a friendly professionalism that is necessary when dealing with such an eclectic clientele. Cocktail Rating: 4 The Imperial Palace cocktail servers are known as being all quite young, attractive, and competent. The cocktail servers at IP are non-union, and it shows. Frozen drinks are served as are basic top shelf liquors. Red Bull is served, though not in the can, and the waitresses service the room very quickly most of the time. In a room like Imperial Palace, cocktail service is extremely important, as many of the customers playing are there to have a good time and drink, and not necessarily play a serious game of poker. Fortunately, this ideal is embraced by the staff, and the cocktail service lives up to the need of the patrons the vast majority of the time with regards to speed, attitude and efficiency. Management Rating: 5 The management of the Imperial Palace poker room significantly exceeds expectation. The decision makers have invested significant funding in adding the Genesis Bravo player tracking system in all tables, as well as a fully electronic list tracking system, with self service kiosk. The room also offers autoshufflers in 3 of their six tables (we would like to see all 6 tables offer this amenity). In addition to the technological aspects of the room, the people running the room are all thoroughly knowledgeable in poker protocol and procedures, and are extremely welcoming to new players and new ideas. Being that the Imperial Palace poker room caters itself to tourists and casual players, the management staff is very accustomed to handling very inexperienced poker players, intoxicated players, and even know-it-all types (the latter being the mixed game crowd). At least one of the IP Supervisors has over 30 years of poker experience, and the upper management recognizes and believes in poker, which is evident by its participation on the AVP forums, and in its support of new games such as the mixed game on Sunday nights. In Spring 2008 the Imperial Palace was presented with a low limit mixed game that encompasses 5-6 regular players who were looking for a permanent venue. IP welcomed the group with open arms, printed flyers and a wall poster to advertise the game, gave a special discounted rake, and reserved a table for the group on Sunday nights. As of January 2009, the game is still regularly spread every Sunday night, often on 2 tables. In addition to the above, the management has decided to continue to offer $2 per hour comps on the Harrah’s Total Rewards Card. This is the most generous comps given to poker players in all of Las Vegas. It is evident that the IP sincerely appreciates and takes care of its players, both regulars and tourists alike. Comps Rating: 5 The Imperial Palace poker room offers players the most generous hourly comps in the city. All players earn $2 per hour of play, which goes directly onto the Harrah's Total Rewards card. These comps can be used at any Harrahs property for food and beverage as well as in the gift shops. Because the comp goes directly to the players’ card, there is no paper required to redeem. The earned comps are tacked on the cards at the table, and can be applied to the hotel bill as well. The IP offers $100 for Aces cracked and $50 for Kings cracked in the morning hours, and fresh made cookies are brought out for players on every shift. In addition to the above, High Hand Jackpots are offered, and pay out at higher amounts then most competitors. All Quads pay $75, and Straight Flushes and Royals are uncapped progressive and start at $250 for the former and $500 for the latter. Though they do not offer a poker room rate, the dollars earned per hour easily make this room the most generous room in the city for poker player comps. Total Reward comps dollars can be redeemed at any Harrah’s property and do not require a paper comp. Simply swipe the card at any food or retail outlet to redeem your comps dollars. This is easily the best joint property loyalty program for poker players offered in Las Vegas.
