Editor's Review - Bill's Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.50

Room Quality Rating: 2
The Bill’s poker room is an area by the Strip sidewalk entrance. It includes two tables, with red velvet ropes sectioning off the poker area. Though this is not a formal poker room, the two table area actually serves the Bills casino quite well. Though we would prefer to see the poker room have an actual room, perhaps adjacent to the pit, given the extremely small size of the property and the casino itself, this poker room serves its purpose, and compliments the property nicely. The room closes late at night when the last game breaks (this usually only happens when the nightclub is dark), and reopens at 11AM. If the game does not break, the room stays open. They will not break a live game to close the room.

The tables are recycled WSOP tables from what appears to be the 2007 year. The tables are not equipped with the Bravo system (i.e. there is no player card tracking in the tables themselves) but with the size of the poker room, this type of system is really not necessary. The chairs are standard poker room chairs, not adjustable or swivel. Though it is a non-smoking room, one simply has to stand up and step behind the velvet ropes to light up. The steps to the Strip sidewalk are only about three feet from the poker room, thus the location is quite convenient.

The frills of the Bills poker room are rather slim. They do not have any televisions in the room for sports watching nor do they offer tableside foodservice. There are no real amenities offered to the player’s other then complimentary cocktails, and a very generous comps policy ($2 per hour that can be used in any Bill’s restaurant or gift shop, and can be applied to the hotel room bill).

Overall, the room quality is low, but one has a fairly low expectation when it comes to the poker room at Bills considering the property itself is known as being a value property with a phenomenal center Strip location. Much like Imperial Palace, Bill’s poker room is designed with its specific clientele in mind: recreational tourist players looking for a low limit simple game of poker.

Competition Rating: 5
Bill’s poker room players are almost all casual tourist players most of the time. Due to the low buy in of the NL game, the players that decide to play at Bills as opposed to walking over to Flamingo are ones that desire to play in a very low buy in NL game and play quite loosely. The NL game has a single $1 blind and an extremely low $20 min buy in (this is the lowest min buy in on the Strip).

Though the room does have a local following during the 11AM to 2PM timeframe, when the room offers an Aces and Kings cracked promotion, the vast majority of the time the room has casual tourist players who are there to drink, have a good time, and play cards/gamble (usually in that order). Players buying in for the $200 are in the minority in this game, and when the game is 2-6 spread limit (significantly less common then than the NL game) the action is still quite loose and easy to beat for a smart educated poker player.

Dealer Rating: 4
The Bill’s poker room is managed and staffed by the Imperial Palace poker team. The dealers from the IP are all quite fluid in their dealing mechanics and control the games well. Often, the Bill’s games are quite tough to control due to the drinking and noise factor, but all dealers seem to maintain solid game control and shuffle accurately and correctly follow poker room dealing protocol.

The personalities of the Bill’s poker room dealing staff are friendly, receptive to courtesy, and welcoming to new players. It seems that all dealers are quite experienced with the clientele that Bill’s has, and adapt accordingly. The patience factor of the dealers is quite high. Considering that many, if not most, of the players that sit down in the Bill’s poker room are new to live poker, and are not necessarily knowledgeable in poker room procedures or game etiquette.

Cocktail Rating: 3
The cocktail staff of Bill’s delivers drinks quickly, and most standard shelf cocktails are available. Considering the property, it is no surprise that premium/top shelf drinks are not available, nor is Red Bull served in the can.

The waitresses are generally attractive and young, and quite friendly to the players. The service bar is only steps away from the poker room, thus enabling the girls to get the drinks to the table in a very quick manner.

Management Rating: 5
The management of the Bill’s poker room is quite good, considering the location. List tracking is done on paper and pen (with only a 2 table room, an electronic list system is really unnecessary), and if a player decides to leave the poker area while waiting, the floor staff will call the player on their cell phone to notify them of their seat opening up.

The management themselves are experienced in poker, and show genuine concern for the success of the poker room and the happiness of the players. Frank and Jake from Imperial Palace oversee the poker room at Bill’s, and bring to the table a wealth of experience and ideas. Given what they have to work with, this reviewer is quite impressed with the effort put in to make the small Bill’s poker room a convenient, nice, and comfortable place to play cards.

Comps Rating: 5
The Bill’s Poker Room offers a generous $2 per hour comps on the Bill’s Player’s Card. Though the property is owned by Harrahs, Bill’s still operates as a separate entity, and thus its comps are only good within the Bill’s casino. However, the earned comps can be used toward any food outlet within Bill’s, as well as in the gift shop, and can be applied to your Bill’s Hotel room bill. Also, the comps go directly to the card, so there is no need to get a paper comp from the poker room to redeem your earned comp dollars.

From what this reviewer has heard, there is a plan to eventually convert Bill’s to the Total Rewards (Harrah’s) system which will enable earned poker room comps to be used at any Harrahs property, but as of this writing, this is currently not the case.

Bill’s takes a jackpot drop of $1 when the pot reaches $10. The promotions that Bill’s offers include a flat $50 paid to quads (using a pocket pair), $250 for all straight flushes, and $500 for Royal Flushes. Both hole cards must play, there must be $10 in the pot, and at least 4 players must be dealt in. Bill’s also offers an Aces/Kings cracked promotion from 11AM to 2PM. $50 is paid to the player who has his pocket Kings cracked, and $100 is paid to players who have their pocket Aces cracked.
