Editor's Review - Suncoast Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.20

Room Quality Rating: 3
Welcome to the Suncoast Poker Room in Northwest Las Vegas! Upon entering the Suncoast Casino, the Poker Room is quite easy to locate. It sits adjacent to the movie theatres on the West end of the building and is near the parking garage. The front of the Suncoast Poker Room is wide open from one side to the other and passerby can easily see every poker game that is running.

The Suncoast Poker Room is decorated with an off-white color design on the walls, a floral print type of pattern for the carpet, and accessorized with 12 beautiful plasma TVs surrounding the poker room. There are 12 brand new Texas Holdem tables located inside the Suncoast Poker Room. All tables seat 10 players and have betting lines. The tables are also equipped with auto shufflers. The chairs are your average type of poker chair you can find in most any of the smaller poker rooms in Las Vegas with one major difference. The chairs all have wheels on them for ease of moment for the players. The comfort is about average as well. Located in the back of the room are racks holding magazines and cushions for the convenience of the poker players. I’m sorry folks, food is not available at the tables here.

Because there are movie theatres next door, quite a few children hang around the front of the Suncoast Poker Room. There are also slot machines very close to the front of the Poker Room. The slot machines aren’t loud whatsoever, so the noise is not a problem.
Overall the Suncoast Poker Room is a very comfortable and spacious poker room. The only problem it’s too spacious. There is a ton of room in the Suncoast Poker Room, but it feels more like a warehouse than a poker room. There is nothing intimate about the environment here.

Competition Rating: 4
The players that frequent the Suncoast Poker Room are primarily local players.. There are some tourists staying in the hotel and they do check out the poker room from time to time. It is worth repeating; just because players are local does not mean they are good players. Most of them are the check and call type. They rarely bet unless they have the nuts or an extremely strong hand. A little bit of loose aggressive style of play at the limit games will have them shaking their heads and paying you off every chance they get.

Most of the players were middle aged and very few were younger than 40 years of age. Seems the players are just out to have a good time and socialize. There were a few rocks that knew what they were doing and it’s very easy to figure out their play and adjust to them.

Dealer Rating: 4
The managers at the Suncoast Poker Room have hired some better than average dealers with great personalities. All the dealers that dealt to me on my most recent trip to the Suncoast Poker Room were pleasant and moved them game along quite well. I was not witness to any mistakes made by any of the dealers here.

Some of the less experienced dealers were a little hesitant when reading more than two player hands when multiple hands were turned up at the same time. But they were very receptive to the assistance provided by the players involved in the showdowns.

My major irritation with the Suncoast poker room dealers is the amount of comments dealers here made about hands in play and pot sizes. I heard many statements such as, “you sure you want to check?” and “wow, nice pot for you buddy” – I understand this is a low limit local poker room in Las Vegas, so a little bit of this can be overlooked. But the comments occurred more than once in awhile. Still, I understand the dealers are just trying to be friendly with the players, and that goes a long way in my book.

Cocktail Rating: 4
COCKTAILS!!! I love the cocktail servers that work in the Suncoast Casino Poker Room. Most of the servers are extremely beautiful and have quite revealing outfits, ala the Orleans and South Coast casinos. The speed of the service is very good and the women are extremely friendly. They even remembered what I was drinking after only one drink!

And guess what! Red Bull and Diet Red Bull in a can are available here. The only downside to the cocktail service at the Suncoast Poker Room is that top shelf booze are not available and lots of the “middle” shelf stuff isn’t available either. I couldn’t even get Crown Royal. It was replaced with cheap house substitute and I could definitely taste the difference.

Management Rating: 3
Upon entering the Suncoat Poker Room, I approached the manager’s podium and was not greeted whatsoever. The manager called over a dealer from across the room to “handle this customer for me” without even saying a word to me. The dealer who checked me in was extremely professional, but I was put off that the manager was talking to a cocktail waitress instead of taking care of his customer.

The list system here is written on paper like a lot of the smaller rooms. After a little while of play, I went to the podium with a few questions for the manager about comps, jackpots, and game selection. Answers were short and to the point, but I was offered a player’s card and he printed one up right away for me. The room seemed managed well, decisions were made properly, the players knew what was going on, and the dealers knew where to be and when.

Comps Rating: 2
The Suncoast Poker Room players club offers $1.25/hour for the first four hours of play and $0.50/hour for the next four hours of play for a total of $7/day max in comps that can be used in any of the restaurants in the casino. The low cap on the max makes this comp program one of the lesser programs in terms of value in Las Vegas.

The Suncoast Poker Room also offers High Hand Jackpots for all four-of-a kind or better hands in Texas Holdem. This isn’t really a comp since there is a separate rake taken of 5% to a max of $1.00 for the drop. The jackpots start at $50 and are progressive each day the jackpots aren’t hit. The straight and royal flushes start at $100 and are also progressive. The rules for high hands may be found in the Suncoast Poker Room. Both hole cards must be used in the qualifying hand and you must have a pocket pair for four-of-a kind.
