Editor's Review - Mandalay Bay Poker Room Total Rating: 3.55 Room Quality Rating: 4 **Last Updated: 11/20/09** The Mandalay Bay poker room has been continuously operating since the resorts opening in 1999, and offers 10 tables of No Limit and Limit Texas Hold’em action. Mandalay Bay is aesthetically one of the nicest card rooms on the South Side of the Las Vegas Strip. Connected by tram to Excalibur and Luxor, Mandalay Bay stands out from the other two as being an aesthetically beautiful property (and poker room, specifically), with a solid location, professional furnishings, and fairly modern technology. Though the overall room quality is fairly high, the room suffers greatly from archaic and unnecessary rules and procedures that bring down the room as a whole. This will be addressed in the Management section of the review and will not affect the room quality rating. The room is laid out quite nicely, with a large brush desk front and forward by the entryway, a secondary cashier desk toward the rear of the room, and two half walls enclosing the space. The room is adorned with foliage and decent television placement throughout the room. The lists are managed electronically, though the tables lack the Genesis Bravo tableside units, as the room does not use the MGM Mirage Players’ card to track comps. The tables and chairs are below average for the industry, mainly due to their obvious age. Though the tables have autoshufflers installed, the tables also come with a wooden racetrack, which shows significant signs of wear, as well as chairs that are quite dated and worn (non-swivel adjustable height). Side tables are available for food and drink storage, and the table rail includes cup holders. Located directly adjacent to the Race and Sports Book, the Mandalay Bay poker room is positioned nicely along the secondary main thoroughfare of the casino. The main table games pit as well as self parking is located quite a ways away from the room, but with the significant amount of walk by traffic that this room gets from Mandalay’s The Hotel extension, this poker room is well positioned within the resort. The restrooms are located across the sports book, which is a manageable distance. Steps away from the poker room are both a small delicatessen and a fairly quiet casino bar/lounge. Mandalay is one of the few rooms where the room quality is adversely affected by the rake. Mandalay chooses to rake in $.50 increments, which means that there are silver half dollars in play at the table. Nearly all other rooms in Las Vegas have done away with such nickel and dime raking, as it does little more than adversely affect dealer tips and bring down the aura of class that the room could exemplify. Essentially, the Mandalay Resort could operate a truly world class card room, but instead it chooses to limit itself to being a third tier room due to its insistence on outdated rules and protocol, cheapening itself through the use of half dollars for rake, and employees that have been explicitly trained to treat players like small children learning Go Fish for the first time. Overall, the room quality at Mandalay Bay is above average, though marred by its own self deprecating rules, procedures, and protocol. The poker room treats itself like it is a low quality card room, which does not need to be the case. It is as if the management of the room does not WANT the room to be taken seriously in the Las Vegas poker market or escalated to a truly world class level. Despite the high aesthetical appeal of the room, the Mandalay Bay poker room just barely earns a 4/5 ranking for overall room quality, due to the many negatives that beautiful aesthetics simply cannot cover up. Competition Rating: 4 The poker room at Mandalay Bay is known as offering some of the softest low limit NL action in all of Las Vegas. Comparable to Bally’s, the games as a whole here are often action oriented, loose, and wild. The adjoined Mandalay Bay Convention center coupled with the massive hotel and The Hotel towers, not to mention the lack of any truly high quality card rooms in the immediate area provides a consistent influx of tourists, conventioneers, and hotel guests to fill the seats of the card room every day and night. Though the action is comparable to Bally’s, the games at Mandalay have a slight advantage due to the high number of wealthier customers and night clubbers. On an average night, the room will have 2 tables of 3/6LHE and 4-5 tables of 1/2NLHE ($100-$300 buy in). The room also spreads 2/4NLHE, with a min of $200 and a max of $600. The 2/4NLHE game is not as consistent as it once was, but still spreads usually on the weekends. These games are all often quite soft and filled with a solid mixture of hotel guests/convention attendees and regulars. As Mandalay has been around for 10 straight years as of this writing, the poker room has had time to build a significant local player base that more than compliments the continuous tourist turnover. Overall, the competition level of the Mandalay Bay poker room is truly a selling point of the room. The attached convention center and 4 Star hotel provides an ample number of recreational and casual players that enjoy chasing the high hand jackpots and playing in horribly structured high juice tournaments. Dealer Rating: 3 The Mandalay Bay poker dealers are above average when it comes to dealing mechanics and competence but suffer in customer service/friendliness due to their insistence of reiterating all house rules and jackpot procedures every time they join the table and/or if a new players joins the game. If you are playing a long session, you could conceivably hear the same speech over 20 times in one day. It is frustrating to say the least, and is only an issue at the Bay. All card rooms have rules and most have jackpots, but none insist on repeating the entire breakdown of antiquated house rules and jackpot qualifiers every time the table changes slightly. It is simply repeated ad nauseum by many dealers, which taints them as whole. The majority of the dealers at Mandalay Bay are older, experienced dealers who maintain solid game control and enforce all unnecessary rules as best they can. Most also seem quite annoyed that they are forced to inflict their obviously juvenile rules on their customers (and hear their customers complain about it) on a daily basis. Also, the fact that Mandalay chooses to rake in half dollars lends itself to frustrated dealers who often can be heard complaining quietly about how all they received for a particular down was a small handful of silver. The competence of the staff is quite remarkable with game control being a particular strength amongst most dealers. Though their personalities are often marred by the enforcement of the rules, the dealing staff at Mandalay are average within the industry. If the management were to re-evaluate the unnecessary rules that arte forced upon the dealers to enforce, the dealer rating could essentially rise to the 5/5 range, as the annoyed reiteration of said rules (often with pure scornful disdain) is the largest detriment to the score overall. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service at Mandalay Bay is quite average within the industry. Service is neither quick nor slow, and the all the basic and basic premiums are available (though Red Bull is not served). The cocktail waitresses at Mandalay Bay are quite attractive, and most serve with a smile, though some seem to go out of their way not to. When the room is full, service can slow to about once an hour, despite constant complaints from the players. During the day and lighter evenings, the service is perfectly on par with about what you would expect from a mid-tier room. The drink quality is nowhere near the top end (Venetian, Wynn) but well above the bottom end (Caesars, MGM Grand). Overall, the cocktail service at Mandalay is simply average, on nearly all levels, with regards to drink quality and selection, speed, and attitudes/attractiveness of the wait staff. Management Rating: 3 Mandalay Bay is managed much more strictly than any other poker room in Las Vegas. The poker room manager, Kay White, is very meticulous when it comes to rules and game protection, and has thusly taken the rules enforcement to a new level. This reviewer has played in over 60 card rooms in the Las Vegas area, and NONE even come close to mirroring the strictness, protocol, and rules that are enforced at Mandalay Bay. Players at Mandalay Bay are often subjexted to continuous reiteration of rules by the dealers, which often comes off as overbearing. Ms. White has put several rules in place in order to maintain a clean and orginized cardroom, but un doing so, the room has gotten an overly strict reputation. Here are some of the more unique rules that Mandalay Bay enforces: 1. Reading/writing at the table is not allowed. 2. Buying the button is not permitted to make up blinds. 3. If the autoshuffler jams, dealers are NOT permitted to manually unjam it. They must call a floor to unjam it. According to management, it violates NGCB and game integrity to have the dealer handle two decks at the same time, so this rule is strictly enforced. 4. Rake is taken even if a flop is not seen, including the jackpot drop. 5. Rake is taken in $.50 increments, with half dollars in use at the table. This causes dealers to make a lot of noise slamming the coin on the rack ot brak open the pieces. This is extremely unprofessional and looks "cheap". 6. All action out of turn (verbal and otherwise) is binding. 10. Forward motion/chips that cross line constitute a bet (this has apparently been toned down a bit, but is still on the books). 11. Dealers cannot call out open seats (nor does the room use tableside seat tracking units). As the room’s loudspeaker has a very limited range and electronic pagers are not available (nor will the staff text you when your seat opens), players often lose their place on the list when they do not hear their name called (and names are often called quickly). The fact that a resort as high in overall quality and prestige as Mandalay Bay rakes its poker pots in SILVER FIFTY CENT PIECES is comical to say the least. This is a management decision that does nothing more than diminishes the poker room’s reputation and cheapens the whole Mandalay Bay poker room experience for its patrons. Overall, The floor management is above average and is often quite friendly and inviting, and are simply doing their jobs when it comes to enforcing rules that they have no say in. Ms. White runs a tight ship, and is a strng believer in game integrity and game protection. Ms. White has said that she wants to get Genesis Bravo installed in the tables for comp tracking, and is wanting to get the fifty cent pieces removed from the game. We hope that these things do occur soon. As of November 2009, things are changing for the better at Mandalay Bay. Players may use the cel phone at the table, when not in a hand. Players may chop the blinds when folded to. Additional changes need to be made to allow Mandalay Bay to compete on a high level, but we are glad to see these recent improvements to the venue. Comps Rating: 3 As of November 2009, Mandalay Bay awards players $1 per hour comps that can be used at specific food venues in the property. However, as they do not use the Genesis Bravo tableside comp tracking, all players must sign in and out at the desk using index cards that the room keeps on file. This is a horrendous system, and is trumped even by neighboring Excalibur that tracks players on a computer. The poker room manager has said many times that she wants Genesis Bravo installed tableside, but has thus far been unable to get the approval for it. This is a very old fashioned comp system that needs to be eradicated in order to compete in today’s poker market, especially for a mid-tier room. Mandalay drops a jackpot dollar when the pot reaches $10, so high hand jackpots as well as high hand of the day high value jackpots are awarded to players who hit certain high hands. Few to other promotions are run regularly, so it is uncertain as to how the remaining jackpot reserve is dispersed to the players. Overall, the comp system at Mandalay Bay is archaic and in need of a modern upgrade. Though the fairly standard $1 per hour is granted, the system that tracks it is time consuming and very old fashioned.
