Editor's Review - Fitzgeralds Poker Room

Total Rating: 2.95

Room Quality Rating: 2
The Fitzgeralds Poker Room isn’t really a room at all. There are no walls around this bad boy. In fact, the poker room is actually in the same upstairs area that used to house the high limit slot section. Although it is a poker “area” and not a real “room”, there is a nice 3” dark red wooden rail that runs along the front two sides of the Fitzgeralds Poker Room. A well lit sign that says POKER ROOM is arched from one side of the entrance to the other at the front right corner of the Fitzgeralds Poker Room. There is also a small side entrance that seemed to be used mostly by employees or people checking their keno tickets at the adjacent Keno Lounge. There is a balcony near the Fitzgeralds Poker Room for viewing of the Freemont Street Experience at the front of the casino. The balcony is a great place to unwind after that two-outer bad beat.

The Fitzgeralds Poker Room is quite small. It houses six Texas Holdem tables, a manager’s podium, and a small table in the back for snacks/water/coffee for the players is available. There is no waiting area or lounge to relax in while on the list for your game of choice. The carpet is quite ugly and is the same carpeting used for many years throughout the 2nd floor of the Fitzgeralds casino. Three medium sized plasma TVs hang on the side wall of the Fitzgeralds Poker Room. These TVs are not easily visible unless you are facing them directly. Almost half the seats in the Fitzgeralds Poker Room do not have a view of these plasma TVs. There is a table against the same wall that the TVs hang on with snacks, water, and coffee available for free to the players.

The Fitzgeralds Poker Room has brand new oversized Texas Holdem tables. These are 10 handed tables with cup holders built into a raised and cushioned rail. The tables themselves are quite big in size. The Fitzgeralds Poker dealers have trouble reaching the cards and chips on these tables. The players have plenty of elbow room when playing 10-handed. The poker tables are dressed in a blue colored speed cloth that makes it easy to pitch cards and slide chips.

The poker chairs at the Fitzgeralds are of average quality, and are not unlike the chairs that about 75% of poker rooms in Las Vegas use nowadays. They are black, and average in comfort and support. There are no wheels on the chairs to make sliding them on the old carpet an easier task. The Fitzgeralds Poker Room house policies, jackpot amounts, and jackpot rules are posted in various areas of the poker room. The manager’s podium in the back of the room has the waiting list, player log book, and any tournament information that is available.

There are some major drawbacks to the Fitzgeralds Poker Room, but the biggest drawback is the location. The Fitzgeralds Poker Room is located on the 2nd floor of the casino, and therefore does not benefit from walk-by traffic, which is the main source of new action for many of the poker rooms in Las Vegas. Sure, there is some walk-by traffic from guests visiting the two restaurants or the showroom on this floor, as well as the adjacent keno lounge, but this is not a high-traffic area by casino standards.

The next big drawback is the age of the building. The Fitzgeralds casino is quite old and getting into and out of it can be quite the hassle. The restrooms are located near the escalators, which means getting to them requires a bit of a walk through a very noisy slot section. The noise level is absurd from the slots as they are located two feet from the rail of the Fitzgeralds Poker Room.

Finally, there are no walls around the poker room and therefore any smoke from nearby will work its way inside. This can be bothersome if you are looking for a smoke free environment.

A few notes about finding the Fitzgeralds poker room. When traveling to the Fitzgeralds for some poker action, do not park in the Fitzgeralds’ parking garage. Instead, park next door at the Freemont Street Experience and walk in the Freemont Street side of the casino as this is the closest entrance with access to the poker room. Valet Parking is also a decent alternative as the parking garage at the Fitzgeralds is just terrible. Once you enter the building, make your way to the main cashier’s cage, and next to that you’ll find an escalator. There are no signs for the Fitzgeralds Poker Room other than the sign at the bottom of the escalator, but there are signs for the Sports Book/2nd Floor located throughout the casino. Follow those signs to find the escalator. Go up the escalator, turn left and walk past the Sports Book and the Keno Lounge, through a small slot area, and then you’ll be at the Fitzgeralds poker room.

Competition Rating: 5
The players at the Fitzgeralds Poker Room are there just to have a good time and play some Las Vegas Poker. The vibe at Fitzgeralds is much more upbeat than the vibe you will find at most other downtown poker rooms. Almost all of the players had an alcoholic drink of some kind in front of them and were gambling it up. This is just what you would expect from players at a low limit poker room.

There were lots of loose aggressive players that would bet and raise with just about any two cards and also a few players that would call raises and re-raises with the same holdings. You will most likely find players of all ages and all experience levels in the Fitzgeralds Poker Room.

Downtown Las Vegas has a tendency to attract a wide variety of characters. Having the only bad beat jackpot in Downtown Las Vegas will definitely attract some crazies, including more loose passive locals and wild tourists hoping to hit it big with one of their mediocre holdings. These low limit games could be quite profitable but be prepared for the bad beats.

Dealer Rating: 2
The Fitzgeralds Poker Room manager had less than two weeks to get dealers hired in time for the Grand Opening. Management had to train some of the pit dealers in poker dealing and procedures to be sure to have enough dealers on staff for the Poker Room at the Fitzgeralds. There are a few dealers working part time here that came from other casinos with poker dealing experience. Those dealers are actively working with and helping the poker room manager in training the break-in dealers.

While in the box, the dealers are quiet, but there were some mistakes with exposed cards, rake, and side pots. These are easily fixed and with more dealing time, these dealers are sure to get better since most of them already have table games dealing experience. The Fitzgeralds poker dealers welcomed new players to the room if they were on breaks or helping out at the counter, as well as when a new player would join a poker game in progress.

Cocktail Rating: 2
The cocktail service at the Fitzgeralds poker room leaves a lot to be desired. The Fitzgeralds serves a very limited variety of alcohol types in the casino. Sorry - no Grey Goose vodka here. You won’t find any energy drinks like Red Bull in this poker room either. Many of the servers look like they are about to reach the expiration date for serving cocktails in Las Vegas. The mixed drinks were of sub-par quality and poorly mixed. Order a Crown and 7-Up, you will get a mostly clear class of 7-Up with maybe a slight splash of Crown Royal in it. These drinks are weak. The only positive about the cocktail service at the Fitzgeralds Poker Room is the cocktail waitresses are quite pleasant and the service quickies reasonably fast.

Management Rating: 4
The manager on duty at the Fitzgeralds Poker Room on Grand Opening day was one of the best managers I’ve dealt with in Las Vegas. This gentleman informed me that he was in fact the Poker Room Manager and he has worked at the Tuscany Casino Poker Room just off the Las Vegas Strip on East Flamingo. He answered every question I had with perfection and professionalism. Upon entering the room, I was greeted and was offered a game to play in that had seats available. The Fitzgeralds Poker Room manager offered to take my ID and send someone to have a casino player’s card made for me so that my hours could be tracked for comps. The only downside is the paper list management system, but for a poker room this small, a computer list management system really is not necessary.

Comps Rating: 4
The Fitzgeralds Poker Room has all sorts of jackpot promotions, discounted room rates, and free parking vouchers. The Poker Room at the Fitzgeralds is the only poker room in Downtown Las Vegas to offer a bad beat jackpot. This jackpot starts at $5000 and will increase over time. Also, the Fitzgeralds Poker Room offers high hand jackpots starting with quads or better. The jackpot amounts range from $50 to $599, and increase with hand strength from quad deuces all the way to a royal flush. Jackpots for deuces are worth $50 and Royal Flushes being worth $599. A separate jackpot rake is taken on all Texas Holdem games to fund all the jackpots. The rake is 100% refunded to the jackpots, therefore the house makes no money off of this extra drop.

The Fitzgeralds Poker Room offers free parking in the casino parking garage. If you’ve never visited Freemont Street, you will be surprised to learn that parking is not free unless you have it validated, comped, or are a hotel guest with a room key. Most validation is only good for the first few hours of your visit to the casino. The Fitzgeralds Poker Room will pick up the charge for your entire stay. You must see the Manager on duty to have the parking comped. The Fitzgeralds Poker Room also offers a discounted hotel room rate of $49 with four hours of live play each day required for the rate for the duration of your stay. Hours may not be carried over from one day to the next, ie: three hours on Monday plus five hours on Tuesday to get a total of eight hours for a two-night stay. No hourly comp dollars are available at this moment in time. The average in Las Vegas is currently $1/hour of live play with no comp dollars for tournament play. Also, the Fitzgeralds Poker Room is offering free hats and T-shirts randomly for cash game players at this moment in time.

The Fitzgeralds Poker Room has some very nice comps going for it. This is a very nice alternative to playing at Binion’s, The Plaza, or the Golden Nugget. The Fitzgeralds Poker Room should provide some competition to the downtown alternatives with its Bad Beat Jackpot, High Hand Jackpots, and the upcoming Freeroll Tournament in September.
