Welcome to Texas, circa 1950. Texas Station is as close as you are going to get to the real thing while being in Las Vegas. The look at feel of the Texas Station poker room, along with the rest of the casino, has that older down home Texas country look and feel to it.
For starters, it was quite difficult to find the poker room at Texas Station. For poker players, it is more accommodating to park in the North garage, walk straight and take the first right when you come out of the elevator. The poker room is located off to the left side of the race/sports book with a high limit slot section located directly between the poker room and sports book. There are lots of slot machines located around the entrance to the poker room but they are not noticeable when you are inside the poker room.
The poker room at Texas Station has a low waist-high wall all the way around the front. Brick walls surround the interior of the poker room with dark brown wood to accentuate the surrounding areas. The ceiling is quite low, when compared to a lot of the new poker rooms in the Las Vegas area, but this makes for a well lit playing area with no shadows to be seen. Some black and white photographs decorate the side and back walls. This is a testament of the atmosphere you are about to immerse yourself in.
The Texas Station poker room is one of the cleanest off strip poker rooms that I have ever visited There are garbage cans located throughout the room. One thing that is immediately noticeable is the amount of ceiling fans located throughout the poker room. This makes for some comfortable poker play on those 115 degree Las Vegas summer days.
The tables are the same type of 10 handed poker tables that you’ll find in many of the poker rooms in Las Vegas. The player tracking system that is currently in use at MGM Grand and the T.I. is also present here where the player sitting down presents his comp card to the dealer. The dealer then swipes the card, presses a seat button, and the player is now tracked for the entire time he plays. This tracks your playing time for your comp dollars which is explained in the comps rating section below. There is a wooden race track around the edge of the tables for players to put their chips on. Betting lines are printed on the felt and enforced properly. The tables are wrapped in a dark red felt, but are worn out cosmetically. There are lots of scratches and areas of the felt that the color is worn off completely. The cushioning under the felt is raised up about ½” from the wooden track. This allows for cards to sit at an angle and might be seen by other players around the table. Management had cup holders installed into the rail to prevent drinks from being spilled while placed on the table. The rail itself is of average comfort and is black in color.
The chairs in Texas Station poker room are of below average quality and comfort. These are the same chairs that you’ll find in a lot of the low limit poker rooms scattered throughout the city. Dark brown in color, cushions are stiff, and you can see that the chairs have been around the block a few times. Also, the chairs have no wheels on them. One thing that could be made available to the players is extra cushions. Players whom do not mind the mediocre chairs will feel right at home here.
Food is not available at the Texas Station poker room, but there are nice mini tables that patrons may acquire to put various items on. These mini tables are on wheels and have two drink holders installed along with two shelves. This is perfect for the players who head to the back of the poker room and pick up a fresh cup of coffee. That is right, fresh pots of coffee are offered to all players. It’s a self serve system however.
Overall, the Texas Station poker room room is comfortable with a down home feel to it. Players who are not concerned with the glitz and glamour of some of the newer poker rooms in Las Vegas will feel right at home in the Texas Station Poker Room.

After a little bit of play here, you will feel like you are at a Nextel customer service center. Can you say “calling stations”? Most of the players here are just playing in hopes of hitting the Station Casino Jumbo Bad Beat Jackpot which starts at $100,000. There are very few pre-flop raises, none of which are respected. While playing $4/8 HE, there were typically 7-9 players seeing the flop in an un-raised pot and 6-8 with a pre-flop raised pot. This is the definition of loose and passive play. The key to winning in this game is to value bet your strong hands and check/fold when you have nothing. Folding is right when most of the players cannot wait to get their chips into the pot. Have you seen the movie Rounders? These players “wear their tells like signs around their necks”. Many times, the players would verbally ask for specific cards or say something like “ I check my bottom two pair” and they were 100% telling the truth.
Players were very friendly with each other. You can tell who the locals and who the tourists are just by the way they converse with each other. Remember, just because they are locals, does not mean they have any idea how to play poker. This is socialization and relaxation time for almost everyone here. With that being said, about ¾ of the players here were middle-aged and older. Only one or two 20-somethings were playing at this time of the evening.
Playing poker with these folks can be quiet and fun at the same time. The play is very weak and can be quite profitable for a tight player. Play your cards well and do not bluff because you will get called.
Dealer Rating: 4
Texas Station employs some very competent poker dealers. All the dealers I experienced were average to above average in terms of speed and, importantly they were all very friendly. The dealers all ran their games efficiently by making sure players knew what was happening in each hand. The dealers did not talk too much while dealing but would engage in some friendly banter with some of the local and visiting players. The dealers make you feel like you belong here. It’s almost like you’re part of the family. I witnessed no misdeals, exposed cards, or any major errors while recently playing here. I wish more poker rooms in Las Vegas had dealers like those employed at the Texas Station poker room.
Cocktail Rating: 2
Service here can be summarized in one word. SLOW. From the time I sat in the game until the time I saw the first cocktail waitress, 45 minutes had passed. This is on a Tuesday evening when the entire casino is very slow. The cocktail waitress would quickly pass through the poker room and ask who wanted drinks. You had to be quick to catch her.
These girls need to smile. Both in the poker room and out on the casino floor, the servers looked like they could not wait to get out of work. They didn’t seem unhappy, just generally disinterested in being there. Most of the ladies here are probably in their 30s and 40s, and were mostly average in terms of attractiveness On a positive note, they did thank me for the tips in a pleasant manner.
Also, the mixed drink quality was absolutely terrible. The drinks had way too much ice and, for some reason, tasted like they were watered down. Did they even put alcohol in my double-O-seven? It sure tasted like orange juice and 7-Up without the Bacardi. Also – what’s up with the plastic cups? This is the first poker room that I have visited that serves mixed drinks in small plastic cups. It looks and feels very cheap. Texas Station management needs to work on this.
Management Rating: 5
Management at the Texas Station poker room is excellent. Management installed a computerized wait list system that is exactly the same as the system you will find at MGM Grand and the T.I. This is a welcome feature to any poker room. The wait list monitor is located just outside the front entrance to the Texas Station poker room. The best part about this system is a kiosk is set next to the entrance where you may swipe your comp card and put yourself on a list without having to ask the manager on duty to do this.
Comps Rating: 4
Station Casinos have a player’s card that can be used in any poker room on the network. They offer $1 per hour of live play that may be saved up and used at any restaurant in the casino. Also, there is an in house bad beat and a network wide bad beat jackpot. The in house jackpot starts at $10,000 and the network wide jackpot starts at $100,000. This brings in a lot of local jackpot chasers and makes for some very loose/passive games as they all want to see the river in hopes of getting a bad beat.
There is also a high hand moonlight tournament offered once a month. The player with the highest hand each day is recorded into a database and offered entry into this once a month tournament. This tournament is usually held the first week of the following month at midnight. Details were unavailable at the time of this writing.
The only thing that keeps Texas Station from receiving a 5 rating for comps is that they offer no poker room rate for the hotel. Overall a very good comp and reward system for players. The Bad Beat jackpot is the main reason people play at the Stations Casinos poker rooms, but this creates a fun and comfortable atmosphere.
