Editor's Review - Arizona Charlie's Poker Room

Total Rating: 2.40

Room Quality Rating: 2
**Last Updated: 07/10/09**

Arizona Charlie’s on Decatur operates a true relic of a poker room that is easily one of the most unique rooms in Vegas, due to a large number of factors (the largest of which is the allowance of smoking at the table). The overall room quality is low, no question, but when taking into account the whole property, this poker room matches its surroundings quite well. The tables were recently refelted and an autoshuffler has been added to their primary table. It appears that the mobile side tables have been repaired, and several ashtrays are available for your smoking pleasure. Being one of only 3 poker rooms left in the area that allow cigarette smoking at the table, this room has capitalized on the niche market of poker players that enjoy smoking at the table.

The location and layout of the room is appropriate and comfortable. Fairly recently relocated back to its original location, the poker room is adjacent to the sports book and the food court, in the southeast corner of the property. Valet and self parking are nearby, as is the pit and the service bar. The room layout is practical, with a brush podium in the back of the room and three tables with a good amount of space between the tables. The room is in an alcove with two permanent walls and a half wall on one side and allows for a good amount of walkby traffic.

The condition of the room is actually a little above average with regards to the furnishings and cleanliness. The room is brushed regularly by the up dealer (the room usually operates with a two man crew), and trash/ashtrays are maintained by the staff at regular intervals. The chairs are worn but not dilapidated and the tables were recently re-felted. Overall, though the overall casino is dark and rather worn down, the poker room is actually above average when compared to the casino that surrounds it, but below average when compared to any other local’s room out there (even when compared to other smoking rooms).

The room quality suffers further when taking into account the many things that the room lacks. Though the room has installed an autoshuffler, there is no electronic list tracking or tableside swipe units for comp tracking. Most importantly, the room operates without a poker room bank. The brush desk in the back of the room is unable to sell chips to the players, nor can players sell their chips back to the room. Players purchase chips from the dealer, and to cash out the players are sent to the main cashier cage near the gaming pit. Fortunately cash plays, so players are not inconvenienced as much as one would think by this oddly mom & pop philosophy of how to run a poker room.

Taking all aspects into account, Arizona Charlie’s Decatur is a unique place to play cards in Vegas, and this reviewer strongly recommends it to all, if for nothing else: the experience. It is quite an experience to play cards in this most unique mom and pop style room, and worthy of a visit at least once (maybe twice if you enjoy an occasional puff).

Competition Rating: 4
The games at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur are very soft, at all times. There are two or three regulars that play daily that are slightly above average players, but they are in the extreme minority. Most of the daily players at Arizona Charlie’s (especially at night) are local blue collar gamblers and retirees that are looking to drink and let off some steam after a long day.
During the dayshift, the game is typically loose passive with multi-way pots and lots of calling. The evening games are significantly more action oriented and often filled with people playing horrifically.

During the mornings and afternoons, the game is usually 4/8 with half kill and Overs buttons (players choosing to play with overs buttons are able to play no limit once non overs players fold their hands). Eventually, the game changes to a basic 1/2NL game with a $300 max. Cash plays, and cash flys around the table when the transition occurs. Often, the players that are more used to LHE will stay and play NLHE, which softens the game even more.

Overall, the competition at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur is certainly a selling point of the room. With the addition of cigarette smoking, players that are astute to poker tells should be able to spot quite a few physical tells that coincide with smokers at the table. This reviewer was able to hone quite a bit of physical player reading by studying the smoking debaucherous players that populate the Arizona Charlie’s poker room, due to the obvious (and exaggerated) nature of their tell broadcasting.

Dealer Rating: 3
The dealers at Arizona Charlie’s are above average, which is admittedly very surprising considering the property and its surrounding area. The lead dealer is quite old school, and has been dealing cards for over 20 years. He has some stories to tell, and runs a fairly tight ship in the room. The other dealers are a bit more green, though they fit the property and the room well. The dealers perform their essential job duties well, especially mechanically. The game control aspects are a bit more of a mixed bag, as this is a very casual game full of regulars, so there is quite a bit of leeway given to the players within certain regards.

The personalities of the dealers vie toward the gruff/grizzled side, but this bodes well considering the clientele. Snapy answers to questions and a general no frills attitude when it comes to customer service is the basic M.O. here, which is about as expected. Though the service aspect is a little lacking, their overall personalities are actually quite social and friendly, when you get to know them a bit. This is, once again, fairly standard in a room that is dominated by daily regulars.

Cocktail Rating: 2
The cocktail service at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur is about average within the local casino industry, but well below average when compared to better properties or even other local’s casinos like South Point or M. The waitresses are friendly and serve drinks with a smile, and usually will accommodate specialty and two drink requests. Though the bar is rather limited in their drink selection, one does not come to Arizona Charlie’s expecting a well appointed top shelf selection, in all honesty. Red Bull is sometimes served, depending on whether he bar has any or not, and most other drinks are available.

The speed of the servers is generally pretty quick, though very late at night can slow the turnaround time considerably. The service bar is located pretty close to the poker room, which assists in the quickness of the orders. When you come to Arizona Charlie’s, your expectations with regards to cocktailing are generally pretty low (based solely on the overall dilapidation of the property); however you will more than likely be pleasantly surprised. Overall, the cocktail service is much better than expected, but still average within the industry.

Management Rating: 2
The Arizona Charlie’s Decatur management, though rather fitting considering the property, is well below average within the local’s casino market. On the upper management level, the poker room is managed on the low end, with no real on hand manager budgeted for the room at any time from what this reviewer has witnessed. Also, senior management has opted to not provide the room with a cashier bank, instead opting to have the dealers sell chips to the customers out of the rack, then direct customers to the main cage to cash out. This shows an obvious lack of dedication and investment to poker. This is also bad for the games, as the 4/8LHE game is spread using $5 chips (since the dealer needs to conserve space in his well). This is not good for the game, as it makes the physical size of the pots appear smaller (basic poker management 101).

On the floor management side, the dealers run the room, with the up dealer acting as the floorman, and the other in the box, dealing the cards. Floor decisions are rendered casually and flippantly, and everything seems to run rather cohesively, despite the lack of any realy management figure in the room.

Overall, the management at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur is below average. Though the room was relocated to a haphazardly thrown together area off the pit for about a year, the room was returned to its current alcove once it was noted that high limit slots really do not need a dedicated area by the sports book. Despite the fact that it appears to be maintained well (with autoshufflers and clean felts), the lack of a real on hand management team coupled with the customer unfriendly need to send players to the main cashier to cash out translates into a sub par level room that is designed for very casual and low maintainence players only.

Comps Rating: 2
Arizona Charlie’s poker room offers very little in the way of comps. A single $5 food coupon (which can be used at the fast food court or the restaurants) is available upon request after playing for at least 4-5 hours. The poker room does not use the Arizona Charlie’s Player’s Card to track comps nor is the room equipped with the Genesis Bravo comp tracking system.

Local’s rooms depend on daily regulars to maintain the room and sustain business. Ordinarily, these rooms offer special hours based promotions and/or oversized jackpots to lure locals away from the Strip and into their venue. Unfortunately, Arizona Charlie’s opts to forgo these standard promotions and offer only standard progressive high hand jackpots. The room also occasionally offers other promotions like Aces cracked, but at the time of this writing, standard (and low paying) high hand jackpots are their only promotion.

Overall, the comps at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur are significantly below average, especially when compared to other local’s casinos (even when compared to the other room where smoking is allowed). The busiest smoking room in Las Vegas is Boulder Station, which is a busy and successful poker room that offers many local’s enticing comps and promotions. Arizona Charlie’s chooses to not mimic these good promotions at all and simply adhere to their standard operating procedure, which they do not appear to want to change any time soon. Though the room is a relic and recommended for all to visit at least once, there are better smoking rooms elsewhere that offer significantly better promotions for your gambling dollar.
