Editor's Review - Hilton Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.20

Room Quality Rating: 3
Hilton's new poker room is very average in terms of design. It occupies the same space that the old Hilton poker room occupied near the sports book, but is only 1/3 of its predecessors size in terms of tables. It is located in an actual room, separate from the casino floor, which I consider a plus.

The management was smart to set up two poker tables in front of the entrance to the poker room. When these poker tables are active, I expect the visible action to attract new players.

There are four flat-screen plasma televisions, one in each corner of the poker room, plus a flat-screen monitor at the entrance that displays the computerized wait-list information.

The poker tables look brand new. Each has an auto-shuffler, drink holders, and yellow commitment lines painted on the felt. Unfortunately, the commitment lines are particularly close to the edge of the table. This is a problem for players sitting anywhere but the corners. This layout gets particularly annoying when your chip stack grows. The dealers were not enforcing commitment line rules, so I'm not sure if the commitment lines are actually used.

The chairs are standard-style poker chairs, but with unusually ornate backs. I don't really like 'em. I think the decorative open back style of the chairs makes them somewhat uncomfortable. At least they look nice.

There is an electronic progressive jackpot sign in the corner of the room, and underneath it sits a coffee table and a water-cooler. A lot of players definitely like these amenities, but something about the way it was designed here reminds me of more old-school poker rooms like Circus Circus, which is not exactly a positive association.

Hilton's poker room is decent. It is an average poker room with average player-amenities and atmosphere.

Competition Rating: 3
Competition at the Hilton poker room consists of a lot of decent, older, local players. This place is definitely no fish tank. However, you can expect the competition to be much more loose when a big convention is in town.

The Hilton poker room has a monopoly on conventioneers looking for a nearby poker game, so during certain conventions the poker room should have a healthy drunk-tourist-to-local ratio.

Dealer Rating: 4
The Hilton poker room has a mixed bag of dealers. Some of them are experienced, but others are as green as the felt on the table. Nevertheless, all the dealers are friendly and a personable.

Two dealers are even young, cute, and female. This is like the holy trinity of poker dealer qualities. The fact that these ladies are both pleasant and competent at their jobs makes them a rare breed indeed.

Cocktail Rating: 4
The cocktails came faster than I can drink 'em, but I've only been to the Hilton poker room when it's not busy. I can't say how the cocktail service is when the poker room is slammed, but I have seen two cocktail waitresses working the poker room at the same time, and this is usually more than adequate for an 11 table poker room, even at its capacity.

The cocktail waitresses are friendly, and they allowed me to keep more than one drink at a time, which is really cool. One waitress even rolled over a small side-table for me to set my extra drinks on. I didn't ask her to do this, and the fact that she volunteered made her gesture even more respectable.

The Hilton cocktail waitresses serve Red Bull, although not in the can. However, when I inquired about whether it was authentic Red Bull before ordering (I'm a Red Bull snob, I know), the cocktail waitress actually brought out the can and poured it into my glass right in front of me. Her stock went way up with this one. A+.

These ladies are not the most beautiful in Vegas, but they're by no means ugly, and their service is tops. Very, very solid cocktail service.

Management Rating: 3
Management seems good, but I haven't seen them challenged by a hectic crowd, or by the pressure of making a tough floor decision.

I am very happy to see that the Hilton embraced technology by spending a little dough on the computerized wait-list system. This should help with the hectic crowd whenever it arrives.

Comps Rating: 3
The Hilton poker room offers $1 per hour in comp credit.

One major pet peeve is that players can not sign up for the comp card at the poker room. Rather, you have to walk all the way to the front of the casino to apply for the comp card. This is a huge inconvenience, and I hope somebody at the Hilton poker room fixes it soon.

A progressive Royal Flush jackpot is offered if you hit a heart Royal Flush. The minimum pay-out on this Royal is $2,500. All other Royals receive $500 bonuses.
