Luxor Poker Tournaments: Yes
Weekend Wait-Time: Because there are only 14 tables, on busy weekends the list can get a little long, especially if you are picky about which limit you want to play. Usually, the higher the limit, the shorter the list. Smoking Allowed: No The Luxor is a Mandalay Resort property, so No Smoking is allowed in the poker room. Poker Room Rate: Yes Daily Room Rates: $89 (Sunday -Thursday) $129 (Friday & Saturday) Daily Play Requirement: 5 hours Editor's Review - Luxor Poker Room Total Rating: 3.45 Room Quality Rating: 3 The poker room at Luxor is average. Situated near the moving walkway to Excalibur, the Luxor poker room is basic but functional. An electronic sign at the front of the poker room displays the games offered, but that is the extent of technological sophistication in this poker room. The tables are of average quality. Branded with the Luxor logo and yellow commitment lines many of the tables also have built in auto-shufflers and drink-holders. Chairs at the Luxor poker room are colored in rich red fabric and are relatively comfortable. The Luxor poker room can get mighty cozy. There is unfortunately not a lot of spacing between tables, but I won't go so far as to call the poker room cramped. It's usually not. There are four very old school televisions in the poker room. These are definitely not high-definition. Avoid the Luxor poker room if you want to watch a game while you play cards. In late 2005 Luxor slightly enlarged its poker room. It moved the management counter to the front of the poker room. In terms of management, this is a huge improvement from having the counter at the back of room. It also opened up space for more poker tables. Finally, my Sprint PCS cell phone does not work in the poker room at Luxor, or anywhere nearby the poker room. This is unusual. It also sucks. My cell phone works fine inside every other poker room in Las Vegas. Competition Rating: 4 Competition at the Luxor poker room is softer than average. Luxor is a very low limit poker room, and it attracts a lot of inexperienced poker players. However, watch out for the locals. The Luxor poker room has a loyal client base of decent local players because it offers above average comps and freerolls. These local players are usually not very hard to spot. They stand out when compared with the abundance of fish typically swimming around the poker room. Dealers there report that the Luxor poker room is weird in at least one regard. Although most poker rooms really get rocking around 8:00 p.m. dealers at Luxor tell me that the Luxor poker room does not usually get really busy until after midnight. I must disclose that I have a special place in my heart for the Luxor poker room. It was the first poker room where I ever played a live No Limit cash-game. With a regular $50 buy-in No Limit game, Luxor is one of the most popular poker rooms in Vegas to try out No Limit poker. As such, a lot of first timer No Limit players are attracted to the Luxor poker room. Experienced players should love this. Dealer Rating: 3 Dealers at the Luxor poker room are average. None of the dealers stand out in my mind as either terribly bad or spectacularly skilled or personable. In my experience they are mostly competent, and make relatively few mistakes. The dealers do something funny however. Periodically you will hear a dealer call out for a "screwdriver!" At first you might think the dealer wants a drink. The dealer actually wants someone to bring over the flathead screwdriver to push raked chips through the drop box when they get stuck. Sometimes a dealer will jokingly specify the type of alcohol they want with their screwdriver, for example: "Kettle One screwdriver please!" -- Stupid, but funny. Cocktail Rating: 3 Luxor cocktail service is average in the poker room. The cocktail waitresses at Luxor are average looking, and bring drinks at average speed; usually once every 15-20 minutes. They do not serve Red Bull, but they do serve Sobe. I hate Sobe energy drinks, but it is better than nothing (unless you are a Red Bull snob like me). The most recent cocktail waitress that served me did include six cherries in my cherry Coke when I requested extra cherries. That is a respectable number of cherries, but it is not enough to pull these ladies above an average rating after everything is considered. Management Rating: 3 Management at the Luxor poker room is solid. The poker room is well run. Unfortunately, some of the poker managers at Luxor are a little light in the personality department (there are rocks in my backyard with more personality). If you can get them talking, rather than just grunting and pointing, managers at Luxor are full of good information about the poker room. However, this is easier said than done. I want a warm and inviting experience from management at a poker room, and managers at Luxor just don�t do it for me. There is no computerized list management system, which is becoming a requirement to be regarded as a top Vegas card room. Comps Rating: 5 There is a reason that the poker room at Luxor has regularly been voted the best poker room in Las Vegas by readers of the Las Vegas-Review Journal. The Luxor poker room offers very good comps, especially for players who will log enough hours in the poker room to take advantage. Luxor offers weekly freeroll poker tournaments. Players must log 15 hours in live cash games to qualify for the freerolls. Usually local players qualify, and the actual freeroll tournaments are rarely played. Qualifying players are usually happy to chop up the prize, and walk away with $60 to $90 per person depending on the week. That works out to around $5/hr when chopped, which is a very good poker comp. Luxor also offers daily high hand jackpots. From 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. the top four hands get paid $500, $400, $300 and $100 respectively. This promotion also draws a lot of local players in the poker room. Big hand bonuses are available. For example, quads pay $20 and a Royal flush pays $100. A bad beat jackpot is also offered. Luxor Poker Room News Luxor moving its poker room near sports book?
