Poker Room Rate: No Editor's Review - Riviera Poker Room Total Rating: 2.65 Room Quality Rating: 2 **Last Updated: 12/15/08** The poker room at the Riviera is a small operation, located towards the back of the casino, near the Chinese and Italian restaurants. The “room” is actually 7 tables with a raised podium/cashier desk in the center. The room is separated from the rest of the casino by a rail, with one permanent wall. It is a rather plain room with little in the way of frills or amenities. Aesthetically, the room is very plain. Red tufted back chairs are what one would expect from the Bingo hall or convention space. These chairs are not swivel or adjustable height, and do not have wheels. The tables have logoed felt, armrests, and lack autoshufflers. The room is actually qualifies as a poker area, as there is only 1 permanent wall, with the rest of the room enclosed by a rail. Overall, the room quality is quite low, but rather fitting for a Hotel Casino that has been around as long as Riviera has been. This room tends to fit the property well, as the expectation of a typical customer looking for the poker room at the Riviera is traditionally going to possess a rather low expectation already. Competition Rating: 4 The competition at the Riviera is very soft. Though the room has its fair share of locals (mainly due to their freeroll), the players are all quite clueless when it comes to proper game theory. Also, the limit games are often filled with hotel guests that are looking to simply have a good time and have a few drinks. The NL games are short stacked, and usually involve pushing frequently and rebuying often from the standard poor quality players that placate this room. Overall, the competition is a strong selling point of this room. The players are amongst the worst of any of the small rooms, and the games are good because of it. Dealer Rating: 3 The dealers in the Riviera poker room have improved significantly since the room opened. The staff is welcoming and friendly to new players (which are common in the Riviera’s games) and control the games fairly well. Some dealers tend to talk a bit much, causing the games to slow down at times, and the mechanical skill of the majority of the dealers is fine. There are definitely some dealers that could use some refresher courses on basic dealing mechanics, as well as when to comment and when not to comment on certain things on the table, but overall, these issues are minor. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service at the Riviera poker room is average in nearly all respects, but excels slightly in the quickness factor. The waitresses are quick, the drinks are all made correctly, and all basic liquors and beers are available. No Red Bull or top shelf is available, but it is also not expected from this venue. The waitresses are a mixture of younger girls and the service is done with a smile. The cocktail service is not a reason to dislike the room, but is not a reason to highly rank the room either. For all intents and purposes, the cocktail services offered at the Riviera is exactly what you would expect. Management Rating: 2 The management of the Riviera poker room is substandard. The technology is lacking in all areas (lack of autoshufflers, lack of electronic list management, lack of hourly tracked comps on the Riviera players card). This is a room that is treated like a second rate department from the casino management, and it shows. There are times when the desk must close completely due to staff/technical issues, leaving some customers waiting for extended periods of time, and other times when it is obvious that the staff is overworked and lacking in enough hours to properly schedule and maintain the room. Tableside foodservice is not offered, a drop is taken even if there is no flop, and when the room goes dark, it closes for the night, and reopens the following day at 10AM. The human element tends to be a strong point. The managers I spoke with were personable, knowledgeable, and seemed to genuinely appreciate the players in the room. The human element is the only reason that the Riviera did not receive a 1 in the management category. Comps Rating: 3 The Riviera poker room offers $1 per hour comps on your Riviera players’ card. This is tracked by paper and pen at the desk, and is updated daily on the cards. The comps can be used for food only, and a paper comp is required from the poker room to redeem. The Riviera does offer “the lowest poker room rate in town” according to the manager I spoke with. Call for details. The rate is liberally given for about five hours of play a day, and can be as low as $20 a night, depending on occupancy and season. High hand jackpots are also offered. They start at $25 and cap out at $500. This is one of the lowest paying high hand jackpots in Las Vegas, with the lowest caps. The jackpots are kept low due to the weekly freeroll that requires 20 hours of play. The freeroll has a 3K prize pool, and runs weekly.
