Smoking Allowed: No Poker Room Rate: Yes Daily Room Discount: $40 discount off applicable room rate Daily Play Requirement: 5 hours Editor's Review - MGM Grand Poker Room Total Rating: 4.20 Room Quality Rating: 5 **Last Updated: 10/30/09** The MGM Grand poker room is one of the most popular rooms in Las Vegas, catering itself to all levels of players looking for games as high as 2/5NLHE and as low as 2/4LHE. The 20 table room is one of the few rooms in Las Vegas to consistently maintain cash games 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Also, it holds the distinction of being the only Big Room on the south side of the Strip, being flanked by two properties that lack card rooms altogether (New York New York and Tropicana), it is no surprise that the MGM Grand holds the crown as the best overall action oriented poker room on the south side of the Las Vegas Strip. Housing nearly 7,000 hotel rooms and suites, the MGM Grand is the second largest hotel in world (second only to Venetian), and houses a casino that exceeds 150,000 square feet. The poker room is located on the south side of the resort, adjacent to the Race and Sports Book, the Rainforest Café, and the Lion Habitat. It shares a common wall with a popular lounge called Centrifuge, which brings a significant amount of ambiance and atmosphere to the venue. When reviewing overall room quality, one would be hard pressed to rate this room with anything below a 5/5 rating. The furnishings are all high quality and the tables and chairs are maintained well. The aesthetical adornments all exude an aura of class and old Vegas style, and the dealer uniforms are basic, simple, and most importantly, professional. The one major critique (which is admittedly a sheer matter of opinion) is that the tables include a marble racetrack for chip storage. This is a major pet peeve of this reviewer, though many others seem to like it. The room has a dedicated poker room cashier cage, in addition to a dedicated brush desk where the lists are maintained. The MGM Grand was the first Strip room to utilize the Genesis Gaming Bravo system, including tableside units to swipe and track players through the use of their MGM Mirage players’ card. As the room utilizes both the tableside units and the list management software, open seats are tracked with fluidity. It is obvious that the room is attempting to align itself with the Big Rooms (even World Class) rooms in its controversial decision to not have a jackpot drop. The MGM rakes at 10%/$4 max on most games, and does not drop a jackpot dollar, thus the room does not offer any special promotions (e.g. High Hand jackpots, freerolls, Bad Beat Jackpots, etc). The only rooms in Vegas that do this are all world class venues including Bellagio, Mirage, Wynn, and Venetian. Though this reviewer does not view MGM to be the same class as most of the aforementioned rooms, it is definitely one of the most popular and aesthetically comforting rooms in the city. Though the room has many positive points, as noted, there are certainly some downsides to the room. Firstly, the location of the poker room is horrendous in relation to parking. There is simply no convenient onsite parking with regards to this card room. The quickest way to navigate yourself to the MGM poker room is to valet park at Tropicana and cross the bridge. Valet parking or self parking at MGM puts you at the complete opposite end of the massive resort. The chairs are slightly above average quality when compared to most rooms, but MGM is the only big room that does not have adjustable height swivel chairs (the other rooms in this category, including Venetian, Wynn, Bellagio, Mirage, and Caesars Palace all have adjustable height swivel chairs). The rather oddly shaped venue spreads out games quite far from each other, making it at times difficult to locate where you are supposed to go once directed to a table. This is a minor issue, and is more complimentary then critical, as the space between the tables is quite generous allowing the room to be navigable quite easily. Overall, the technology that this room utilizes is quite impressive, and the overall layout of the room is a mixture of sleek, understated, and modern. When taking into account strictly room quality, the MGM Grand is certainly one of the best in Vegas. Competition Rating: 5 One of the strongest selling points of the MGM Grand poker room is a combination of the softness of the games and the sheer action. It is not uncommon to see 6-8 1/2NLHE games in addition to 2 2/5 games and a few low limit games on any average weekday evening. The NLHE games are often populated mostly with hotel guests and casual recreational players, though the room does have a solid number of regulars, largely due to the quick turnover and well known soft reputation of the games. Some argue that the 1/2NLHE and 2/5NLHE are the best games in all of Vegas. This reviewer tends to disagree with the former but wholeheartedly agrees on the latter. The 2/5NLHE has replaced Bellagio as the most consistently soft higher level No Limit game in the city. With a fairly low min/max buy in of $200-$500, this game spreads daily on usually two tables, and offers a select group of regulars and daily tourists that simply feed the game. Comparably, other well known regularly spread 2/5 games such as Venetian, Wynn, and Caesars Palace are consistently tougher and deeper games. The 2/5 at MGM, in this reviewer’s opinion is the overall best 2/5 game in the city, on a regular basis. Overall, the competition at the MGM Grand is quite soft and allows for a simple ABC poker player to do fairly well in the game. Even if you happen to get seated at a bad table, the MGM allows for better than average game selection due to the sheer number of games spreading at any given time. The competition aspects are amongst the strongest selling points of this room. Dealer Rating: 4 The MGM Grand dealers have improved exponentially since the room grand opened a few years back. Most are older, experienced dealers, who do their jobs quickly and efficiently with little to no chit chat or glad handling of the players. This is generally expected of a world class venue, where dealers are expected to simply “shut up and deal”, but is rather archaic by modern standards, especially in a room that is populated largely by young college aged hothead types. When taking into consideration the atmosphere that the MGM Grand poker room exudes, younger and more personality driven dealers are more expected, versus the older, quiet, reserved types. Having said that, this particular reviewer prefers dealers like those at the MGM that simply do their jobs, and do not get involved in the conversations of the players, as it often leads to dealer mistakes. Dealers that stay focused, like those at MGM get more hands out per down, and can be expected to deal a fair and quick game, which is not always the case with personality driven vocal dealers. Overall, the dealers at MGM Grand are above average with regards to dealing competency, below average when it comes to entertaining personalities and about equal to those of the comparable big rooms. Since it seems that mixed or HORSE games are rare to nonexistent at MGM Grand, the true competence level of these dealers cannot be judged by this reviewer. This is much easier to judge at Venetian, Wynn, and Bellagio, where the dealers have significant experience in dealing mixed games on a daily basis, due to the game spreads of said rooms. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service has taken a strong step down since the rooms opening a few years ago, unfortunately. The selection has been relegated to near bare bones basics. Red Bull is no longer served, nor are shots, and any frozen drinks. Top shelf and many call drinks are also not available. The cocktail quality here has fallen dangerously close to the Caesars Palace level (Caesars is known industry wide as having the worst cocktail service in the city). When a customer orders Red Bull, they are served an energy drink known as Rhino, and is it poured from a cocktail gun, so no can is available. Usually, the waitress will not inform the customer what they are really receiving, when Red Bull is ordered. The speed is another area of concern. At times, it seems that there is only one server assigned to the room, even during relatively busy hours, which can lead to delays of 40 or more minutes between drink orders. During weekend peak shifts, this can be a major area of complaint, but usually the room is staffed more appropriately during those times. The weeknights, though, can often have longer than average delays in beverage orders, and the Genesis Bravo tableside cocktail service buttons are rarely paid any attention to by anyone. The servers are union, but are generally friendly, and somewhat attentive. Though nowhere near the attractive nature of Wynn or Venetian, these ladies are competent and explain the lack of premium beverages with a smile. Overall, the cocktail service is one of the truly weak links of this poker venue. Though the service quality can vary greatly by shift, the lack of premium beverages coupled with the lack of any frozen drinks or shots will continue to relegate MGM Grand to a sub world class level, allowing Venetian, Bellagio, and Wynn to cement themselves into the top three spots. Management Rating: 3 The management of the MGM Grand poker room is above average. It is obvious that the staff is competent, well trained on poker protocol, and are educated in proper decisions and overall room management. Having said that, there have been times when the management do not seem to be very approachable or front and forward with the players most of the time. In the 20 or so sessions that this reviewer has booked at the MGM Grand poker room, there have only been a handful of times where he has noticed senior room management in the room and interacting with players. The floor personnel are walking the floor and attentive, but the real decision makers seem to be often behind closed doors or not acclimated with front end customer handling. Having said that, the floor personnel and overall staff is professional and attentive to customer needs, though the brush staff could definitely use some re-training when it comes to greeting and welcoming guests to the room. Too often, they are seated and conversing with each other versus immediately greeting and welcoming the players approaching the desk. Furthermore, it seems that brushes/chip runners could be managed slightly more effectively, as players that are directed to a table are often not explained exactly where said table is, or which seat is available (which the Genesis Bravo system displays to the front hosts in a very legible fashion). It does not seem like the staff is very eager to open their room up to any games other than the basic Texas Hold’em, as this reviewer has never seen a mixed or HORSE game spread there at any time, which is not the case with the comparable big rooms. When judging a rooms' management, we take into consideration how the room is managed on the high level (i.e. staff scheduling, motivation, cocktail agreements, and training). It is the decision of management not to serve shots, frozen drinks, or Red Bull to poker patrons. This is a decision that shows that MGM Grand's senior management views poker players as less important than other patrons, due to this limitation. Overall, the management of the MGM Grand poker room is above average due to their integration of technology and electronic player management systems, but significantly below average when compared to Venetian and Wynn. Comps Rating: 3 MGM Grand poker room grants players $1 per hour in comps on the MGM Grand players’ card. These earned comps require a paper comp from the room for redemption and can only be used in specific food venues. Also, these comps are only redeemable at MGM Grand, and cannot be used or redeemed at any other property. The comps are tracked tableside on the players’ card through the Genesis Bravo tracking units, so every hour is property accounted for. MGM Grand does not run any major promotions, as the room does not have a jackpot drop. This means that there are no high hand or bad beat jackpots, and no freerolls of any kind. When comparing MGM Grand to the other big rooms, its comp policy pits it above Bellagio and Mirage, but below that of Venetian, Wynn, and Caesars Palace. Though the redemption protocol and limited comp usability is a disappointing, the $1 per hour given on all games is average and standard within the industry. Overall, the comps at the MGM Grand are average across the board. The lack of a jackpot drop limits the amount of promotions that the room can run due to capital, but the Genesis Bravo tableside tracking demonstrates a commitment to poker and consistency in comp tracking that is appreciated by all players.
