Editor's Review - Boulder Station Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.80

Room Quality Rating: 4
**Last Updated: 09/30/09**

The Boulder Station poker room is a very unique poker venue on many levels. First of all, it is a smoking room. It is one of the last rooms in Las Vegas to allow smoking 24/7, and is the most “mainstream” room of the remaining smoking venues. Though they do offer non-smoking tables, (two our of eleven), the majority of the games are smoke filled. Another unique aspect of Boulder station is the fact that their main game is not Hold’em. Boulder Station is the only regularly spread Omaha High Only game in the entire city. The game is 4/8 with a half kill (goes to 6/12). These two aspects make Boulder Station quite a unique poker venue.

Overall, the aesthetics of Boulder Station are rather comforting, if not plain. The tables are all rather worn, and the chairs are standard non swivel poker chairs. The room is enclosed in glass, and it is an actual room, not an area. Side tables are available, as well as a coffee and water bar. Lots of televisions are mounted throughout the room for sports viewing, and all tables have auto shufflers installed (standard with Stations’ properties).

As with all other Stations poker rooms, Boulder is fully equipped with the Genesis Bravo tableside comp tracking system as well as full electronic waitlist and self service kiosk. Stations poker rooms are at the forefront of new poker room management technology, which puts it ahead of many rooms, including most Strip rooms.

The Omaha High game that they spread is what this room is most well known for. It is arguably the biggest action 4/8 limit game in all of Las Vegas, consistently. $200+ pots are common, and the average pot is somewhere in the $80-$100 range on every hand. Having 5 players see a flop after capping the action preflop is quite common, as is having all 10 players see a flop, and 8 continuing to the turn after a raise and re-raise on the flop. Rebuys are constantly brought to the table, and this reviewer has witnessed at least one player go through a 7 rack swing in less than an hour and a half. This game has simply incredibly loose action, and for the story alone, I recommend all poker players play this game at least once in their poker career.

Boulder Station allows smoking 24/7. This is a very unique aspect of the room, and many players take full advantage of the opportunity. All smoking tables have two non-smoking seats (the 1 and 10 seats next to the dealer). Ashtrays are available everywhere in this room, as are convenient side tables. A good estimate would be that approximately 60% or more of the Boulder regulars are smokers, most of which play the Omaha game.

Boulder also offers 2/4LHE, 4/8LHE, and 1/2NLHE with a $200 max. This is the only consistently spread NL game in town where smoking is permitted. The game usually starts in the late afternoon, and goes through most of the night.

Overall, the Boulder Station poker room is easily the second busiest poker room within the Station's casino chain (second only to Red Rock). Though GVR may give it a run for its money on some days, Boulder consistently operates 6-8 games nightly from what this reviewer has experienced. Though the rooms aesthetics are slightly below average due to the low quality chairs, the room is very practical in its setup and includes many minor amenities that many comperable rooms lack.

This room is able to earn a 4/5 due to the technology, physical room environment, and comfortable room layout and amenities. Though it is a smoking room, the staff maintains the room well, and cleans up all messes swiftly (including dumping out filled ashtrays). Especially for smoking players, this is suprising a very nice and comfortable room. If they were to upgrade their chairs to those found at Red Rock and Santa Fe Station, they would more than likely be able to earn a 5/5 rating for overall room quality.

Competition Rating: 3
This room is almost entirely local players that play here every day. This does not mean that they are good players (watching the Omaha game for 10 minutes will tell you that they are not), but they are certainly more experienced with how the games at Boulder Station are generally played. This is especially true in the Omaha game, where it is the same faces almost every night.

The NL game can have some phenomenal action when the game gets going (usually around 6Pm at night, with it breaking usually around midnight). A few loose regulars mixed with the standard weak tight players that full most of the Stations rooms in Las Vegas. What is key for making the game so good is a small handful of wealthy regulars that simply dump money on the table. Very surprising. The Hold’em games vary by the limit. The 2/4 game tends to be older women and men socializing and chatting with cards being secondary. The 4/8LHE game is standard Stations fare, and has some cowboys and other older locals.

Generally, the clientele of the Boulder Station poker room is older smokers from the Boulder Highway area. Though some do travel from across town to play in the Omaha game, the room caters mainly to smokers. This adds a buffer to the room where solid non-smoking players tend to avoid the room, allowing the smoking regulars to fill the seats. This room tends to offer significantly softer games than most Stations' rooms, from what this reviewer has experienced.

Dealer Rating: 4
These are certainly a patient group of people!

The dealers at Boulder Station are all competent, older, and experienced. None are break-in dealers fresh out of dealer school.
Having to deal with multiple Omaha showdowns, smoke getting blown all over the table, and the general demeanor of most of the Omaha customers, these dealers put up with a significant amount of stress, but all do so well, and with pride.
Also, their personalities tend to come out a quite a bit as well. Some are pretty dry in their sarcastic sense of humors, and others simply dummy up and deal. In general, the dealing staff at Boulder fit the room nicely, with no major complaints.

Cocktail Rating: 2
The cocktail staff at the Boulder Station poker room are all experienced and generally very good at their jobs. Cocktails come quickly, and are made well. The Strawberry Julious’ are amongst the best in the city, believe it or not, and should be consumed quickly (otherwise the strawberry puree and the milk separate, and form an interesting looking concoction).

The waitresses are suprising quite young and attractive, moreso than most other Stations' properties.

Red Bull (Sugar free and regular) is served in the can. Boulder is one of the only Station casinos that serves real Red Bull in the can to customers. Beer selection is standard, as is the premium drink availability.

Service can be quite slow, pacing at usually about 30 minutes, depending on the time of day.

Overall, the cocktail service at Boulder is above average largely due to the availability of certain drinks, the size of the drinks served (Perrier is served in full size bottles, compared to the mini bottles served at most places).

Management Rating: 4
As with all Stations rooms, the Boulder Station poker room utilizes the Bravo system, which tracks players’ comps at the table, and the list management system is electronic, with the board on the screen above the management podium.

The managers that run the Boulder Station poker room are all experienced and seem to like their jobs. They are friendly with the players and generally make all players feel welcome in the poker room.

Comps Rating: 5
Boulder Station poker room follows the same comp system that the rest of the Station’s group follows. Players earn $1 per hour for cash games and tournaments, and the comp goes directly onto the players’ card. The comp dollars can be redeemed at any Stations property for food and beverage, as well as in the gift shop. Currently, triple comps ($3 per hour) are awarded during the 3AM to 9AM timeframe.

All Stations recently updated their comps to award $1 an hour for tournaments as well as cash games. They are the only casinos that I am aware of that do this.

Stations Casinos do not offer high hand jackpots for quads, but they do pay $200 for Straight Flushes and $250 for Royal Flushes in Hold’em. They offer two Bad Beat jackpots; one is a joint property promotion, where everyone who is playing in every Stations poker room received a players share when it hits. It is usually Quads beaten. They also offer a 10K property Bad Beat jackpot which is Aces full of 10s beaten. The property jackpot is paid to the table only, and is a static amount.

In addition to the standard promotions that all Stations offer their poker room customers, each property is allowed a jackpot amount that can be used for a monthly promotion of their choice. It could be a monthly freeroll, a flopped quad bonus, or something else along those lines. As this monthly promotion changes frequently, I recommend contacting Boulder Station directly to find out what the current property specific promotion is this month.

One thing that Boulder does which is exclusive to them, is special promotions for Omaha players. This includes special high hand jackpots for straight flush wheels on certain days as well as a special Bab Beat Jackpot just for Omaha (I believe it is quad Jacks beaten as a static qualifier).

Poker room comps can be redeemed at any of the Station property food venues with the simple swipe of the players’ card and player PIN number entry.

Overall, the comps at Boulder Station (and all Station’s casinos for that matter) are well above average and really set the standard for how poker room comps should be utilized. The user friendly Boarding Pass player’s card really revolutionized the poker comp system, and all competing properties should really look to the Station’s model for how to handle poker room comps and their versatility of use.
