Editor's Review - Sam's Town Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.25

Room Quality Rating: 4
**Last Updated: 01/25/09**

The Sam’s Town poker room is the largest poker room on Boulder Highway and one of the oldest continuously operating card rooms in the city. Recently relocated and remodeled the modern Sam’s Town poker room is a far cry from the humble poker parlor that it once was. The room has been upgraded significantly, with new adjustable height swivel chairs, re-felted tables, side tables, and autoshufflers in half of the room’s tables. The new room is significantly more open than the previous location, with a large half wall that encloses the room and allows for significant rail birding. The room is completely non-smoking (and in fact is located alongside a non smoking slot area), though it is directly adjacent to a video poker casino bar where smoking is permitted. The manager’s desk is located directly at the front entrance to the room, and the room is located perfectly parallel to a parking structure. All in all, this is wonderful location for the room, despite being a significant trek from both the table games pit as well as the sports book.

The current 11 table room offers a daily spread of 4/8 LHE with a half kill and 2/4LHE also with a half kill. There is a daily 1-5 Stud Hi game (with $.25 ante) that spreads during the day, as well as a larger double qualifier stud game that spreads Wednesday nights. The room is designed to cater specifically to the older locals that populate the Boulder Strip area. These players prefer a low limit game much more so then a NL game. A 1/2 NL game often does get going after the popular NLHE tournament starts at 7PM, though. This game is often filled with dealers playing on or off the clock, which provide a nice action game (a true rarity for NL on Boulder Highway).

Aesthetically, the Sam’s Town poker room is quite nice, and actually much nicer then the hotel casino itself (which is largely due to the poker room being remodeled and relocated very recently). Dark wood veneers with burgundy and tan accents adorn the room, with modern chandeliers providing very bright light shining over all tables. Despite these new furnishings, the maintenance is a little lacking at times, with tables not necessarily brushed or trash cleaned as often as it should be to maintain the rather high quality room that the casino installed.

The room is light on technology other then the autoshufflers. They do not use an electronic list tracking system nor do they track players’ comps at the table. The list is maintained on paper, and there are no hourly comps issues on the players card (instead a paper comp is given upon request).

Overall, the room quality of the Sam’s Town poker room is much higher than one would expect given the reputation, location, and feel of the hotel and casino. In fact, aesthetically, it is arguably the nicest poker room on Boulder Highway, though most certainly second (or possibly third) with regard to action and games selection (Boulder Station holds the number one spot by a large margin).

Competition Rating: 3
The Sam’s Town poker room caters exclusively to older locals, truckers, and budget minded Vegas tourists. This translates into quite soft games most of the time. Though many (if not most) of the locals that play daily in this room all know each other and chat incessantly with each other and the dealers, they still play predictably and weak tight most of the time. This is a room that depends on its staff to fill and start games, so it is not uncommon to see a dealer or floorman sit in on a game when it is going and then see him cash out to work the floor or deal the game. This is a very casual room with regards to the attitudes and nature of the staff and this is noticed easily at the tables.

The games spread, whether it be 1/2 NLHE or the more popular limit games, are all generally filled with the same players that you see in most off strip Stations casinos (i.e. daily grinder locals trying to break even and socialize). These games require a slightly different approach then a traditional Strip based game, as the players are not tricky at all and tend to call many more bets just to see the last card. Even in the NL game, showdowns tend to be the rule of the land, and simple ABC poker is often the best way to beat the game.

The competition level is not Strip soft, but not Bellagio tough either. The Sam’s Town games are basic black and white limit games which require a basic LHE strategy to get ahead.

Dealer Rating: 3
The dealers at Sam’s Town vary greatly with regards to mechanical skill, personality, and game control. The majority of them are mechanically sound, but a few more corners are cut then should be with regards to proper dealing protocol (i.e. leaving the bets on the felt before turning the next card, or pitching the next round of cards before dropping the jackpot and the rake). This is largely due to the long history that many of the dealers have with the property. Due to the length of time that Sam’s Town has had a card room (nearly 30 years), many of the dealers have decades of experience on the job, and thus are set in their ways, despite some modern advances in technique and protocol. Some of the other dealers are from the newer school of dealing, and thus follow all modern procedures without fail. All of the Sam’s Town dealers seem to maintain very strong game control at all times, and thus, require very little from the floor with regards to decisions and player issues.

Overall, the dealers at Sam’s Town do their jobs well, and interact with all players in a very comfortable and welcoming fashion.

Cocktail Rating: 3
The cocktail staff is a bit overworked most of the time, as the poker room is often one of many areas that the girls need to cover on their shifts. Despite having a service bar directly adjacent to the poker room, the service can often be painfully slow, especially late at night when there are usually only 1 or 2 servers covering the entire casino. However, during the busy shifts, when the cocktail staff is scheduled accordingly, drinks are served with tenacity and with a smile.

The availability of premium drinks is very limited. Red Bull is not available, nor are any major top shelf liquors (this is not limited to the poker room as the casino simply does not stock top shelf at most of its bars).

Overall, the cocktail service is about what you would expect from a locals casino on Boulder Highway, with no major surprised with regard to selection or speed.

Management Rating: 3
The Sam’s Town poker room seems to be managed in a very casual way. Floorpersons and dealers seem to openly work and play in games daily, and the management staff is casual and jovial most of the time.

Though the room was completely overhauled, moved, and rebuilt from scratch, the room is lacking in any sort of electronic list tracking or player comp tracking. The televisions are not located in the most convenient locations (though the restrooms are conveniently close by).

Overall, the management is average, and slightly less than expected given the nice new and vibrant room that grand opened short time ago.

Comps Rating: 2
The Sam’s Town poker room is subpar with regard to comps given to players. They do not track comps on the players’ card, nor do they offer a bad beat jackpot. Instead, they offer sporadic freerolls and various high hand promotions that seem to change monthly.

The only food comp that is available is a coupon for $4 which can be acquired from the shift supervisor. This is a bit antiquated, and puts Sam’s Town at a severe disadvantage considering that its two neighboring competitors (Boulder Station and Eastside Cannery), offer $1 per hour comps on their respective players’ cards and one of them offers a lower rake (Eastside Cannery rakes at 10%/$3 max versus Sam’s Town 10%/$4 max).

Overall, the comp system is not a selling point of the room, and something that the room needs to seriously consider reworking in order to stay competitive on the Boulder Strip.
