Editor's Review - Mirage Poker Room
Total Rating: 4.10
Room Quality Rating: 5
Opening in November 1989, the Mirage Resort and Casino was the first “Megaresort” brought upon Las Vegas by casino mogul Steve Wynn. Its poker room, one of the oldest continuously operating rooms in the city, was the 'be all end all' of poker. This has been forever romanticized by Matt Damon’s character in Rounders as being the “office” for all big name pros. The Mirage will always hold a special place in many poker players’ hearts as the original World Class poker room. Recently updated with new carpeting, fixtures, chairs, and even new dealer uniforms, the Mirage Poker Room is trying hard to stay competitive in a fiercely cutthroat market. The Mirage was the top room in the city until the Bellagio opened in 1998, forcibly moving the big games down the street. Donna Harris, long term Vegas poker icon, took over as the Director of Poker at the same time and held the title until May 2009, when she was relieved of her duties, and eventually replaced with the former TI Poker Room Manager, Christopher Coffin. These many changes for the Mirage have resulted in a room in transition, on many levels. Despite all the major and minor changes, the Mirage remains a high quality card room that locals and tourists alike populate daily.
Times have certainly changed since the Mirage poker room was the definition of world class poker (the opening of other world class rooms like Bellagio, Venetian, and Wynn have added real competition to the poker landscape that did not exist when Mirage was first built), but the room is still a well put together and aesthetically appealing venue. Though this reviewer personally dislikes the decision to take out the beautiful tropical mural that once covered the west wall and misses the pleated tuxedo shirts that the dealers once wore, this room is obviously spending money and effort to remain competitive, and that is respectable. About a year ago, the decision was made to reduce the number of tables from 30 to 25, allowing the room to be more spread out and allow for more room between all tables. This was a welcome decision that aligns it with the better properties (Venetian and Wynn), and is something that is most certainly has over its major replacement competitor, Bellagio.
The aesthetics of the room have changed over the years, but the venue remains generally the same setup. The front podium handles smaller cash games and tournament registration, whereas the back podium handles higher limit games. The originator of the “top section” the Mirage has an elevated area for high limit games, where players can find 10/20LHE, 20/40LHE, and higher NLHE games. Though the tropical theme has largely been removed from the card room, there are still some furnishings (like the ceiling fans and wood detail) that add some flair to the overall setting.
A large improvement to the room that was done fairly recently was adding swivel adjustable height chairs to the room, replacing the standard chairs that the room used for a decade prior. This accompanied with the spacing between the tables has allowed the Mirage to add comfort to its list of general room quality accolades.
The room’s layout is worthy of compliment, as it is a well thought out and planned room, by which many other world class rooms have copied. The half wall surrounding the room allows for ample railing by onlookers (something extremely important for a rooms long term success), and the close proximity to the restroom, smoking areas, and food are all well positioned and allow for utmost comfort for its players. The dedicated cashier cage located on the south side of the room is staffed at all times to allow for players and chip runners to purchase and sell checks, and the sports book is located directly adjacent to the poker room. With the exception of less than convenient self parking, the layout and position of this room in relation to the rest of the casino is quite ideal, and shows that Mr. Wynn knew exactly what he was doing when he designed this resort back in 1989. This layout has been copied and re-copied by nearly every major player in the current poker market in Las Vegas, as it is the definition of a properly laid out and located poker venue (with the reaffirmed exception of parking proximity).
Though the overall room quality is quite high, there are most certainly areas for improvement. Up until fairly recently, all lists were maintained on paper and pen. This has since been updated to the point where the Mirage utilizes electronic boards and computers to maintain their lists, but the room still lacks the Genesis Bravo table management system, which we know that the current manager is looking at getting installed. The current electronic list system is handled well by the employees, but certainly could use an upgrade, as it is not the most easy to read board. Also, the board is posted behind both podiums but at times it can be difficult for a player to figure out where to go to get on a game. This is rather semantical, and is something that the current manager will most certainly correct. This also leads to criticisms with regards to how comps are handled, as they recently started taking the players cards to track comps at the desk, but without the electronic system, this reviewer in unaware how exactly the comps are tracked.
Other criticisms from patrons usually involve smoke, as the tables are often only a few inches from the rail, and thus cigarette smoke can very easily drift into the room. This is somewhat alleviated by the no smoking signs that are posted on the rail itself, but often is still not enough. Though this reviewer does not see this as a major problem, some players find it uncomfortable, and thus worth mentioning.
The Mirage room quality is certainly a selling point of the room, and the recent upgrades to the room show that the property values its poker customers. The new carpets, furnishings, and chairs show an investment to poker and with a new manager at the helm, the room quality can only excel and maintain its top level status.
Competition Rating: 3
The Mirage poker room is a long standing room, with 20 years of continuous operation. Because of this, many daily players populate the room and the games can often be quite tough, especially at the mid and higher limits (2/5, 10/20LHE, and 20/40LHE). The 1/2 NLHE game has a strong number of regulars as well, but the large number of hotel guests help to balance out the games quite nicely.
The limit games, which usually include 3/6LHE, 4/8LHE, 5/10 O8, 10/20LHE, and occasionally higher, are about as expected, with the higher games being significantly tougher than the lower games. The Omaha 8 game is arguably one of the better mid limit Omaha games, with its competition being the 8/16 at Orleans and the 10/20 at the Wynn.
All of these games will have a strong mix of daily regulars and tourists. As with other top tier rooms, the Mirage is considered a “Destination” poker venue, which means that players will stay elsewhere but make an effort to include the Mirage in their playing schedule. Only a few select rooms in Las Vegas hold this designation, and the Mirage is admittedly lower on this list than it once was due to the opening of new top level rooms like Venetian and Wynn, but still is able to achieve its status due to reputation and general game selection which remains better than an average room.
The games at the Mirage are not known as being very soft, but this is not to say that they are not beatable. This reviewer has booked several sessions at the Mirage poker room and is always surprised by how poorly some of the daily regulars play. Predictability and betting patterns are worth their weight in gold, and any astute player should be able to do well here. Having said that, the competition level of the Mirage is still not a selling point of the venue. The room takes itself quite seriously, and the players in the room tend to follow that same protocol. Because the room does not take a jackpot drop, it does not offer any high hand or bad beat jackpots (this is the mark of a serious, poker driven room, which caters to poker players more so than recreational gamblers), thus the games tend to be a little more serious and focused.
Overall, the Mirage poker room competition level is softer than average within the Big Rooms category. When compared to Venetian, Wynn, and Bellagio, the Mirage is softer, but when compared to MGM Grand and smaller rooms, the competition is significantly tougher at the Mirage.
Dealer Rating: 4
The Mirage poker dealers are all experienced, and most are long term employees of the property. Though a few tend to be a little gruff with regards to personality, they all have strong game control and are all mechanically sound, which this reviewer appreciates.
When judging dealing competence, the Mirage rates very highly, as the staff is quite professional, and come from the old school of “shut up and deal” which some players (like myself) enjoy and respect, but other players find intimidating or unwelcoming.
The dealers at the Mirage are familiar with all games, and are able to handle mixed games and specialty games without hesitation. They are receptive to courtesy and control their games and players in a tight manner. Overall, the dealers at the Mirage are near top notch. We would like to see a slightly friendlier outlook from a few of the more serious types, but this is a minor critique. The dealers at the Mirage are certainly a selling point of the venue.
Cocktail Rating: 4
The cocktail service at the Mirage is below average when compared to Venetian and Wynn, but well above average when compared to Caesars Palace and MGM Grand. It is about the same as Bellagio, which is not surprising considering the resorts are set up rather similarly.
The waitresses are generally very friendly and attractive, and with the rather close location of the service bar, quite quick during most shifts (though service can be extremely slow during the peak busy hours).
The cocktail selection is slightly above average, with frozen drinks and shots available to those that order them.
The cocktail service at the Mirage is about as expected within the industry. It is not well beyond the call of duty (for that, see Venetian), nor is it the worst (for that, see Caesars Palace). It is average within the Big Rooms, and is neither a selling point or a weak link of the overall room's rating.
Management Rating: 4
**(As of this writing (June, 2009), the Mirage has a brand new poker room manager, Christopher Coffin, who just started a few weeks ago. Coffin is a long standing member of Las Vegas poker community, and is the first new Mirage manager since 1998. The management section of this review will be reassessed in a few months once Chris has a chance to work the room. For now, this section of the review will be based on the current state of the room.**
The Mirage poker room management is an area for improvement that the manager is currently addressing. Though the room, on the high level, is managed quite well with obvious investments being made in the room, aesthetical improvements, and proper layout, the room suffers due to obvious staff cutbacks, unwelcoming floor staff, and lack of solid customer service.
Had the room not recently hired a brand new manager, who has not had ample opportunity to rework the room as of this writing, the benefit of the doubt will be granted, and the room will earn a 4/5 for this section. Had this reviewer based the number strictly on what he has experienced at the Mirage, this number would be closer to 3/5 at best.
Areas for concern with regards to management are largely staffing related. It seems that one of the biggest complaints about this room is the lack of chip runners and ability for players (and even dealers) to get check when needed to allow for players to rebuy quickly in cash games and for dealers to maintain their wells. Aside from the lack of chip runners/brushes, the room lacks the technology that one would expect from a world class room. The Venetian has Genesis Bravo installed in all cash game tables. Wynn and Caesars swipe the players’ cards at the front podium and credit players with at least $1 per hour (more on higher limits). The Mirage emulates Bellagio in that it grants a flat paper comp based loosely on how many hours are played, but is not always properly tracked.
The floor staff is generally okay, but not necessarily the friendliest or most welcoming, from what this reviewer has experienced. Far too often, the players are pointed elsewhere when trying to sign up for a game or tournament. Though not nearly as bad as Bellagio, this is still an area for improvement.
When rendering games decisions, the floor management is always educated on proper protocol and obviously are very familiar with the games. The previous director was not the most front and forward person when it came to greeting and meeting with the customers. It is expected that Coffin will change this, as he is often friendly and front and forward with his customers.
Overall, the Mirage management is in the point of transition, and AVP will seriously re-evaluate the management after Chris has had a few months to work the room. Chris is a long standing member of AVP, and often solicits and appreciates feedback given to him from AVP members. This hands on approach to management is something that the players strongly respect and is worthy of commendation. This reviewer is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to reassess the Mirage management, and fully expects the room to achieve the 5/5 ranking upon said reassessment.
Comps Rating: 3
The Mirage comp system is antiquated, though it has been improved slightly over the past year. Up until about a year ago, the Mirage was on the same comp program as the Bellagio, and issued $15 paper comps to players, upon request only, and only after an undetermined amount of play. A tip was often expected, and the vouchers would also run out on a daily basis. This is a rather old fashioned form of comps based on who is “in the know”, and has since been updated.
The new system involves taking the players card upon entry and tracking the players hours manually. Once a certain number of hours have been played, a food voucher is granted that covers a meal at the buffet or CPK. This new system is a vast improvement over the previous one, but is still antiquated considering the new technology that has been made available to poker rooms over the years.
MGM Grand, Venetian, TI, and most of the Harrah’s properties all use the Genesis Bravo system to track players’ comps tableside, thus allowing them to give a flat hourly comp to all players, equally without issue. The new Mirage poker room manager is working on getting this installed at the Mirage, and we commend him for trying, given the tough economic times for all rooms right now.
The Mirage does not drop a jackpot dollar, which aligns it with the other Big Rooms in the city (Caesars Palace is the only big room on the Strip that drops a jackpot drop), so there are no high hand jackpots, freerolls, or bad beat jackpots to speak of, but most of the serious players appreciate this.
Overall, the comps at the Mirage are an area for improvement, but with the new blood at the helm, it is expected that all these issues will be improved and corrected with time, allowing the Mirage to once again be competitive in the market that it helped create.
