Smoking Allowed: No Poker Room Rate: Yes Daily Room Rates: $35 (Sunday -Thursday) $65 (Friday & Saturday) Daily Play Requirement: 5-6 hours Editor's Review - Plaza Poker Room Total Rating: 2.40 Room Quality Rating: 2 The Plaza has made some recent changes in ownership and this is evident to anyone whom may have visited the casino in the past couple of years. Specifically, the poker room has been decreased in size. The Poker Room at the Plaza is quite easy to find. Upon stepping out of the parking garage elevators or using the entrance on the side where the bus station is located, the distance is about a one minute walk straight and to the left. The Plaza Poker Room is located directly in front of the main cashier and next to the showroom. The Plaza’s Poker Room isn’t really a room at all. The tables are located in the corner of the casino with a small room in the back with four Pan 9 tables. I believe this is the only location in Southern Nevada to find a Pan 9 game. On my most recent visit to the Poker Room at the Plaza, several changes were immediately noticeable. First off, there were previously 20+ tables as well as a rope for a rail that ran around the front portion of the Plaza’s Poker Room. The rope is gone now and the remaining tables have been pushed much closer together even though there is an abundance of space in this area now. There is no authentic vibe about the Plaza poker room that makes you feel like you’re in a serious card playing environment. The Poker Room at the Plaza is quite clean, the felt on the tables are all new, the chairs are of average comfort and similar to those you’ll find at most Las Vegas poker rooms. The tables do not have cup holders or fancy wooden/marble rails. The felt covers the entire table and the tables have betting lines which are enforced. There are also two older 25” televisions hanging on the walls. The tournament clock, cashier area, and the list are all kept at the managers’ podium. Competition Rating: 4 Most of the players at the Plaza’s Poker Room either have no clue how to play poker and are just playing because they are staying there, or they are locals playing 2/4 limit Holdem. Poker is just socialization for most people that play at the Plaza Poker Room since 2/4 limit is the highest and only limit game that is regularly spread. The 1-2 No limit game that was running was full of the young gun type of poker players that have all seen the WPT on television once too many. The players that I ran up against in the tournament on my most recent trip to the Plaza were just plain bad. Most of them didn’t even know how to make a raise or what the proper motion for a check was. This is great and can lead to some interesting (and possibly profitable) tournament play. Dealer Rating: 2 On my most recent trip to the Plaza Poker Room, I was very unimpressed with the dealers working the room. Although quite pleasant, they were very slow and were not very familiar with the rules of the game whatsoever. They also need to learn how to match bet sizes by amounts and not one chip color at a time. I saw lots of exposed burn cards, flipped cards, and just sloppy dealing overall. A couple of them seemed to be confused in No Limit when a player raises in a tournament more than the minimum raise. Big blind was T1200 and a player made it T2600 to go, the dealer threw T200 back to the player and said the player had to make increments of the big blind. This is completely incorrect procedure and the manager on duty was there to correct this. I am sure with adequate training and encouragement from Plaza Poker Room Management, these dealers could be quite good in time. I did not see any managers trying to help out the dealers. It seemed to be more of a wait and see what they do next kind of approach. Cocktail Rating: 2 If getting quick drinks of mediocre quality is your thing, the Plaza Poker Room is the place for you. The servers were all very polite, middle aged, and very fast with the service. There were not a lot of tables going the last time I played in the Poker Room at the Plaza but the servers also had to attend to the pit tables. When I ordered various mixed drinks, the servers answers were “no we don’t have that, nope, not that one” and so on. These were not high end alcohol mixtures that I was requesting. They were just your normal run of the mill stuff that you’d find in most any casino bar. I can understand this as the clientele and the casino are quite different than what you’ll find on the Las Vegas Strip. Management Rating: 3 The Managers at the Plaza Poker Room greeted me and asked me what games or tournaments I was interested in playing in. They keep a paper wait list system but it is only used on weekends. The managers also prompt about seating players, paying out jackpots, and taking care of any mistakes or issues that come up in the poker room. The wait and see attitude that I noticed with the dealers is a main reason for the lower rating. The Plaza Poker Room managers know the dealers are weak yet I was unaware of them attempting to help or even explain things to the dealers to improve their dealing. Comps Rating: 2 The Plaza Poker Room manager will give you a $5 food comp upon request to go with a tournament buy in. I believe they also give you the same comp for four or five hours of play in live cash games. High hands for quads or better can also be found. The jackpot awards for high hands start at $20 and have a $599 max on them. There is a separate jackpot rake taken for this. Also, there are no discount hotel rates for poker players. Overall, the new management at the Plaza Hotel and Casino has really cut back on amenities and comps throughout the entire casino.
