Editor's Review - Golden Nugget Poker Room Total Rating: 3.25 Room Quality Rating: 4 The New Golden Nugget Poker Room is one of the most beautiful rooms in Las Vegas. This is the third incarnation of the Poker Room at the Nugget in the past two years. The casino is undergoing major renovations under the new ownership of Landry’s restaurant chain and the poker room is by far and away the best of the renovations to date. The Golden Nugget Poker Room has been relocated to the right side of the main cage cashier. The location is near perfection as there is quite a bit of walk-by traffic going to and from the cage and table games. The Poker Room is also a short walk from the parking garage entrance on the southwest side of the casino as the Golden Nugget is of average size for a Freemont Street casino. Upon approaching the Poker Room at the Golden Nugget you may feel like the poker room is a bit on the dark side. Don’t be fooled. The Golden Nugget is one of the brightest casinos in Las Vegas with lots of gold color and mirrored glass throughout the casino. The Poker Room provides soft yellow ambient lighting on the walls with individual hanging lamps above each table. Seven widescreen plasma TV’s are hung on the walls surrounding the Golden Nugget Poker Room. Dark brown wood with tan trim engulfs the room and provides an extremely classy, yet laid back type of feel. The carpeting is an oriental design that you would find in some of the high roller lounges on the Las Vegas Strip and just adds to the overall look and feel to the room. The Golden Nugget has brought in all new 10-handed Texas Holdem tables. The tables are dressed in a beautiful light golden colored felt, a tan leather rail with cup holders, and commitment lines. The table designs fit perfectly with the Golden Nugget Poker Room design. The chairs are light brown in color, very comfortable, have wheels, and a curved back that provide the utmost in support for the poker player spending several hours in the Golden Nugget’s Poker Room. The only negatives aspects of the Golden Nuggets Poker Room are minor. The manager’s podium is tucked in a corner to the left of the Poker Room entrance and is not immediately visible to guests walking in. Second, there are two pillars placed right in the main walkway between the first two tables and the tables in the second row. This makes for some tricky maneuvering. Lastly, the Golden Nugget Poker Room can be very cramped when at or near capacity as there is only a small amount of room between the tables and the walls surrounding the Poker Room. Overall, the brand new Poker Room at The Golden Nugget Casino is one of the most beautiful and classy low roller poker rooms in Las Vegas. Players won’t find the high limits games here, but this is a great place for some low limit action and action it is! Competition Rating: 4 The Golden Nugget Poker Room may be one of the nicest poker rooms in Las Vegas but this does not mean the competition is going to be among the toughest. It’s quite the opposite actually. Lots of tourists just out to have a good time can be found lounging in here and playing some poker in their free time while on vacation. The locals that play here are just that, locals that play here. Most are here for socialization and relaxation. The players at the Golden Nugget Poker Room are of all ages and playing styles, but the majority of them are the loose and passive type of players. A few sharks can be found in the no limit Holdem games as there is no cap on the buy-in. The stacks can get quite deep and the game can be quite profitable for a patient, tight, aggressive player. Dealer Rating: 3 The Golden Nugget Poker Room has been more of a starter room for lots of dealers in Las Vegas looking to get experience and move to some of the bigger strip casinos. The Poker dealers at the Golden Nugget were of average quality and dealing skills. On my most recent trip to the ‘Nugget, I had a few questions that I was looking for answers to. Most of the dealers were very short with their answers without much explanation involved. They just seemed to be there, not really excited or anything, and acted like they were on cruise control while dealing. There were some mistakes, but nothing that couldn’t be rectified immediately Cocktail Rating: 2 The cocktail service in the Poker Room at the Golden Nugget leaves a lot to be desired. First off, the service was extremely slow. On my most recent trip to the Nugget Poker Room, I saw the waitress three times in two hours of playing, yet there were only five tables in play at the time. The server didn’t seem like she wanted to be there at all and when I did see her she came to the table, said “drinks” and walked away. When players ordered, the server seemed a bit annoyed that she couldn’t get away from the table in time. I never once heard a thank you for the tips she was receiving either. The other major downside to the cocktail service is that the Golden Nugget only provides bottom shelf or house liquor and your average run of the mill bottled bear to poker players. Sorry guys, Red Bull is not available in the Poke Room at this time. Management Rating: 4 The Poker Room Managers at the Golden Nugget seemed to know what they were doing. The decisions with dealer mistakes were handled efficiently and effectively. They were able to answer any questions I had regarding the poker room and their rules. Upon entering the room I was greeted with a smile and offered a seat in the game of my choice. The manager offered up some advice on the game selection in the room at that time which was quite appreciated. I bought it and then was directed towards the table with the limits that I wished to play. The Golden Nugget Poker Room managers use a paper list system as well as a paper tournament signup but they seem quite effective as this is a rather small poker room. Comps Rating: 1 The Golden Nugget Poker Room doesn’t offer much in the way of comps. In actuality, the only thing offered are the high hand jackpots for 4-of a kind or better, but there is a separate rake taken for these jackpots, so it’s not really a comp, just a promotion offered to the players. No hourly dollar amount comps or discounted hotel rates for poker players are available. An inquiry with the poker room manager about a comp to any of the eating establishments will result in an “I’m sorry”. The poker room manager did inform me that a comp system should be in place by the end of the year. I suspect that the construction at the Golden Nugget is the main factor as to why the casino and poker room are very tight on comps at this point in time. Golden Nugget Poker Room News The Grand Poker Series at the Golden Nugget Poker Room Date: 04/23/08 Summary:The Grand Poker Series at the Golden Nugget The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas has announced a tournament series of their own for Summer 2008. The series starts June 6th and runs through July 6th with buy ins ranging from $225 to $1080. Games included are No limit Holdem, Pot Limit Omaha 8, HORSE, Pot Limit Omaha High, and limit Omaha 8.
