Editor's Review - Circus Circus Poker Room
Total Rating: 2.50
Room Quality Rating: 2
**Last Updated: 10/30/08**
The Circus Circus poker room is one of the oldest continuously operating poker rooms in the City of Las Vegas. The poker room opened sometime around 1974, and has been going strong ever since. The room itself shows it age quite readily, as the tables are all heavily worn, as are the chips, and general poker room furnishings. There are no auto shufflers, and the room has a decent amount of Stud tables (indicative of an older poker room). In general, the room has a distinctive “musty” appeal, which goes along well with the hotel casino itself.
Aesthetically, the poker room at the Circus is quite old school. It is an actual room that provides little in the way of frills and amenities. Though there is counter where coffee, water, and refreshments were served at one time, those offerings were discontinued long ago. The chairs are very standard old bingo hall style chairs, and the arms rests on the tables are worn down significantly, as are the felts.
The tables are not cut for a jackpot drop, yet they take a jackpot. The dealers accumulate the jackpot drop dollars in a cup holder kept at the side of the table, and drop that money into a lockbox at the manager’s podium at the end of their time at the table. Their tips, however, are dropped into a box. This is a very odd setup and really shows how little the casino cares for its poker room or its players.
Competition Rating: 3
The Circus Circus pulled in several customers from Stardust when it was imploded, thus making the standard game at the Circus a retiree game, playing every day, just as a recreational hobby to pass the time. The games are generally weak tight, and the action is slow at best. The majority of the players here are playing to qualify for the weekly free roll, which makes the games tight and boring most of the time. The pots are small, and the action is slim. Though I have heard that they get a decent NL game going on the weekends, every time I have been there it was 3/6 Limit HE with a single $3 blind.
The players are generally not a very happy bunch. Though the casino caters to low budget families, the Dads that make their way to this poker room are often tired, bored, and unwilling to really gamble a whole lot at the table. The competition at the Circus is akin to almost any other older locals based poker room, and reminds this reviewer strongly of Texas Station. The players are generally all older limit players that play every day and think they are the best in the world. The game is annoying at best.
Dealer Rating: 3
The dealers at the Circus Circus poker room were all quick and relatively efficient, but lacking in any welcoming or vibrant personalities. They seemed a little burnt out, and not very interested in anything other than dealing and going on break.
Overall, the dealing staff at the Circus deal the cards, and maintain game control, which is all you can really expect a dealer working at the Circus to do.
Cocktail Rating: 2
The cocktail waitresses are all pretty burnt out and seemed both tired and annoyed to be serving the poker room. The drink selection is one of the most limited that this reviewer has come across. No energy drinks of any kind, no frozen drinks, no mid shelf liquor, and all sodas are served in plastic cups. The service speed was sufficient, though a tad on the slow side, as expected.
Management Rating: 3
The management of the Circus Circus poker room fits the bill quite well, and is really lacking any modern frills that many modern players have come to expect. Then again, no one playing in the Circus should really expect any real frills, either.
The list is maintained by paper and pen, and the decisions rendered by the staff seem to be fair and keeping with the spirit of the game. The staff seems to be knowledgeable about the game and the protection of both the game integrity and the players themselves. Overall, the room management is what you would expect from the Circus, not phenomenal, but not bad either.
The management staff does seem to lack the hands on approach when it comes to monitoring the clientele, as small children walking into the poker room seems to be a fairly common problem, and the staff doesn't seem to stop it as often as they should.
Comps Rating: 3
The Circus Circus poker room offers a high hand of the day promotion where the highest ranking hand of the day wins a preset amount of jackpot money. The room also offers a weekly free roll which can be played after achieving 15 hours of live play in the room. The standard high hand jackpots have been discontinued as of this writing to focus on the high hand of the day promotion instead.
The Circus does not offer any hourly comps on the player’s card, but they do offer a food voucher after playing 4 hours (basically a $4 discount coupon).
The Circus also offers a poker room rate after playing for 5 hours in the poker room for each day. This rate is available through the reservation desk, and can be adjusted by the poker room staff.
