Smoking Allowed: No Poker Room Rate: No Editor's Review - Binion's Poker Room Total Rating: 3.80 Room Quality Rating: 5 The new Binions Poker room grand opened in late October 2008, and along with the Golden Nugget, truly redefines the Downtown Las Vegas poker landscape. Traditionally, Downtown Las Vegas includes casinos with little by way of frills or high end luxury (save for the Nugget). Binions poker room, though the most historic poker room in Las Vegas, was no exception. For many years since the cash game room opened in 1988, the poker room was simply some tables, a half wall, some rails, the Gallery of Champions, and a podium. This all changed when the new relocated and remodeled room opened. The new room is best described as a “mini Venetian”. The chairs and the tables are nearly identical to the Venetian in both color palate and overall design. The new room, located in what was once the sunken sports book, is the only room capable of truly giving the Golden Nugget a run for its money as far as competition for the Downtown Las Vegas poker business. All tables are equipped with autoshufflers, and there are side tables available for tableside foodservice. Aesthetically, the Binions poker room is simply top notch. Well adorned walls, widescreen televisions, dark wood veneers and beige felts compliment the burl wood side tables and mahogany accents. The brass fixtures and tufted leather chairs in the marble foyer waiting area add an aura of old fashioned grace which is fitting for such a historical property. In lieu of modern pop art often found on the walls of remodeled poker venues, the walls here are adorned with classic black and white photographs showcasing various points of poker history. Some of these photos include notables such as Gabe Kaplan from the late 1970s, Stu Ungar from one of his 3 Main Event championship wins, Jack Treetop Strauss at the final table, and of course Doyle Brunson at various points of his poker career. In the foyer entrance, flanking the management podium, are two walls that need no introduction: The Gallery of Champions and the Poker Hall of Fame. The room quality of this poker room, overall, is extraordinarily high. In fact, the room quality here trumps most Strip rooms, let alone Downtown Las Vegas. The money invested in truly revitalizing the poker venue at Binions is quite substantial, and it shows. All tables are new and offer cup holders, thick leather armrests, adjustable height swivel chairs, and side tables. Aside from the new poker room, Binions has elected to retain the original cash game and tournament area to use exclusively for tournaments. This adds an additional 30+ tables to the table count. The original tournament area is free of frills, autoshufflers, and aesthetic beauty, but it serves its purpose, and allows for high tournament numbers. Competition Rating: 2 The competition level at Binions is fairly strong. It is definitely not the softest game around, but the games are nothing if not dependable. Binions has a strong local base of players, and many tourist players that come in due to the historical factor of the 35 year history of WSOP hosting. Due to Binions choosing to host a freeroll that players earn their way into by playing for a specified number of hours in their poker room, the games are often filled with "hours chasers", which are basically local nits and weak tight players looking forward to getting something for nothing. Though boring to play with these players can often be easily exploitable. The locals that frequently play at Binions are often the grinder types, older, tighter, hours chasers that are similar to the types of players found at places like Stations casinos or Monte Carlo (a very locals based Strip room). The NLHE games that are spread daily at Binions cater to the more experienced players, due to their uncapped buy ins, which is mirrored by the Golden Nugget located directly next door (across Fremont Street). Also available are 2/4 and 3/6LHE, and Omaha 8, all spread daily. The Limit games are often filled with new players as well as daily players. Overall, the competition level at Binions is what one would expect. Though often the grinder types, these players are often very predictable and fairly easy to read due to their overly repetitive betting patterns. Though not a selling point of the room, the competition is most assuredly beatable by any above average player. Dealer Rating: 3 The majority of the poker dealers at Binions’ have been around a long time and are quite set in their ways. Some of their mechanical skills and procedures are lacking in modern standards, and their attitudes seem to be leaning closer to burnt out and tired then to vibrant and welcoming. Autoshufflers have been added to all tables in the cash game room, which will alleviate some of the speed of dealing issues that a few dealers have. Though they are not the fastest or the friendliest dealing team, they get their job done satisfactorily, and the players appreciate it. Cocktail Rating: 2 The Binions poker room cocktail service, unfortunately, is one of the weakest links of the new poker room. The cocktail waitresses seem to try fairly hard, but also seem quite tired and sometimes outright annoyed by the patrons. Though the service bar is located only steps from the poker room, the speed of the staff seems to be fairly average to only slightly quicker than any other poker room. The staff is older, many having worked at Binions for a decade or more, and though the drinks served are correct and mistake free, the waitresses tend to be more than a little gruff and easily annoyed by the patrons and the new room setup. Of course, top shelf drinks and Red Bull are not available, but that would not be expected at a Downtown property. Overall, the cocktail service is the weakest link of the new Binions poker room. Management Rating: 4 The management of the Binions poker room has been good thus far, but still has room for improvement. At the time of this writing, Binions does not utilize the Genesis Bravo system that tracks open seats and electronically manages the lists. This causes a communication problem in the room, as the manager’s podium is located on the upper level of the poker room, several feet from the games themselves, causing a lack of organized communication between the poker room floor and the desk. Also, it seems that the floor staff that manages the podium is a bit overwhelmed by the new setup, and easily loses track of players and the needs of the room (i.e. fills, decisions, etc). A room of this aesthetic caliber needs to employ some electronic means of list tracking in order to match its high room value and to truly compete on the level that the room obviously strives to. The human element is why the room management raking is ranked as high as it is. Michael Shure, the new poker room manager, seems to be a very competent casino executive. He has a strong competitive desire to see the new poker room succeed, and he seems to truly have the passion needed to run a successful poker room. His enthusiasm is evident to anyone that talks with him, and his excitement over the new room comes off very naturally and sincerely. His lesser staff (specifically in the cash game room) do need some training when it comes to professional customer handling and overall room management, but with Shure at the helm, it seems that a well trained professional staff will be pruned over time. The tournament management staff, including Paul, is simply top notch and rivals Venetian as far as proper tournament management. Also worth mentioning is the management’s decision to permanently reduce the rake to $3 max (plus $1 jackpot). This shows a strong desire to build a long term customer base. Overall, the management of the Binions poker room is a selling point of the room, and once the list management system goes electronic and the players’ comps can be tracked at the table, the management ranking will easily earn 5 out of 5. Comps Rating: 4 Binions offers a few nice frills to poker players. Binions poker room is one of only 3 rooms in town that gives poker players $2 per hour comps on their players’ card, and the only one located in Downtown Las Vegas. Also, Binions offers a competitive poker Hotel room rate that can be achieved for only a few hours of play each day in the poker room. The only area of concern when it comes to comps is their decision to run a freeroll for players who earn a certain number of hours of play in their poker room. Freeroll chasers are not good for a room or the games, but more importantly, the jackpot money being dropped during every hand that reaches the pot minimum is going towards the freeroll only. Binions does not offer any high hand or bad beat jackpot payouts despite taking a dollar from every pot. The only players that will benefit from the jackpot drop, at this point, are those that qualify for the freeroll. This is an area of concern that needs to be addressed. Overall, the generous $2 per hour comps, competitive room rate, and freeroll paid for with jackpot funds earns Binions 4 out of 5 in comps. Once the jackpot money gets applied to more than just a freeroll tournament, the comp section will easily earn a strong 5 out of 5.
