Plaza Player Room Review
Vintage classic! Definately the BEST of the downtown scene.

Room Quality Description: The Plaza is a room that I honestly adore (save for the recent non-smoking rule). It is a very large section in the back of the casino, next to the theatre, the Craps tables (which can get loud at night), and the main cage. It is in the corner of the casino (literally), so it is two walls, and then a large open space on the side. This creates a comfortable atmosphere. The tables are well worn suited canvas (also seen at Flamingo), and the chairs are so-so, but the general vibe is wonderful. The staff is excellent, and the player is very welcome by everyone. It is an inviting space, that has its own Poker cashier, and has a nice vintage vibe. There are no autoshufflers (which is usually a dissapointment, however, here I hardly notice due to the very efficient dealers (more on that later), but the pace is good, and the overall room condition is fine. The only bad notes are the fact that they have some issues getting cash games started sometimes. They run single table tournaments all day every day (which are very popular), but the cash games tend to be a little slow when not in peak evening hours. I wish they had a consistent 3-6 game insead of a consistent 2-4 game. For people that fancy single table tournaments or multitable tourneys, this is definately the place to go. They have $25 winner take all single table shootouts, and $35 Sit and Goes where the top two get paid all day, every day. They spread 3-6 on most evenings and pretty much all day and night weekends, but weekdays is pretty much 2-4 only during the day, which is unfortunate.
Competition Rating: 3
Competition Description: I played 3-6 on three occasions and 2/4 on another. This is a tough one judge due to the style of play that most of these guys and hals have. It is not a very tough crowd, but it is not an Extremely easy crowd either. It is common to see multiway pots preflop, but most drop out pretty consistently on fourth street or earlier if there are bets or raises. Very little raising preflop, and many raises were respected, especially on fourth or fifth street. Paying attention is worth its weight in gold here, as many of these players are pretty easy to size up and get reads on if you observe carefully. On weekends, there is a decent tourist crowd, but during the week, it is mainly locals. I usually play weekends and occasionally weekdays, and have played at the Plaza 5 times, including yesterday. Winning sessions 4 out of 5 times. Can't complain there. Definately a beatable game, that requires a good tight agressive (and observation based) game. Definately an older crowd overall, with a few young internet wannabe hotshots sitting down on weekends (seek them out).
Dealer Rating: 5
Dealer Description: Without autshufflers, an excellent dealing staff is essential for a well run game. Thankfully, the Plaza comes through with flying colors. No misdeals that I recall in any of my playing sessions that were dealer error. Only one floor decision, which was the players fault, and good business oriented personalities. Brian is one that sticks out as being beyond excellent in both dealing skill and personality at the table. A good, no nonsense staff, they don't waste your time with fancy ways of turning the cards or pointless banter. They keep the game going quickly and efficiently, which I appreciate. In fact, in yesterdays session they got more hands out per hour then Harrahs did when I played there a few days ago, and Harrahs has autoshufflers! Reason being is that there are a few dealers at Harrahs that waste time with jokes, small talk, etc that slows down the game. At the Plaza, that is not an issue, and makes me a regular customer.
Cocktail Rating: 5
Cocktail Description: At last night's session (which was a Saturday evening peal time venture), there seemed that there was not a single time when a cocktail waitress (or two) were not in the room. Granted, they are older, and match the overall vintage feel of the Plaza and its usual clientele, but they are fast, efficient, and kept my tourist filled table nice and lit. Once again, something I greatly appreciate.
Management Rating: 5
Management Description: Usually a minimum of two managers on any given night, plus a poker specific cashier, which makes things very smooth running and efficient. The list is paper and pencil, and as soon as there are enough players they will open a new table or start another single table tournament. Management here is top notch, very friendly and welcoming. Always thanked when I leave, and welcomed when I return. Only witnessed one floor decision, and it was fair and resolved quickly. They keep constant track of open seats, and there is only a wait during off peak hours (when they have some trouble with getting cash games started). Overall, a superb management team that goes beyond the call of duty in making players feel welcome.
Comps Rating: 4
Comps Description: If I could, I would give comps a 3.5, as I am not a fan of a $1 out of the pot for the bonus hands, but I appreciate that the rake is only $3, so it balances out. They have signs all over that state that they give a $5 food comp for 4 hours of play, but when I asked for a comp. I received a $7 food comp! Apparantly, they need to update their signs, as a $7 comp is pretty generous. They have high hand bonus jackpots in addition to the food comp, and other various promotions. Players cards do not play here, which means that there is no per hour comp, but the $7 food comp is very generous from a downtown casino, and coupled with everything else, makes the Plaza easily the best place to play downtown, and in my opinion, the best place to play in Vegas.
