Hard Rock Player Room Review
Unique but not ground-breaking

Room Quality Description: The layout of Hard Rock's room is unlike any other that I've been to. The room is extremely spacious, has a bar near the entrance, and chairs all over the place with food and bottle service. Where I was sitting (a 1/2NL table, which was near the front of the room), there was an HDTV at eye level for each table. Each seat at the table has adjustable height and reclines. Everyone praised the Venetian when it opened for having plenty of space between tables and this goes way beyond that. Tables are 9-handed and all have autoshufflers. Possible downsides: it's a bit dark and if you play near the entrance can be loud because of the proximity to the main floor and the low ceilings. As a result, for being as spacious as it is, you almost feel like you're playing in a cave. Also, if you play 1/2 near the entrance, there will be smoke coming in from the bar/tables nearby. Finally, the room has a narrow entrance, which only lets prospective players see one table as they walk by; there's no rail. Overall, the room layout is the best in the city. The whole "poker lounge" concept, while interesting, is mostly bells and whistles and quality improvements, but otherwise doesn't really break new ground.
Competition Rating: 3
Competition Description: I came in for a 6:00 to 12:00 1/2NL session on a Friday after work. Early on, the table was a dream come true - there was a player who overbet the same amount no matter what the pot size was; a would-be table captain who would lose pot after pot in between trying to tell the dealer how to do his job; and possibly the most blatant calling station that I have seen in years. Later, the poor players left and the table became on of the tightest I've ever seen. I strongly suspect the original players were Hard Rock hotel guests; the latter were locals drawn to the room's opening weekend. This is somewhat discouraging because this room is too nice to become a local nit hangout. It is going to be interesting to see whether the poker room will be able to draw non-local visitors other than hotel guests, especially during the week. Competition on weekends is almost certainly going to vary greatly from competition during the week.
Dealer Rating: 5
Dealer Description: One misdeal in six hours, and no calls for the floor. Generally handled the game smoothly and professionally.
Cocktail Rating: 4
Cocktail Description: Service was generally good, although a bit slower than I expected given that there's a bar right by the room. Waitresses did not miss a drink order in the six hours I was there. I did overhear one player trying to place at least three or four different orders and being denied each time because they didn't serve what he wanted, but don't know what he was asking for.
Management Rating: 4
Management Description: Management generally seemed pretty competent. There are a number of familiar faces from around town. One strange thing is that the floor is dressed casual, which can cause you to overlook them if you're trying to find them.
Comps Rating: 4
Comps Description: I got $1 an hour but I believe it's $1.50 for 2/5NL and $2 for 5/10NL. There are high hand jackpots which draw a dollar from each pot. Jackpot amounts were not visibly listed anywhere from where I could see, and given that it was opening weekend the two high hands that hit when I was there were nothing to be excited about.
