Excalibur (Live) Player Room Review
Good for casual play, but not for everyone
01/08/08, Player: TuffGuy
Total Rating: 2.55
Room Quality Rating: 2
Room Quality Description: As of my last visit (July '07) this is not really a room. There is a section of the casino floor walled off with 3 foot walls, and surrounded by slots. The tables are starting to show their age, and the auto-shufflers jammed a couple of times per day. It is quite noisy from the slots. On the plus side, it's above average sized and not overly cramped (although not exactly spacious)
Competition Rating: 4
Competition Description: The majority of players here are inexerienced, with a few locals and competant out of towners thrown in for flavor. You wont find any real sharks here, as there just isn't enough money to be made to warrent their time (just don't tell the locals taking home $150 profit after 8 hours of play that they aren't sharks. Beware of growing over confident in your ability to run the table though, as the combination of low stakes and new players makes for more than a few calling stations, and they can be immune to bluffs. *This is not a place to get rich or play ultra aggressive poker. The stakes are low, and well timed bluffs are lost on many of the players. Players looking to take down big pots and outplay others will likely be frustrated. Players looking to grind out a few bucks while having fun and avoiding the pressure of higher stakes games should be able to accomplish that*
Dealer Rating: 2
Dealer Description: There are some stars on the dealing staff (sorry, I'm horrible with names or I would list them), but most are either average or sub-par. I've witnessed dealers curse at players for under tipping, push huge pots in the wrong direction after being told where it should go, call the clock on players making all in decisions after less than 2 minutes of thought against the other players wishes, and just act down right rude. Evening dealers seem to be significantly better in my opinion. Many of the day shift took turns baby sitting Doyle and Slim and don't really seem to give a rip if you are having a good time, or if the rules are followed.
Cocktail Rating: 3
Cocktail Description: Waitresses are not attractive with only a few exceptions. However, they are some of the more friendly and service oriented than I have seen. They understand that players in their room are not high rollers, and do not scoff at a 1 or 2 dollar tip. I've had very fast service and slow service at different times, but typically I don't spend too much time looking for my order. As a beer or bottled water drinker I can not comment on the quality of the drink served (kind of hard to mess up a bottle of Bud).
Management Rating: 2
Management Description: I have witnessed several glaring inconsistancies with the floor staff that can not be ignored. During a single 14 play session I witnessed 3 different rulings involving the calling of the clock. In one situation a player asked for a clock to be called on another player and the dealer refused. The floor person ruled that only the dealer could call the clock. In another instance where the dealer called the clock on a player and the other players did not want him to (he had a large stack, and others wanted him to have time to talk himself into calling) the floor ruled that if other players in the hand did not want the clock there would be none. On a third a player called the clock on another player, and his hand was ordered dead after 30 seconds. The floor and dealer argued over whether the clock was 30 or 60 seconds. However, the poker room manager and assistant manager do value their customers. During my last visit there was a problem with the hotel staff and the rate we were given. When we involved the poker room manager she personally handled the situation with the hotel and casino host to give us the rate we wanted. If not for her, this score would be a 1.
Comps Rating: 3
Comps Description: Ability to play for a (usually) reduced rate is a bonus. I miss the buffet though, that was nice. *Note* do your homework before planning to get a great deal. The room rates listed in the primary review are no longer valid. Since ownership of the casino changed, you are now playing for a "player's rate" which is actually sometimes higher than the regular rate (hence the problem listed above)
