South Point Player Room Review
Five days of 1-2 NLHE
07/30/07, Player: ACG2x
Total Rating: 3.50
Room Quality Rating: 3
Room Quality Description: OK so I actually played at South Point over New Year's 2007 however when I logged on to AVP after returning home, I found the room wasn't listed yet. Now that it is, here goes.
The room itself isn't really a "room" at all, just an open area in the back corner of the casino next to the stairwell to go up to the hotel's movie theater. There is a small retaining wall around the poker area, but it's all open. You can easily hear pretty much anything going on in the casino outside.
The room itself is pretty standard with plasma TV's, newer felt and is for the most part clean. There aren't many tables in the room, but that would be I assume because it had recently opened and they didn't have a lot of customers.
The decor is standard and it has what the rest of the casino has. Very bright colors, lots of orange and purple. Room is entirely non-smoking. It did feel odd at times because you were so out in the open and the ceiling's are pretty high up.
All in all a nice place to go play. Be aware though that the 1-2 NL games usually don't get started until mid-late afternoon. If you try to play in the morning you'll usually either get in on a table that was running all night and the game is about to break or will have to wait. Sometimes they didn't get a 1-2 game going until 3-4 PM. If they are running a morning tournament, a 1-2 game usually starts sooner.
Competition Rating: 5
Competition Description: Wow...just wow. I had four of the best 1-2 NL sessions in my entire life at South Point. Many of the players were just awful. I finished up nearly $1,500 at 1-2 NL alone over the course of five days. If you play TAG poker, you will beat the 1-2 game here.
I actually had one guy who gave me nearly $500 by himself in two hands, one of which is where he reraised me all-in on the river on a board of A-J-Q-4-4 with a flush draw out there when he had A-K and no flush draw. I had Q-Q and busted him. One the second one I hit the nut flush on the turn on a board of an A plus rags and he moved in with A-9 (no two pair).
I could go on, but it's not necessary. Basically play a solid, TAG game and you can easily beat the players here.
Dealer Rating: 3
Dealer Description: Overall dealers were pretty good. The female dealers had more personality than the male ones. Dealers had a few minor screw-ups but nothing that was a detriment to the game.
One dealer I thought put up with a drunk player way too long when he was trying to give "advice" to the younger girl next to him while she was in the hand and he was not. Dealer told him at least 7x to not talk to her while she was contemplating an all-in shove from a player in an earlier position.
In his drunken stupor the player rambled on about how since he wasn't in the hand, it didn't matter, etc. The dealer eventually moved to call the floor, but I thought it held the game up too long while they bantered back and forth. Give the guy a warning, tell him to stop and if he doesn't, call the floor immediately. No need to let someone who is drunk carry on because they obviously aren't listening.
Overall, a good but not great job.
Cocktail Rating: 4
Cocktail Description: I have to give it up to SP here. We had constant cocktail service. Our waitress, who was Filipino or some kind of Polynesian descent was ridculously attractive and was extremely fast in keeping my Red Bull IV juiced. SP servces Red Bull in a can and the service is very fast.
Several of the waitresses (mostly day shift ones) were older, but were still lookers. The night staff was for the most part very attractive and friendly. I was impressed.
Management Rating: 4
Management Description: All questions were answered in an orderly fashion. The management staff was also very helpful in explaining the general rules for the $45+5 I played. The room rarely had a list for 1-2 NL so I can't really say how the player list was.
However, South Point did not have a computerized list for all to see who was waiting when I was there, or at least I don't remember it. They do allow you to call down from your room (hotel guests only) and put your name on the list ahead of time. I did that several times while I showered/got ready to play.
I have to use part of this space to give it up for Steve, a floor guy. He is middle-aged, silvery hair and glasses and was about the coolest floor guy I've ever been around. Very friendly and entertaining. Talked me up about hands and where he likes to play on the Strip after our game broke and/or I was waiting for a game to get together. Went out of his way to help me with a room rate and food comps. Steve, if you ever happen to read this, CG3 from Minnesota (kid who usually wore a Nike jacket and huge headphones) thinks you own.
Comps Rating: 3
Comps Description: The comp rate I got was $1.25 for the first few hours and (I believe) $0.50 per hour after for a max of $9.00 per day. It may have changed since January though. As I mentioned there is a room rate, but you have to ask for it and you have to give them a certain number of hours per day of action to qualify for it. Since I put in multiple 8-10 hour sessions, I had no problem doing this.
South Point had no bad beat jackpot when I played there, only high hand progressives. Any quads, straight flush or royal flush gets you a progressive jackpot that is pumped up periodically throughout the day.
