Sahara Player Room Review

Crappy room, but everything else was good
05/22/07, Player: HaysCode

Total Rating: 2.75

Room Quality Rating: 1
Room Quality Description: They’re supposedly going to remodel this place soon, and it needs it. The “room” is really just a small corner of the casino with a rail around it. The overhead fluorescent lighting is somewhat harsh and can wear out your eyes after a while. The tables and chairs are in decent condition but are kind of old and cheesy-looking. It has all the glitz and swankiness of your local bowling alley.

Competition Rating: 5
Competition Description: The only games going in the afternoon when I showed up were a pair of 2-4 limit games. They hold three cheap tournaments a day (which I didn’t play) and the place gets busy during those times. The tourneys seem to help the cash games, as a lot of tourney players play 2-4 while they’re waiting and after they get knocked out. As you can probably guess, it’s not exactly a hot spot for poker talent. The 2-4 game was very soft, consisting almost entirely of tourists, retirees and recreational gamblers. The game has only one blind (usually bad for action) but six or more players were limping in on almost every flop.

Dealer Rating: 4
Dealer Description: All the dealers were competent and friendly. At the risk of sounding slightly xenophobic, I have to say I appreciated the fact that they could all speak clear English. I don’t care what nationality my dealer is, but when he/she speaks in an impenetrably thick accent it can slow the game down and lead to misunderstandings. No such problems here. The game was a little slow because the tables had no auto-shufflers and half the players didn’t know what they were doing, but that wasn’t the dealer’s fault.

Cocktail Rating: 3
Cocktail Description: The waitress came around fairly often and was reasonably quick.

Management Rating: 3
Management Description: Everybody seemed nice enough. Nothing especially bad or good.

Comps Rating: 4
Comps Description: They have a food comp; I didn’t ask how much it pays per hour. They also apparently have a very cheap room rate for poker players (I didn’t stay there). The best thing about this room is the bad-beat jackpot. A lot of the casinos on the Strip don’t even have one. The Sahara’s jackpot is aces full beaten, using both cards in your hand. So, even aces full of deuces beaten by four deuces can win a jackpot. With requirements this low, the jackpot doesn’t get very big before someone hits it, but still it was up near $11,000 when I was there. The other nice effect of this is that many players who are hoping to hit a jackpot will play ace-rag under any conditions and hope to catch a miracle full house, which can be a very profitable situation for you.
