Stardust Player Room Review
Best Deal in Town for a Gem of a Place
03/19/06, Player: grimjack
Total Rating: 4.75
Room Quality Rating: 5
Room Quality Description: I took advantage of the poker room rate that I discovered at AVP.com. I made a last minute trip to Las Vegas and was able to call up and score the rate of $45 a night for the same night (Friday) and Saturday at a Villa Room. They could give me $100 a night for a tower room overlooking the strip. To get a same day room rate like this is great to me, and since it was my first stay there and they had no experience with me I rank this place as incredible. It shows they really take care of their players. The villa room I had was a King non smoking. The villas overlook the pool (inside) or overlook the parking lot (outside). My room overlooked the parking lot, but I wasn't there for the view. The room was standard upper quality room. Although not decorated in the Pottery Barn style of the newer strip hotels, it was clean and the bathroom had been revently renovated. I would say it resembled how a Sheraton, Westin or Hyatt used to look in 1995. The bed was comfortable. One comment is that the television was smaller (about 25 inch) but I wasn't there for the cable TV.
Competition Rating: 4
Competition Description: The Stardust used to be the Las Vegas home base of Wayne Newton. I knew this going in and knew the Stardust draws some big money players left over from those days. It did not disappoint. I played 1-2 NLHE ($40-$200bi). The players were a combination of loose passive and loose aggressive. Most of the loose passive players kept limped where they shouldn't. The loose aggressive guys made it $40 to go on about every pot they played, but played rags often. They put from $6-9K onto the table over 2 nights I was there each night. And it wasn't 1 or 2 players that were doing this, but many who were there to spend their money. While these people probably had experience at BJ or Craps, they certainly had very little at poker. I now know what its like when the pit bosses see guys peeling off the $100 bills and laying them on the table. When this happend repeatedly, you know its only a matter of time before you win big. If I lived closer, I wouldn't be telling anyone about this poker room, thats how good it is.
Dealer Rating: 5
Dealer Description: I saw no dealing mistakes the entire time I was there. This is very rare in my experience, so I have to give props to the dealers at the Stardust. There was one question among players, and the dealer promptly called the floor to settle the dispute. All in all, an exceptional table experience.
Cocktail Rating: 4
Cocktail Description: No Rolling Rock in bottles, so I can't give them an excellent rating, but cocktail service was more often than I would have expected. Service was much more frequent than the blackjack and craps tables of the larger strip casinos, and special order drinks as well as premium label drinks were no problem.
Management Rating: 5
Management Description: The late night manager while I was there was named 'Sarge' An old timer who ran a good room looks like he had been around a decent amount of time. Think Korean war or possibly a very young guy in WW2. There is no board. Its all done by pencil and paper, but all run fairly.
Comps Rating: 5
Comps Description: I don't think the comps get better than this place. The room rate of $45/night for a weekend night on the strip hasn't been heard of (by me) for anbout 10 years. Couple that with the fact that you only have to play 3 hours a day to get the rate and it blows everything else out of the water. Plus they give a $5 off food comp after 4 hours of play. With the specials they run in their coffee shop, plus the coupon out of the magazine in your room, means you can get steak and shrimp for under $7.00 which is better than most specials. Plus, if you play all day (like I did) they will give you multiple food comp coupons which you can stack and eat Steak and Lobster for free after a solid day of poker. (I like to play 12-18 hours in a day). FYI The coupons are good at any Stardust restaraunt, which includes Tony Romas.
