Those French sure are sneaky!
On Friday night, Paris Las Vegas opened its poker room at least two weeks ahead of schedule. And you know what? It’s a pretty cool little poker room, with some potential.
I spent a few hours there on Friday night and I was very impressed by the people working the new poker room. The management, dealers, and cocktail waitresses were all very good.
Although the physical environment of the poker room is nothing special (just two rows of poker tables in the middle of the casino floor), I am told that there will be some major improvements within the next few months. For example, a half-wall will be added around the perimeter of the poker area, creating more of a “room”, and there should be new flat screen televisions added.
Presently the Paris poker room is right next to a bar, so drinks come fast.
Frankly, the most impressive thing about the Paris poker room on opening night was the fishy competition. I played the $3/6 game (the biggest limit Holdem game being spread), and the players were terrible. Of course, I lost my buy-in, but that’s because I’ve been on a six week cold streak (a.k.a. very long tilt). It definitely wasn’t because the players were skilled.
I was losing monster pots in situations such as when my nut straight got rivered by a baby flush. I’m not mad. That’s poker. The point is there were a ridiculous number of fish that were chasing their runner-runner dreams to the river. They just happened to hit ‘em every time I was in the pot it seemed.
The difference between the clientele at the Hilton poker room vs. the clientele at the Paris poker room on Friday night was significant. It was opening night for both poker rooms. The Hilton’s new card room was populated by mostly older locals, and Paris was occupied by mostly younger tourists. What a difference location can make for a new poker room!
