My family is in the Restaurant business, so today I stopped by the 2005 Las Vegas Food and Beverage Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This is the largest annual food and beverage show in the United States, and it's awesome. The liquor is free flow'n and the food is constantly cook'n. All of it is free. Plus, the show attracts some of the most beautiful tradeshow models I have ever seen (and I go to quite a few conventions). The show is amazing enough by itself, but today I got a real treat! I got a chance to play poker with a professional poker icon.
Walking past the Knob Creek booth, I noticed there were quite a few poker tables set up, and there were about 20 players seated at the various tables. I thought, “wow, that's pretty cool”, so I walked over, grabbed a shot from one of the gorgeous Knob Creek models and inquired further. Well it turns out Knob Creek hired several poker professionals to sit down and play poker with visitors. At first I didn't recognize most of the pros, but then I saw someone that I instantly knew -- “The Professor” -- Howard Lederer, one of the most famous and well-respected poker players of all time was sitting right there, playing poker with the show attendees. I had to take my shot at the pro.
I waited about five minutes for a seat at Howard Lederer's table to open up, and while waiting I had my fair share of Knob Creek samples. I played about six hands with Howard, who was obviously tired, but still in good spirits. He hooked me up with an autographed photo that says “To [AllVegasPoker], Flop 'em Dead!” -- How awesome! I told him about the website, so hopefully he will visit.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to lay a bad beat on him before he had to go. Nevertheless, it was a fun experience, and I'm glad I am able to share it with you now. You can read more about Howard Lederer on the biography page at his website.
(Interesting note, Howard Lederer is Annie Duke's brother – Annie is another famous poker player that you may know – unfortunately, Annie wasn't at the show).
