When Wynn Las Vegas opens on April 28th, there is little doubt that it will be among the finest poker rooms in the world. Its founder, Steve Wynn, is already credited with the designs of the Mirage and Bellagio poker rooms, both of which are excellent.
Wynn will utilize some new technology in his room. According to Wynn Las Vegas President Marc Schorr, “Instead of making poker players sign up on a paper list or a chalkboard, Wynn's list will be computerized. Players can sign up and wait in their rooms or in the casino for a page telling them their seat is open.”
This isn't a totally new idea. I know of at least one other poker room in Las Vegas that uses a restaurant style paging system (Sam's Town). But, Wynn will be the first major casino resort to offer a paging system, and I think it's a terrific idea. For starters, it's great for the casino because instead of poker players waiting around by the poker room so they can hear their name, they will be more inclined to venture to other areas of the hotel (to spend money). Also, the paging system should ease the frustration associated with long wait-lists. If I can walk out to the Ferrari dealership (which Wynn will have in the hotel), then the 1+ hour wait lists won't be quite so bad.
As expected, the Wynn poker room will have a VIP section for high stakes poker players. But, what is unclear is exactly how many tables the poker room will offer. There have been published reports citing anywhere from 24 to 28 tables. So, expect the final number of tables to fall somewhere within this range.
Finally, there are no poker tournaments scheduled at Wynn during its first year. Nevertheless, the poker room has already stockpiled tournament poker chips just in case a tournament is eventually offered.
