10 Tips for Playing Poker in a Real Vegas Poker Room
Improving your poker etiquette and table manners.
Date: 09/13/04
Room: General News
Summary: Playing poker in a real brick and mortar card room is different than playing on-line poker in many ways. For those players making the transition to a live table game, here are some tips to keep in mind so you don't aggrivate others.
Content: Below are 10 tips for poker etiquette that all poker players should know. If you have never played in a live poker room the you may not be familiar with these tips. That's perfectly fine, but if you want any respect at the table, you should take the time to memorize these tips.
1. Don't splash the pot. When you want to call or raise, don't throw your chips on top of the chips already in the pot. This makes it difficult for the dealer (and the other players) to determine exactly how many chips you added to the pot. It really irritates dealers, and new players do it over and over again.
2. Don't act out of turn. When playing on-line, you don't have to think about this, but in the real world of live poker games it is very poor etiquette to act out of turn. This means wait for the action to get to you. Do not call, raise, or fold your hand until it's your turn. Nothing irritates other players faster.
3. Show one player, show all players. A lot of new live poker players don't know that if they show their hand to one person at the table, then EVERY person at the table has a right to see the cards. If you show your buddy, be prepared to show the entire table if somebody asks.
4. Say raise before you start to put your chips in.This is probably the most common mistake among new players because it's not necessary when playing on-line poker. In live games, before you make a raise you must SAY "RAISE!" -- If you don't say raise, then you need to make sure you put the amount of chips out that you want with ONE hand motion. If you do not say raise, and you put out say $3 to call a bet, but you actually want to raise it another three and you move your hand back to your stack to get more chips, then this is called a STRING BET, and it's not allowed. The way to make sure you don't make a string bet is to ALWAYS say raise. (it's just a good habit).
5. Don't fold your hand until you know you didn't win. It happens to everyone, but in live games there is no computer to double check -- You accidentally fold your hand, even though it was the winner. Last week my buddy won a hand with two pair even though the winning hand was a straight. Why? Because the fool with the straight folded his hand. He didn't even see he had the straight. Don't be the fool. Look at your cards and the board VERY closely before you muck them.
6. Protect your hand. In live poker the dealer will pick up cards that he doesn't believe are in play. If he picks your cards up, and you were still playing them, it's too late. The best way to make sure your cards are not picked up accidentally is to cover them with an extra poker chip on top.
7. Push your chips into the table (but not the pot). Dealer's have a pretty tough job, so don't make it any tougher by making them stretch all the way across the table to grab your chips. Push them into the table, without splashing the pot.
8. Don't muck your hand by accident. In a live poker game, the "muck" is the pile of cards that have been folded. If you have the winning hand, don't toss your cards into the muck by accident when you show them. If even the corner of one card hits the muck, your hand is dead; EVEN if your hand was the winner. When you have a winning hand, show the cards down right in front of you. Far away from the muck.
9. Don't talk about your hand to other players. This is a big no-no. Don't ever discuss your hand with another player.
10. Tip the dealer. In Vegas, it is customary to tip the dealer $1 on each pot. Sometimes if the pot is very small (less than $10) you can get away with only tipping $.50, but generally plan to always tip $1 per pot. The dealer's can't survive without the tips.
