Just two years ago, on 9/14/05, I was at the new Hilton poker room for opening night. I remember it well in part because comedian David Brenner was seated at my low limit table yuck'n it up with the riff-raff.
Evidently Hilton management decided the poker room was no laughing matter because tonight at approximately 5:00 PM the Hilton poker room is closing its doors permanently.
I mistakenly believed that the Hilton poker room's proximity to the Las Vegas convention center would attract enough players to keep the lights on. I guess I was wrong. Or maybe management decided the space could be used in a more profitable way. Linda, the poker room employee who fielded my telephone call this afternoon, couldn't provide me with any specific reason for the close, other than saying, "it was an upper management decision."

Goodnight Hilton poker room. You'll be moved to the AVP poker room archives soon.
