Summary: Executives at The Venetian recently invited All Vegas Poker back for a behind the scenes tour of the upcoming poker room. Simply put - the new poker room at The Venetian is a masterpiece. It is an outstanding work of artistry and craftsmanship, rivaling the best poker rooms of Las Vegas. It opens Sunday, April 2nd at 9:00 PM, and if you are a poker lover, this is a “can’t miss” event.

Content: Back in November, I visited The Venetian, where I met with several casino executives. At that meeting we discussed their preliminary plans for building a world class poker room. Yesterday, I was invited back for an early look at the (nearly) finished product. To say they did a fantastic job would be an understatement. I was blown away.

The new poker room at The Venetian is absolutely gorgeous. From floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall, the elegance for which The Venetian is known resonates within the poker room. Located adjacent to the sports book, the poker room is decorated in deep rich leathers and woods with dazzling chandeliers hanging overhead. But for me, the most impressive features are those that directly impact the players.

For example, The Venetian poker room offers generous spacing between the poker tables. When this poker room is full of people, I don’t think players will have any trouble moving around. I am particularly happy to report that the excellent table spacing applies to all tables, not just those dedicated to higher limit games.

There is a computerized list management system, and 21 high-definition plasma televisions hanging on the walls. There are comfortable poker chairs with thick cushioning, and auto-shufflers and drink holders at every poker table on the main floor.

Another nice feature is a plush seating area that all poker players can enjoy while taking a break, or waiting for a game. This feature is extremely rare in Las Vegas card rooms, and especially here since it is available for use by all players, even lower limit players. However, not every amenity at The Venetian poker room is available to all players. That is because The Venetian poker room was built with high-stakes action in mind.

To accommodate the high rollers, The Venetian built an exclusive poker salon for the big games. Additionally, The Venetian also built a private (non-gaming) poker-lounge where the high stakes players can relax. This is another innovative feature. I am not aware of any other Las Vegas card room that has a comparable lounge.

Of course, a luxurious facility is only half the formula for creating a killer poker room. A real first class poker room requires extraordinary management and staff to provide exceptional service to poker players. The captain of the ship in any poker room is the Director of Poker Operations.

After touring the poker facilities, I had lunch with Kathy Raymond, the recently hired Director of Poker Operations at The Venetian. Kathy is no stranger to high profile poker rooms – she formerly supervised operations of the enormous Foxwoods poker room in Connecticut.

Kathy is a smart and experienced poker room director. She understands the poker business, and she clearly has a plan for turning The Venetian poker room into the best poker room in Las Vegas. To test her plan, I hit her with some challenging questions during lunch, and Kathy did not even flinch.

I asked her how, in the competitive Las Vegas poker market, she will draw high-stakes poker players to The Venetian. I asked her how she plans to attract a strong local clientele. I asked her about comps, poker room rates, tournaments, and her management-style. She answered all of my questions with ease.

The essence of Kathy’s plan first involves providing extraordinary service to the uptown client-base that The Venetian already serves. Next, it’s just a matter of introducing new players to that level of service. Kathy knows The Venetian built a poker room that is arguably better than any other poker room in Las Vegas, and she expects the first-class amenities to attract some curious new players. When those curious players arrive, she just has to close the deal by taking care of her new guests.

The Venetian prides itself on its reputation for exceptional client service, and this isn’t just corporate mumbo-jumbo either. The Venetian has been recognized as one of the world’s most luxurious resort destinations, earning AAA Four-Diamond, and Mobil Four-Star awards in recent years. You don’t earn those credentials without remarkable service, and Kathy plans to ingrain this service oriented culture into her poker room staff.

Kathy is not naive either. She understands that while superior service is important, poker players care about the bottom-line. The Venetian will reward poker players with comps ranging from $1.00 to $1.50 per hour. And although a special poker player hotel room rate will not be available at opening, Kathy has not ruled out the possibility that one may be offered in the future. She knows that poker players like to stay where they play.

The Venetian poker room opens its doors Sunday, April 2nd at 9:00 PM. It’s going to be a real Grand Opening too. You will have a chance to watch a live celebrity poker tournament, and mingle with some of the biggest names in poker.

Scheduled tournament participants include: Doyle Brunson, Annie Duke, Johnny Chan, Shannon Elizabeth, Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari, Howard Lederer, Liz Lieu, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, Jeremy Piven, Chip Reese, Joe Reitman, and Jennifer Tilly.

If you’re in town Sunday night, then stop by to check out the card room. You won’t be disappointed. I’ll be there too, and if you say “hello” I may even have a custom All Vegas Poker chip for you. See you soon!

The complete poker tournament list for The Venetian poker room will be published soon. Check back for details.
